I've only painted my home once and we used Behr. We used satin finish in the kids bedroom and the bathrooms and it is very easy to wash. The living room we used eggshell and I find it harder to get the grime off the walls from all the kids fingerprints. We did two coats in every room and they looked great. The colour is wonderful (a light blue for most of it and pale honey for the kids room). We're repainting again with Behr, so we're priming because we're changing the colour to chic grey to sell the condo and this is my first time painting doors and trim with semi-gloss. I find the semi-gloss really easy to use and the finish looks great.
Thank you James, I do a lot of restoration on antique furniture it's always good to know which is the best one especially protection against stains water stains etc etc
Thank you James. This is a very informative video with many good points, especially for those of us who find the prices of the premium paint we’ve always used has risen to a rather ridiculous high. Since I’m looking at having to paint the entire interior of our new (to us) house the lower price is good to see!
We've been using Behr for years. We use the eggshell P & P for walls- never flat- I don't like the look of flat and it's tough to clean. We use satin in the bathroom. We never prime with another product- maybe because we're always painting over eggshell behr. The coverage is really good. One can does a bedroom and two cans more than cover a large living room/dining combo. We find it covers really, really well
I don't paint often, but when I do it's Behr P&PinOne. Tried it about 10 years ago and it's all I use now. Disclaimer: I'm a Lowe's/Home Depot guy so I never go to just a paint store. I'm sure it would blow my mind to walk into a BM/SW/etc. store. LOL
I love refinishing furniture and pretty new to it. Have tried several products and it’s pretty confusing. Stumbled upon Behr paint & prime high gloss and was surprised to see how it transformed a beat up dinning set to look like new. Very nice product and good price. Little goes long way too. Leaves a perfect finish on wood surfaces. Very happy with it!!
I had that EXACT scenario happen with the paint + primer Behr paint. 90° outside in So. Cal. Paint in paint tray drying way too fast and then dealing with rolling over dried paint which ends up being rolled onto your roller and is a nightmare. New to the paint game and FINALLY figuring out why so many "boogers" end up in my paint and on the walls. Light bulb 💡 moment. Lesson learned hopefully now.
Behr is more assessable by it being in Home Depot. And the price point between behr and Benjamin Moore and Sherman Williams is huge. I wanted Benjamin Moore Revere pewter and Edgecomb Gray. But I needed two 5 gallons of both and the price was ridiculous. So I went with behr Cotten gray and halation. I do wish there where more videos on reviews on behr clots like there are on Benjamin Moore and Sherman Williams paint colors. I couldn’t find anything while I was paint shopping. I wanted reviews on different colors and what they go with and undertones. Even the best gray and Grage paint colors from behr. It’s living a entire customer base hanging dry that can’t find any research. I did I trial and error. I think I did good but I was extremely stressed out with no forum of reference.
I hate Behr paint. But you can get any color you want doesn't have to be a bear color. Don't let these designers stress you out. Pick what looks good to you.
Same thought! I love behr, quality and price point, the things that throws me off are the lack of reference, videos or reviews that can be access online. Compare to sw and bm, there are tons of videos you can find online.
Tanya, I prefer BM but will only buy it for my own home. For my rental unit, I use Behr which I also like and they mix Revere Pewter for me. I always use that color throughout the home in varying degrees. For accent walls, I may have them mix 200% Revere Pewter. They also mix BM Snowfall White for all the trims and kitchen cabinets. It is a nice combo.
I've painted 4 condo's with Behr paint primer in 2020 Gallery White. 2 coats. it works great. I buy 5 gallon buckets. Flat. For the bathrooms and kitchens I used Semi Gloss. For the kitchens cabinets I primed with Behr No75 Primer/sealer and Behr Trim and Cabinet paint.
I repainted my entire new to me house inside last year before I moved in. I used Behr paint exclusively as it fit into my budget best. I only primed one bedroom before applying two top coats as I was changing colors completely. In the rest of the house I used Behr Linen White. It went on beautifully and after two coats dried to a beautiful finish. I really like Behr paint. Thanks for this video. I love your channel! New sub here.
This is what I used in my kitchen a few months ago. We did Toasty Grey over Behr's Greenbelt 470D-6 with no issue at all. I was surprised. As a test we primed the wall with zinsser near the sink and I see no noticeable difference in how the primed vs unprimed walls look. The low VOCs which you didn't mention is also better for your health too! Another thing to add to this, the Greenbelt that was on the walls had no issue at all. It was painted probably 16 years ago and looked new. We might be selling our house and I thought green kitchen walls might not work too well. Now in our living room we used a dark red/orange color (sorry can't remember name right now) on top and it went on terribly. I'm not sure what happened to it.
