I have actually been to the atlas mountains and studied the ecology and subsistance agriculture there, and was quite impressed by the terraces and cherry trees mixed into their traditional garden plots fed with water from irrigation ditches that were thousands of years old. I did notice that there were tree plantations on the upper mountain areas, mostly pine forests without a lot of diversity, but of course having anything is better than nothing, and these were planted 30-40 years ago obviously. But one obvious thing stuck with me, if you wanted to regreen the landscape and grow trees, then you just need to fence off an area and let nature do its work. Anyplace the goats or sheep could not get to had trees, even on extremely challenging slopes and such. If you taught the local people about rotational grazing of livestock, even fencing off areas of the mountain for a few years to allow grasses and forages to come back, the land would heal itself and save a hell of a lot of work raising seedlings and planting out seedlings that would naturally come back on their own if the land was just allowed to rest. If you wanted it to be a better foraging area you could of course just fence it off for a year and let the grasses come in, and practice rotational grazing, and soon it would look like the traditional grazing that is practiced in the swiss alps for instance. As a farmer that sees trees come up on their own in every fence row, hedge row, out of the way and places that are fenced off from my animals, I just always see all this massive amount of labor to raise trees to try to reforest these massive areas and think it must be easier to just let nature take over to some degree. Throw out a bunch of tree seeds and other grass seeds if you want to speed it up a bit. Raise some trees too of course but you will never be able to replant a mountain in a tree nursery run by students, but given time nature could do it for you. The seedlings are there just waiting to get a break from the constant annihilation from sheep and goats.

@@tuckerlundquist8311 you could look for grassroot organizations in your country. Here in the Netherlands there is at least one organization where you can sign yourself up to help planting trees just one for day (or more if you like) as a volunteer 😁

Ecosia does amazing work. I was wondering if permaculture techniques such as swales on contours & rock dams are included as additional measures to reduce erosion and to help raise the H20 table? The sight of the bare Moroccan mountainsides made me ask.

Thanks for that, nice and relaxed vid, btw I don’t know if you can help, but the ‘Trees planted’ counter near the search box froze at around 46 million. So after emailing Ecosia and getting no reply I decided to delete and re download the app, but now it’s frozen on 26 million!. You should know this incase others are having this problem.

Why is ecosia not recognizing the fact that livestock or grazing animals with the right behavior is necessary for regenerating large areas/regions/countries? Livestock is or has been a mayor part of our culture all over the world, and now that we understand their role and how we manage them properly, we can utilize their services, or ecosystem services.

how come 3 people don't like this video? are they allergic to oxygen?
@mathematics5573
@mathematics5573 6 лет назад
I dislike it becasue as I have tried to explain to ecosia already, Morocco is too far North of the equator. It is the tropical rainforests that lie on the equator, or very close to it that are critical for controlling the worlds climate. Morocco, like Europe , is too far North. I think they are making a mistake. They need to focus all the tree planting on the equator, as as close as possible to it, if we are to slow climate change. Franics, Biochemist, Ecologist.
@mathematics5573
@mathematics5573 6 лет назад
I put this on an ecosia utube video a while ago, in response to someone asking a similar question. Ecosia agreed with it. "The reason tropical rainforests are fundamental for controlling global climate is 1) because they store huge quantities of CO2; 2) the release huge quantities of O2, which cool the global climate and keeps it calm; 3) the are called rainforests not just becasue clouds drift over from elsewhere, and dumping huge quantities of rain on them, but because with the huge rivers flowing through them, a huge amount of water is being sucked up by the trees, and so a huge amount of evaporation occurs continuously from the leaves of the tress. This all happens because over the equator, where the Amazon, Congo and Borneo lie, you get 12 of light every day of the year, and it is very hot. Because there is so much evaloration of water from the leave of trees, the forests create their own cloud cover. These clouds do two things: 1) they drop rain down regularly, even multiple times a day ( hence the name "rainforsts"), but crutially, these clouds the forests create, form large white blankets over the forests canopy. These white blankets reflect heat back into space, and this has a very powerful cooling effect on the whole planet. But because humans have destoryed a lot of tropical rainforest, this cloud formation process has been reduced and lost, so our planet is heating up. So if we can plant 100's of billion of tropical rainforest trees back, and reduce CO2 emmisions, as they grow, all these process I have described, and especially the formation of cloud by the forests, will cool our plant faster. And because there is day light 12 hours a day in the tropics and it is very hot, compared to Northern Hemisphere countries, Canada, etc, trees grow much faster than in colder countires, and they grow all year round. So all these process I have described, operate all year round and suck CO2 up fatser and probably release O2 faster. In cold countries, evaporation and growth stops in Winter, even from Pine trees, and many trees loose their leaves, so all evaporation and growth stops. Can I have a kitkat now and some tea."

Francis Hooton this makes a lot of sense I appreciate you taking your time to explain. Maybe this could get Ecosia to move closer to the amazon. I am aware of the deforestation that is happening over there and believe that this could be a first step to do something great for the amazon and our environment

I would like to see Ecosia moving their Moroccan and Spanish tree planting projects, to the equator. Maybe start another up in Borneo. Borneo sits right ontop of the equator and 60 years ago it was entirely covered in jungle.

The desert was once forested. Over time the trees were cut down. Ecosia is helping the people to reforest what has been lost.

They have planted trees around parts of the Sahara where conditions are right, and this stops the desert expanding and over-running fertile land. They create a corridor of trees and it seems to work. A lot of land in Northern Africa was once forest.
