Painting white cavalry can be daunting, as white often seems to be. No longer! The same as any other colour it's just a case of planning a little ahead, choosing the colours that'll work for what you have in mind, and getting out the brushes. Don't overthink the work ahead!
Brian the Disco Theory Horse can be found here: www.warhammer-... As well, there are a couple of additional colour schemes for horses there which might prove useful!
Check out The Price of Crowns 2 currently on Kickstarter: www.kickstarte...
Finally, if you want to see an even quicker method of simply shading and drybrushing white cavalry that actually looks rather good, check out this video from Bastion Games for inspiration: • Painting White Horses ...

Ah yes, painting a mini and then realizing it would have been much easier to paint it in separate pieces and THEN fully assemble it, but only realizing that AFTER you're 75% done. Been there more than I care to admit. Mini looks great, Horse turned out fantastic.

Really nice work SSS. I have no chance of getting close to your lovely work hehe . This will be the future of wargaming . Buying STL files . It cuts out shipping costs which can be put towards better models and painting. Plus getting, for example the minor nations that have no hope of getting tooled up for, from the Rhine Countries inc Artillery and cavalry

There's been another release from this chap featuring a couple more of the minor nations of the Confederation of the Rhine, it's been fascinating seeing them come to life. Not having to wait for shipping and handling is certainly a bonus from my perspective, too! 😂

Great tutorial as always.. now heres an irrelevant question for you, if you had to pick the best German infantry kit from bolt action which would it be?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 года назад
It depends an awful lot on what you mean by 'best' though! If I were pushed to answer without any more input, I'd probably say the Grenadiers. It's showing its age a little now, but it's an excellent box with a ton of weapon options. The Afrika Korps is a more recent box that's likewise extremely good, with AT rifle and light mortar options in there as well; that'd be my pick for best value single box. But short of knowing more about what constitutes the best, I'd really just be guessing what question I'm really answering. ;D

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thank you for the informative reply I just ordered a box of Grenadiers there! My first bolt action box. I hope you have a great Christmas.
@davidcollins2648

I don't know why but it seems no one looks at horses eyes. You can give them a directional gaze that really adds to the emotional impact. The sculpting will limit your options as this figure does by having very small eyes. For instance a frightened horse will have bulging eyes, pupils forward and down with white showing to the rear and top of the cornea. The flare of the nostrils and the attitude of the ears also tell parts of the story. Your painting method is very good, but to be honest the legs look strange being segmented by dark lines. That is the sculpting but I find it too much of an abstraction. If you are printing these figures is there a program where you can go in and tweak things? For a top notch figure I would seriously consider remolding the eyes and lower legs in some fashion. I realize few wish to go to this level of detail but there's always a figure or 2 you wish you could do more with. All that said I only today discovered your channel and have subscribed. I can't wait to explore the rest of your videos so thank you!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 года назад
There's a lot to answer here, so I hope my being short won't come across as being more terse than intended! 😅 To summarize, the eyes are left as they are on purpose - my painting style is really more to get models on the table than for display, so ordinarily there's quite a few bits left deliberately either entirely unpainted or quite plain. If I'm not painting the rider's eyes, I'm surely not going to paint the horse's! But just so, they'd probably look a lot better with a little touch of white to properly convey the expression. As for sculpting 3D miniatures... strictly speaking, yes, it's possible to tweak them in a sculpting program of your choice (such as Blender or Meshmixer, which are both free) but it's rather like sculpting using traditional methods in that it's another skill set that requires practice to perfect. For miniatures viewed at table distance the deliberate exaggeration of those features is reminiscent of how many sculptors will exaggerate heads and hands on human figures. It'd not be impossible to adjust an STL before printing, but at least in my case I'd find it more trouble than it was worth. Now, tweaking heads and faces on some of the infantry figures I've got...

Also...for a white finish on any model that has some other colors on it i advise Ivory from Valejo...its almost like pure white but it tints a bit towards yellow...but its sooooo little that alongside the other colors you cannot see it

I actually didn't know that, though! I had always thought there was a distinction made between grey and closer to pure white horses. Never hurts to discover something new!