Glad I watched this video, I’m using Behr paint to paint my room, I was planning on priming anyways. (I think even if a paint is a primer and paint it will always look better with primer first) I was planning on paint my bedroom Flat but listening to you I think eggshell will be better for me (I own dogs)
I LOVE Behr Premium Plus!!! Customer service at Stone Coat Countertops informed me that it can be used to prime my bar countertops (but NOT Behr Ultra). Behr Marquee was used to paint a chest of drawer in Coco Rum and I love it in the Satin Finish!! One coat was fine, but I went over a few spots a second time. Behr Dynasty Stain-Blocking Paint and Primer is good too…
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin were top notch like 10 years ago, but their quality has dropped so much in the past few years while their prices keep going up. I pretty much only use Behr at this point and most contractors in the area are doing the same.
Yes, I been painting for 8 years. It is what I do, always using Berh, no issues. The manager of SW was calling me to go and do business with them, I tried, I bought the super paint, I was not pleased, I decided on the emerald, and the same thing. The quality is not great at all, to be honest. I'm going back to Berh paint, I am a painter.
I bought paint and primer, flat, scuff defense. A nice paint, but I discovered really quick, that I definitely needed to prime. I've not painted my rooms in 8 years, and back then, I did prime before I painted. BUT, this time, I'm only going to spot prime some areas, and I've primed the trim, since it needed it. The walls are a light blue, and it is a darker blue that I'm painting over, so I'm confident that there will be full coverage. I've learned that you'll always have to put on two coats, even though the paint/primer may advertise that you need just one coat.
James..anyone else, also..do you have experience/opinions on Home Hardware's Beauti-Tone paint? I'm about to have my whole interior painted. Thanks in advance! ..And James, thankyou so much for your videos. I always learn a ton!
I used this paint to paint an old banister without any prep other than giving it a good washing, and it turned out beautifully. My question is: do you think it can be used to paint over wallpaper?
Probably not a good idea to paint over wallpaper at all. Maybe it’s something people do, idk, but I would imagine putting paint on an artificial substrate like wall paper isn’t gonna turn out well in the long run. Or make sense structurally, even if it does aesthetically for a time
Can you do a video for types of paint for rehabbing furniture wood, faux wood, veneers, plywood. I’ve gotten so many answers from Lowes, Home Dept,SW whether to use cabinet paint for say a dresser with much use vs latex and oil. Your expertise is truly valued and in love with your videos. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOU DO.
i liked the flat so far i used a dark color and its thinner than i expected but not bad i used it on a desk i built its still curing but doesnt seem that durable im not going to wash it very rough if i ever need to but i like the way it looks
Back when i started grad school i was let go so started a painting business to pay the bills, one client asked me to use Behr as it was highly rated in CR. I did and was impressed with the premium plus so much I have used it countless times on my personal homes. I replaced BM with this, it goes on better, holds color better and holds up over the years. I wanted to change the exterior of my home and had limited time so chose this. I applied back in 2014 and just now showing signs of failure after 10 New England seasons. This is an excellent paint for the money, IMO better than BM and on par with SW. Sherwin Williams is my other go to when wife complains that I’m using Behr, I need to save my SW cans then pour this in to shut her up and let her tell people we used SW.
Boy the internet is really pushing this paint , I'm not a professional painter , I'm a DIY er , I've bought this brand twice and was not happy with it , I'm painting my house and using Sherwin Williams top paint or Benjamin Moore aura paints
Painted my kitchen with the highly recommended and expensive paint from SW. Here I am 2 years later repainting with Behr because it looks like crap and has chipped sooo much. I degreased. I sanded everything between coats, and I took every prep step and primed with the best primer you could buy. Literally NONE of it made a difference.
The product never has claimed to have primer in it. It does not say "paint with primer". The simple idea of reading the label seems lost on a lot of people yet all the information you need to get the most out of this product is right there.
Um, the label actually does read “Paint and Primer” and states “use Behr Premium Plus Paint as a primer over properly prepared coated or Un coated surface”. Blah blah blah.
@@chriswalik8142 Again, 'paint and primer' & paint with primer ' are two different things. As you stated, over ' a properly prepared surface ' which means something is on the substrate. The amount of people that use this on bare drywall and complain about coverage baffles me.
I found some unmarked white paint in my new to me house that I think was Behr White (it's obvious the previous homeowners were big Home Depot fans, so I think it was Behr). I added Floetrol and the drying time was good - not too short. Might be worth a try for folks worried about open time.
