Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music crafted his own distinctive singing style- developing a beautiful voice that matches his sophisticated flair- elegant, charming, and gallant. He has quietly become one of the most influential artists of the Rock Era- deeply affecting many notable performers, including Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Morrissey and David Bowie- particularly his Serious Moonlight phase. If David Bowie is the ’thin white duke’, then, at 6 foot one inch, Bryan Ferry is the ’tall suave chevalier. We cover his top 5 songs, that we call a fiver, songs like Love is the Drug, More Than This, and Slave to Love.

#5- From 1980, “Over You” the lead single off the Roxy Music album Flesh + Blood (Flesh and Blood).
Co-written by Bryan & guitarist Phil Manzanera- “Over You” was a #5 hit in the UK.
Bryan performs “Over You” with the pining of a desperate lover.
#4- “Sensation” - from the 1985 solo Bryan Ferry release Boys and Girls, which is a SUPERB album. I like to call the Boys and Girls album Bryan Ferry’s 'solo Avalon', because it has so many amazing cuts.
#3- “Love Is the Drug”
It was the only Roxy Music song to break the Top 40 in American- reaching #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975
The song was much bigger in the UK- rising all the way to #2, and #3 in Canada.
#2- From 1985 “Slave to Love”
The first single from the Boys & Girls record.
It was a #10 hit in the UK
#1- “More Than This” the melancholy masterpiece from the vaunted Roxy Music album Avalon- released in 1982.
Bryan Ferry just simply nails this song with a powerful tone of despondency in his vocal performance that resonates with anyone that has felt the agony of a broken love affair. It’s a vicious punch to the stomach that can hurt far worse than any other physical affliction.
Bryan Ferry has been asked many times why he thinks “More Than This” has endured, and his answer is fundamental. He believes that the gloomy dreariness of the constant clouds and rain that he experienced while writing the song in Western Ireland put him in a perfect state of mind to come up with such a wonderfully dark composition.
“More Than This” ascended to #6 in Australia and the UK
In America, it attracted a cult New Wave following, but failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100.
It is difficult to mention my appreciation for Bryan Ferry’s vocal performance on “More Than This” without gushing over the depth of the entire Avalon album on which “More Than This” is the first cut.
The title track, for instance, is an incredible song, as is “The Space Between” and “the Main Thing”, but all 10 songs on the album are outstanding. Even the instrumental “Tara” is beautiful, showcasing Andy MacKay’s stellar talent as a saxophonist, and Bryan Ferry is extraordinary throughout.

I met Bryan Ferry in 2011 in Birmingham UK, when he did an album signing session. He was charming, impossibly suave and a true gent. Usually famous people look like the rest of us in real life, Ferry had an aura about him. He carefully signed the Olympia album (a terrific LP by the way) and held it open for a moment to let the ink dry, gently slide it back into the slip case and shook my hand. Great experience.

A beautiful tribute to Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music. More Than This will always hold a special place in my heart, it stopped me from committing suicide at the age of 14. Granted it was the 10,000 Maniacs cover that saved me, but the lyrics were just so poetic, that it made me realized that I still had a lot more to live for and there is more songs for me to discover and explore. I finally heard the Roxy Music version a couple of years later while playing bass at a recording session for this man and wife group, and they gave me their cassette copy of the Street Life compilation. I've since bought all of Bryan's and Roxy's albums on vinyl and cd, and he truly influenced me a lot in my songwriting and compositions.

I began researching his earlier stuff. I was blown away with some of the earlier Roxy Music music. Here in the USA; we never got to hear any of the early stuff; at least I hadn't. If There Is Something, Out of the Blue and Mother of Pearl are a few of my favorites now. I will say that some of their music will start out not particularly great and then there will be a switch into something marvelous and spell binding. I think Roxy Music's cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy is right up there with More Than This. For his solo work, Is Your Love Strong Enough. His vocals are so haunting.

I saw him at the Greek theater a couple of years back. Not only was it one of the best sounding concerts I’ve ever been to, the combination of various colognes and perfumes, it was one of the best smelling audiences I’ve ever sat with. Amazing show.

"Tall, suave chevalier." I'm grinning like a bloody idiot at that, Adam. This was wonderful. Thank you. List is pretty flawless as well, ALTHOUGH (there's always an "although" from the armchair section) I'd swap out "Sensation" with "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" from the Legend soundtrack. It's Bryan Ferry with the same secret weapon: David Gilmour. Quoth the Bueller: Che bella.

I truly think what makes this song so special and transcends time is how eerily haunting and atmospheric it is. Truly masterful! On a sidenote the late great John Wetton of Asia same played with Roxy music during one or two of their tours of Europe in the mid 70s.

The first Roxy Music album is the craziest (in an arty, good way). My favorite Roxy albums are Stranded and Country Life, and my favorite Roxy songs are "Mother of Pearl" and "Oh Yeah." However, I love all the other usual suspects (like "More Than This") too.

Favorite concert ever: Roxy on the Avalon tour in '83. They opened with "The Main Thing". The curtain dropped at the perfect moment maybe 20 seconds in, crowd went nuts and I knew it was going to be amazing. Phenomenal album. Great choices for the 5 songs (thanks for including "Over You") and the honorable mention though I wouldn't have included Sensation, as good as it is. So many great songs to choose from going back to RM's debut. There was an attempt at a reunion album in the early 2000s that fell apart. His first two post Roxy solo albums are his best but there are some great moments on later records ("Goddess of Love", "I Thought" written with Brian Eno, and a cover of "Song to the Siren"). For people who love Avalon, the prior album "Flesh and Blood" (with "Over You") is worth checking out. You can see the band heading towards that lush Avalon sound.

You can't choose wrong with Roxy/Ferry but your choices are mostly culled from the smooth, lush, romantic pop period, leaving out the early brilliant art rock and barely touching on the mid-period proto-new wave. The Roxy/Ferry story can't be told without Remake/Remodel, Mother of Pearl, Do The Strand, Editions of You, Virginia Plain, Casanova, Street Life, Same Old Scene, and In Every Dream Home a Heartache. By itself, Ferry's voice is a grand instrument but mixed with Eno's out-there treatments, Manzanera's art-flamenco leads, a world class rock rhythm section, singular style and album covers - Roxy might be modern music's greatest gift.
@ronggearrob9622
@ronggearrob9622 3 года назад
Agreed and well stated. For those that may turned off by the later smother and "pop" sounding Roxy Music, I would encourage you to listen to the first 4 albums. They are much more experimental with a harder rocking sound. As great as the Avalon album is, I find myself listening to one of these earlier albums more frequently.

Roxy Music have been a favourite band of mine since the late 70's. Their music is incredible but also the production. If you listen to their music on headphones you hear so much going on. They always put so much into the production. Not surprising when you have Eno involved I guess. Also Ferry's solo stuff was incredible, Taxi and Bête Noire in particular were fantastic albums and I still listen to those now. Whatever Ferry has done he has always associated himself with top-notch musicians and producers. I remember seeing them at a gig and one thing I'll always remember, the track Avalon and Yanick Étienne's incredible vocal. Never heard a better female voice! Thanks for this episode, Professor.....Roxy Music truly are one of the great bands!
