It can be tricky to know which of the Behringer classic mono synth releases will suit you best. Having collected all of them over the past few months, here are my thoughts on which synth is best for what, and why you might like which one.
Help out the channel by clicking through to Perfect Circuit below. I get a small commission for any purchases made via the link!

Featuring the Pro-1, WASP Deluxe, Model D, and CAT (and chat about the K2). Not featuring the Neutron, as that isn't a remake.
All chat. Nae sounds.
p.s. on the K2, I thought I had mentioned this, but the patch bay standard is different from other synths, in that it uses Hz/V instead of v/Oct. This means that you can't as easily patch it into your modular system without a convertor. It is only really critical for pitch, but worth noting.
I've put together a few different sample packs with patches in semi-tones from C1 to C4. All in WAV at 44.1kHz 24bit, and with an .XPM keygroup file for Akai devices, optimised for the FORCE.
Download a CAT Sample Pack here, complete with a bunch of patches I created, along with an Akai XPM keygroup file.: gum.co/catsamplepack

The Wasp not only have a unique filter, it has unique oscillators as well, which actually aren't voltage controlled, and not really DCO's either, sometimes they are called digital, but that's not really true *either*... But yeah, they start with a high-frequency square, and then divide it down to the right frequency depending on the key pressed, and then you have a PLL to add a glide, and finally that square wave is waveshaped into a sawtooth and PWM. And somehow, all that complicated circuitry was cheaper to make than a normal VCO. :-)

Great descriptions! I have the same four as you, and also a MS-20 Mini. I totally agree about the Wasp. I think it's very easy to get interesting, musical sounds that are a bit "different". Therefore I tend to start the Wasp more often. Maybe it's those strange oscillators in the Wasp? I don't know. I also agree that Pro-1 is, maybe not boring, but the least inspiring of the bunch.

Absolutely, please do, as it is always interesting to see what different people like and how they interpret how a unit best resides within their workflow or when revisiting a piece for experiments . I overlooked the Wasp and ended up with a West Pest somehow. The Wasp doesn’t do the same things but the sounds are there. The Wasp would have been a better choice for me workflow wise and they come up for an attractive price in the used market. I now think paired up, that a Wasp/West Pest could make for some serious West Coast meets UK semi modular generative mess.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts in such a highly entertaining and interesting way. I'm so thrilled to know that you like the wasp, I own two of those in addition to the lovely little Doepfer wasp filter. I suppose it's a wasp's nest of cables and good for making music on the fly. (Please excuse the terrible dad jokes and puns, I couldn't resist). I love the more '70s than the '70s beautiful melodies and harmonies from it. This model fascinated me in the 1980s because it was the first ever synth bought by the very wonderful Bon Harris of Nitzer Ebb when he was a callow and enthusiastic young man. I will look forward to your future videos with great interest. All the best to you.

@@StephenMcLeod so I ended up purchasing the K2, just received it today. It is completely out of tune, like horribly out of tune. I know analogue synths need time to warm up, I gave it a good 30 minutes and it’s still all over the place. The calibration is off as well. It’s a shame as I really did want to like it and keep it. So for me all synths should have sliders like the vintage goodies JP8 and CS 80.Honest i REALLY DISLIKE knobs as a user interface on synths (take a envelope with sliders, you can actually see the curve graphical)suites me and makes it easy to set up and (re)create sounds fast.

First off, I could just listen to you talk about anything for an hour. Sottish people just sound brilliant, and it's great. The only one I own is the Model D, and that's what I'd recommend as the first choice. The MiniMoog is probably the greatest synthesizer design of all time and it was revolutionary when it came out. The sound of this appears on more songs than any other. It's a great live performance instrument and excels in almost every area--leads, bass, and chords. The Moog filter is classic and gives it a fat, resonant sound that's just beautiful. If you can afford the extra money, than the Poly D is even better--better in some ways than a real Mini that costs 5 times as much. I could see where a new user could find the Mini a little unintuitive at first, but, once you get used to it, it's the simplist and most intuitive synth that I know of. I still find Odysseys and 2600's to be unintuitive, but I can tell you what every knob and switch on a Mini does in semi-darkness on stage with almost no thought. The others might be nice to have also (I have some vintage monos that I keep around for kicks), but, honestly, the Model D is probably the only mono synth you'd ever need.

