I got to help pack up the kitchen back in the day! So much fun! Rayna Green and Nanci Edwards were the leaders of the group that went up to get the kitchen packed out. ❤️🙏
Nice documentary, that kitchen was iconic, but for me, her most important contribution (besides two volumes of Mastering the Art of French Cooking) was not the later television programs with Jacques Pepin and Master Chefs that featured her real kitchen, but the nine seasons of The French Chef, none of which were videotaped in her Cambridge kitchen. They featured various TV kitchen sets, I guess what I'm saying is I'd be more awed seeing the original Boston Gas set in person, (complete with a washer and dryer), nevertheless, I'd love to visit the Smithsonian to see Julia's real kitchen which is ironically now a "set"!
I have been to the Smithsonian many times in the past. I no longer can go but this is one show I would have loved to see. I always wanted a Julia Childs kitchen.
I actually was a volunteer in college for a Christmas tour of several homes in Boston and I was the lucky one that got to stand in her kitchen. I was in the restaurant business most of my life and I could hardly believe I was there. Several years later I encountered Julia coming out of the nursing home after visiting her husband. She raised her arm up and gave us one of her famous hellos while passing us on the stairs. I looked at my sister and told her it was Julia!
Wonderful stories from the inside. I used to work in the objects conservation lab there and remember so many of our National treasures coming through the doors. It was indeed a special experience. We are all indebted to these talented and diligent folks for their time and forethought. All my thanks.
Excellent video! The fact that they were interviewing Julia on 9/11 is mindblowing. Every American who enjoys food and the art of cooking owes a debt of gratitude to the iconic, trailblazing Julia Child for delivering us from frozen dinners, Wonder Bread, and box cakes. She transformed our culinary landscape and her kitchen is a cultural touchstone worthy of preservation.