Floetrol in general makes Behr and Valspar behave but won’t modify the body - it’s still a little runny. I got a little nervous using it in Ultra Spec 500 this past weekend - worked out well in the end. I only add it to paint when it’s hot and/or sunny outside, a pro painter turned me onto that with Kelly-Moore products.
I put this stuff over the ceiling (old paint) and walls (mew drywall) in some rooms in my house. When working on replacing the drywall in some places I had the paint pull off the ceiling in a few places where the tape was holding up plastic. I thought it might have been the old paint, but I noticed it also pulled off of the patched areas that were bare drywall mud. So I would definitely prime or seal the drywall before painting.
TBH - I’ve been too spoiled by Kelly-Moore(a local paint brand to California and Texas) and Ben Moore when it comes to paint, I’m no pro either. I used to bash Behr but they’ve improved a lot since I first painted. It does dry and flash quickly. I used Behr on ceilings, Regal Select or Scuff-X on walls at my parent’s place. I’m helping a friend paint, he’s gotten a few gallons of Ultra and Marquee - not bad. Floetrol makes it behave better if the humidity is low/ambient temp is high. You can do a lot worse than Behr, IMO.
Behr paint premium plus twice I’ve had issues it just doesn’t cover 4 Coats later, and it still won’t cover color fast at Walmart is made by Sherwin-Williams far superior paint. I’ve never had to go more than two coats.
Im a Behr Rep in California and this is the conversation I have to have with every other customer. The higer amounts of binders and 100% Acrylics allows for the verbiage of paint and Primer. Acrylic and vinyl products wont allow this prime feature.
I’ve enjoyed using Behr paint in my homes. I’m shocked at the price difference btwn it and let’s say Sherwin Williams which I just purchased for $72/gal. I’m not a professional painter but I don’t think there is $45/gal difference in the coverage, usabilitt, or durability.
Thankyou, I'm planning to paint the house next week, walls are painted like a beige and I'm going to paint them a lighter grey, should I prime over the existing paint or just do the 2 coats
I used this in a bedroom office. I only did one coat, but noticed a few areas with some light specks that I had to touch up. In a higher traffic visible room I would do two coats. I rate it as better to use than aura, which is more finicky in my opinion. Not sure how the Behr premium will hold up with washing however. I’d try it again in another room for sure👍
Thanks for sharing your experience Coleen! Normally I wouldn't recommend just one coat of paint, unless it was the exact same color and you were just freshening it up. Because even if it covers, you're not going to to get the full quality of the color.
So taking over a project of painting the upstairs tenants walls after the painters didn't show up again and it seems that the walls had been previously painted with oil based paint 😳 so the paint hey were using to paint over the old oil based walls was this Behr all in one stuff but already on the walls that are done its not adhering well. Should there have been additional primer used first should I go get primer and prime with something else before continuing on where they left off?
I used this product with the semi-gloss, the guy in the shop told me that it doesn't need a primer for new unfinished plywood, and I applied 2 coats, and waited one day between the two, and unfortunately, the surface is still sticky, even today is the forth day for the whole process. I went back to the shop, and there was a lady there who told me NO!! I have to use a primer for new plywood, and I have to sand back the whole desk and to apply a primer then the paint, and now really I am confused and I need an answer. and if I can use any product on the top of this paint to prevent it from this stickiness and hand print stains without the need to sand and repeat the whole process again!! CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE?
I have a stained window sill, I want to sand and paint it flat white, which one of these would you suggest, the flat or eggshell? Also, should I prime the window sill or just paint the window sill after sanding?
I bought this paint to use on my bonus room. I opened the can, and it smelled like rotten eggs or Sulphur. It was unusable and I had to take it back. I will be going with a different brand of paint to use on my room.
I am currently having a bad experience with Behr Premium Plus paint from Home depot. 1) The coverage is pretty bad, requiring me to fill in many pinholes and stippled areas 2) The color from my first gallon to the 2nd is off, 2nd gallon much lighter. You can clearly see the demarcation from one gallon to the other on one wall. 3) The quart I then got to fill in remaining missed spots is another color! My walls are splotchy, almost as if I had attempted to sponge over with a very slightly more purple cornflower. Since I brushed in the missed spots on 2 walls with the same (first) gallon, they are OK. Now I will be going back to see if their "satisfaction guaranteed" sign is true, will get another gallon and roll over the 2 splotchy walls. Never getting Home Depot paint again.
I talked to one of the managers about my problem, he said it "just happens sometimes". Well I got a free gallon of Behr paint and it is AGAIN, the same more purply cornflower, evident from the spot of paint on the lid. I will NOT use this gallon. I want the original color! I am definitely NOT satisfied!
