@@kickerpunter My great grandfather had a rule of life... Never gamble, do not run around chasing skirts, do not smoke ans stay away from hard alcohol, and it will all turn out in the end. I think he just meant stay away from addiction but never forget to enjoy in moderations.

Great song, and will be so for centuries to come for any society that is fighting against conformity. God bless Dee Snider and others who wrote the great songs. I was so very happy to hear Dee sung in a church and he's a believer, a man of God, just on the more radical side, the side of freedom.

We're not gonna take it... response to dad's what are you gonna do with your life, from Dee Snider's youth. He sang in a church choir until he was 19. It is connected to 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful'. Song was popularised in the two weeks prior to the release of the music video. Dee Snider wrote the music video for the song as well as the song itself. Hook for the song was written in 1980. Remainder was written in 1983 in time for the release of the album, 'Stay Hungry' (1984).

I have always considered _Stay Hungry_ to be a Christian Rock album. The lyrics were so uplifting and insightful and can be interpreted in that way, a wall of sound against the forces of evil.

Love the song. Love the album. But Dee says without the We're Not Gonna Take It video, there would not have been a "Thriller". Um....sorry Dee, the Thriller album came out 2 years before Stay Hungry, and its iconic video came out a year and a half before yours. ;) Love ya...but gotta correct you on that one. :)

Good point. However, the Thriller video was released only 5 months before Dee's video, not 18. (December 2, 1983 vs around May 10, 1984)

Yep, it was 5 months before. I was just gonna type the same thing. Good catch. Dee's re-writing history again lol. However, he may have gotten confused with the opening sequence of Jackson's "Black or White" video which was a direct rip-off of "We're Not Gonna Take It".

Beyond that, he called this 'the first video with a story'. Sorry- Adam & The Ants had that with "Stand And Deliver" in 1981... and if you listen to the solo of "We're Not Gonna Take It" and listen to the solo in Stand And Deliver? Awfully similar. Not saying TS ripped Adam & Marco off, but it was hard to miss the similarities when I first heard "We're Not Gonna Take It".

To this day, I still laugh out loud at the PMRC, including Al Gore and others at the Senate Hearings on rock lyrics, that made a list called "The Filthy Fifteen". "We're Not Gonna Take It" was on the list. (*facepalm*) THAT list/hearing was an epic conglomeration of hubris, stupidity, dishonesty, and cluelessness mixed all in one. Hmmm... "Filthy"? REALLY??? (*re-reads lyrics*) Nope. No cursing. No violent depictions, no CALLS to violence... Gee, whaddaya know? Politicians (and in this case, their wives too) LIED again.

Sorry Dee, you don't get credit for the videos Van Halen put out following WNGT. They created and released a similarly conceptual video for "Pretty Woman" before your video. That video also was the first video banned on MTV. So, nope. Like your music, but claiming others copied you when they didn't, is kind of skeezy.

A strange religious prude step-aunt of mine gave me this album (on tape) for my birthday or Xmas back a year or two after it had come out. I was about 14. I kind of appreciated the effort, but it was a bit cringeworthy. Such an obvious attempt to try to be cool with the teenaged boy. "OK. Yeah, I know this song, and it was alright. I just can't listen to this album though." Anyway, interesting little talk.

Why? Because they only had one hit? Most metal bands get derided and lose street cred for having any hits at all. You can have a hit accidentally. It happened to Black Sabbath with Paranoid, and Queensryche had Silent Lucidity. Can you take those bands seriously? In contrast, if one hit isn't enough to be taken seriously, actually they were a two hit wonder in the North American market, and a 4 hit wonder in the UK. Either way, they had a more successful career than most.