Hey, thanks for reaching out. You can paint over an oil-based primer with latex with the proper preparation. If you apply latex paint over an oil-based primer without preparing the surface first, the paint will not stick properly and will likely crack or peel. So, you might need a bonding primer, a product like Stix for example. Hope that helps!
I am between using this and Sherwin Williams Captivate to paint my whole basement. I am able to get both at about the same price. Which do you think is better?
I prefer Behr Premium Plus over Sherwin Williams in the basement, because I’ve noticed that doors painted with Behr Premium Plus survived water damage better…👀
Trying to decide on which Behr paint to use on exterior (Hardi siding). Consumer Reports rated Marquee best for interior , but poor for exterior. Behr Premium Plus Ultra was rated best for exterior. Anyone use this? Appreciate any feedback.
So I use this product same one paint and primer but did the ENAMAL not LATEX. My question is what do you recommend to seal? I’m thinking because it’s a bookcase I can do a wax Finnish or a VARATHANE Diamon wood finish ( water base) interior . Or thinking POLYCRYLIC ( protective Finish ) in matte . Ok I can’t decide. Please let me know I’m just not sure . HELP
I've used quite a lot of Behr Premium Plus in eggshell and I'm not happy with the results. It doesn't cover well and although it does seem to have some viscosity it doesn't spread very well or level out properly. It seems to dry so quickly that it leaves brush and roller marks on your wall that you just can't get rid of. So, I'm done with Behr and I'm going to look for something better. I used Color your World paint years ago and it was my favourite but there isn't a store nearby...I'll keep looking.
@Dave Ewersmann crazy as it sounds...I put organic neutral essential oil in my paint and it cuts down on the odor trememdously. When I was out of essential oils... I used vanilla extract. Seriously. I've also used Royal from Ace...and you're absolutely correct.
Valspar sucks! I have used it twice with terrible results. It was a bedroom. I cleaned the walls and they were dry. I painted two coats with valspar. After 3 days, I could peel the paint off with fingers And no, I did not paint over oil paint. I painted another wall with cheap walmart colorplace. After a couple of hours, it was dry and wouldn't peel off. Valspar in my opinion is garbage. My new go to paint is Behr Marquee. It's thicker and it does cover in one coat. Excellent product 👍👍
@Dave Ewersmann Yeah ok .I know people that use SW and had to use two coats while I had used Behr and only one coat on some surfaces. No paint is really made for one coat anyway, even if it says so on the label. Valspar is also good.
What do you think of their Marquee vinyl siding paint. How does it stand up to Sherwin and Benjamin in durability. Live in Edmonton Alberta Canada where weather can take its toll.
I've used a lot of behr I agree with your points, it's hard to go spend 20-30 more a gallon and not get that much more. Yes there are better paints but behr is great for the price
I have Glidden paint, cool slate, in the bathroom. When I did a light sanding, the paint peeled and made the spot bigger, so I used Kilz Primer (spackle to smooth the enlarged spot), then I sanded and painted the area. In another bathroom, I noticed a pucker near the ceiling, whereas paint didn’t adhere well in the corner, so I used ready mixed Joint Compound, sanded it, and the newly applied paint appears to adhere. Fast Dex would have worked as well.
I hate to tell you this! I painted a kitchen using Behr paint it came out horrible very streaky and didn't cover well at all! I'm so upset and don't know what to do now! The walls were semi-gloss light yellow and I use ultra white semi-gloss also the semi-gloss looked flat opposed to being semi-gloss!
@@thepaintpeople it is one of the worst experiences that I ever had while painting I used three coats then went out and got a $65 can of Benjamin Moore and it still looks streaky in some parts! From this day on I will always make sure that I get the best paint possible and get a sample to test it out first! Even though a paint might say, it covers in one coat...that's a false statement! The only way paint would cover in one coat, let's say your walls are yellow and you wanted to refresh them up? It would have to be the same brand and the same color from your last formula! Also, very misleading painting primer! The ratio is so low with the primer part of it! These are only my opinions and my experiences! ✌️
My issue with Behr paint is it can be sensitive to chemicals, so think bathroom and cleaning it. I have also used their exterior product and it wasn't that great. It stained fairly easily with mildew, and this was a semi-gloss for exterior use. It does cover well and it does clean well minus its sensitivity to certain chemicals. But I just believe Benjamin Moore makes a superior product when it comes to keeping the color in the paint.
That’s good to know. My question was it’s long term sustainability. I only worked with it once on a job years ago and it was super easy to work with, covered fantastically and was a consistency I really liked but I didnt know if it was chemically the most durable. Benjamin Moore I like a lot as well
@@alexkain8564 Just painted my shed with Benjamin Moore Aura exterior. Having used several Bear products, and also several Benjamin Moore products I'm not going back. The simple question is how much better is Marquee compared to bear ultra premium, and why is it better if so?
@@autohelix Behr Marquee is much better than Ultra. Its worth a try because you can get a one coat finish in a variety of colors. Over 200 + colors can go into Marquee and it makes it one coat and you are done. It really is great paint. Also you can get Benjamin Moore colors in Behr Marquee paint as Home Depot has the ability to color match a BM color into the Marquee paint for you.
Awsome paint for the price stop buying paint stores overpriced paint they dont care about homeowners they put the prices up and painters pay half the price homeowners do And charge the customer full price. Shady business practices to me.
Can an exterior formulated paint, like Aura Exterior be used on the interior in a high use room like a kid's play room? I am thinking it may offer greater endurance and washability.
Hi I work at ace hardware. The exterior formula you can used it indoor. Is design for outside because they add mildew and extra protection for the element outside. I love a satin or gloss finish😀
@Janice Patton Thank you for relating your experiences. Good to know, and good that there are plenty enough interior paint choices to choose from. Thank you!
something happened recently to the flat paint at Home Depot.... it's now a matt finish and the matt finish is eggshell and the eggshell is satin.. the only way to get flat paint is to buy ceiling flat and tinting it is only from the paint chips, you can't bring in a chip of paint to match.
Unfortunately there will always be those people who think expensive = better and ive used both i will gladly say SW is always recommend and it is trash paint.
You are never wrong to prime, but sometimes it is overkill: If your walls are well sealed, not having stains, excessive patching, and not too glossy, a paint and primer paint will save having to mess with a dedicated primer. One advantage of a paint and prier paint is that your "primer" is the exact color of the finish coat, making "holidays" much less likely. Good, 100% acrylic paints have always been decent paint and primer. The economic consideration for the Pro is that his/her time is more valuable than the cost of the paint itself. The Pro does not have to stop and tint a primer to be close to the finish coat.
I've done 3 coats of behr semi-gloss on my current builders-beige trim and after 3 coats theres still beige showing through. I'm ready to set my bathroom on fire. SOS what am I doing wrong. Painting ultra pure white semi-gloss onto builders-beige semi-gloss.😭
I'm having the same problem. I got ultra white semi gloss for my tiny bathroom and I doubt if it's been painted in decades. Certainly not in the 22 yrs I've own the house. It's so thick it's hard to spread and I've almost used over a quarter gallon on the ceiling alone. A few yrs ago, I painted my whole living room and dinning room an off white semi gloss Valspar and used 4 gallons and took me just a few days. I just hope I get get my bathroom finished with one gallon. It's so hard to work with.
Maybe you have done this but, what is the real difference between Behr ultra PP and just reg old Behr PP? Also - GET THIS - I got a behr MARQUEE color in Ultra and it painted with one coat over a somewhat darker color. I think the pigments are what make Marquee a one coat, and getting it in another behr paint (at least ULTRA) makes it a one coat paint, too... Prove me wrong! The color I used was Perfect Landing, a Marquee Color, in Behr Ultra Premium Plus Eggshell, Ultra Pure White Base (I think 2750). Painted over a dark grey, one coat. Even the brushwork was one coat except up at a ceiling where I did a lot of precision dragging.
I’ve tried Behr over the years. Their Epoxy floor paint is garbage. My go to is Benjamin Moore. Actually the PPG Glidden is pretty good as is Valspar. I’ve been painting since 1970.
@@JamesBond-vi2eh Most everything they make is garbage Mr.Bond. I’ve been painting for over 35 years and it’s one of the worst paint manufactures ever to exist. Valspar, Glidden, Olympic, all average paints that outperform Behr. About the only thing they make that is good is Marquee. But why pay all that money. Thank you for the comment Mr.Bond or can I call you James? 🪣😃
Let's just get one thing out of the way. There is no such thing like paint and proper in one, why? They are chemically different and you can't mix them together. All this paint is is just regular paint just with bit more solids added to it,and its not nearly function as using paint and primer separately.
One of the worst paints I have ever used. I was a professional painter back in the 80s for a few years and have used many brands. The paint dry time is way to short to get a good workable wet edge resulting in overlap lines everywhere. Used it once but never again.
I use Glidden or PPG over Behr, but yes, Benjamin Moore is the best, Sherwin Williams pretty good. Forget the old brands like Dutch Boy, they’re just names now. Remember Conlux? 5 gallons was cheap but the paint was good.