I just got a K2 because, like you said, I wanted to learn from the extensive patch bay without needing two or more units to be patched together. It will be fun just learning what you already know about it for myself. Good job of just telling the facts of the features for each unit. Maybe you could demonstrate using a sequencer with the WASP? I have a beatstep pro and not sure how to connect it to the K2 for sequencing.

For the BeatStep Pro, you can just hook up the MIDI output to the MIDI input of the K2. You'll need to use the adapter for the MIDI Minijack that comes with the BSP though.

I have a Model D and Neutron and I'd love to add a Wasp to the collection. I feel the same way about the K2 and I'd rather wait for the Pro 800 instead of the Pro 1. There have been so many announced in this format too that I'm interested in like the Solina. I also have a TD3, RD6, MS1 and Deepmind12 and all of it sounds great. I also wonder why they didn't make The Crave in the same format as the other desktop synths. It would have been nice to put that in a rack with the Neutron with all the patching capabilities and the sequencer. It may sound silly but the form factor was the only reason I didn't get a Crave.

Dude! You have 1980s Roland half-racks! I also didn't get the K-2, but I can see this ready difference to the S-20: the size of the patch cables. Otherwise, I found it really hard to understand -- almost as difficult as the Odyssey (but that's another story). The Boog, I suspect, was Behringer's salvo-across-the-bow to the music world. I don't immediately understand it either, which is part of what makes it interesting. In contrast, the Wasp is simple **and** idiosyncratic. I didn't expect it to be at all interesting, just figured I'd use it for simple background sounds. But it's fantastically unique, and -- I agree -- immediate. For me, it was a real confidence-builder. Ha ha! I agree, the Pro1 does lack idiosyncracies; no real character. Very solid. Great basic analog synth. The Cat I got because I enjoyed the Wasp so much. Again, I completely agree with your point: interface strongly affects results. Like the Wasp, I have no real expectations; it's just for additional minor backgrounds.

The Cat Is awesome at getting those 'video game' style sounds yeah chip tune refers to lofi lower bit, The cat is VERY unique esp witht the LFO delay (very cool for vibratos and such) the cat is amazing for Bass as it can g a whopping two octaves down or up, outside of the normal range it can hit. I totally agree with the Pro one However i will say , The same way it is GREAT for Bass, I can create Such Lush pads, and string sounds that it almost doesnt need a Polyphonic accompanyment, Im running the Crave, The Cat, The RD6, The TD3, The pro One, And i have their PCA3 mixer module, also a Minilogue, a Tr8 Aria Ran by Novation sl Mk3 ( control 32 synths at once hell yeah) no pc :) anyway Bheringer really should incorperate Midi functionality like full. like on my keyboard i can control every parameter of my minilogue and tr8. highly suggestable, especially for modular incorperation, it has two cv outs with sync. I LOVE MY CAT., AND PRO ONE being they all have the 3340 oscilators yes one CAN make them all sound DAMN SIMILAR however with waveshaping, filters adsrs etc, (which are different per synth) they do all have a distinctly different sound. i did not want to like my pro one ....(im kind of an OG snob with equipment.) and i looooooooove mine. I was originally gonna Rack my Cat and the Pro one, and i hate to say this but funcionality wise the cat is the only one id rack,. now ( as it has both midi in out on front panel and usb, when you rack the pro one you lose the usb, and midi through that is built to the box- (no updates?) this may seem like small potatoes but....

I think the ONLY ones complaining about the "Ethics" of cloning classic synths are those who own the originals and fear their priceless treasures would lose some wealth when all the "poor plebs" out there are suddenly able to have these synthesizers and their sounds available too. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with cloning electronic Instruments and making it possible for everyone to afford them. I own the Poly-D and personally that is about as CLOSE to me ever owning a MiniMoog Model D in any form and i am absolutely happy with it. Especially the feature additions of Uli's Clones are worth checking out modern incarnations of these classics. Because you can tell Uli is a HUGE nerd and loves these classic synths. The clones always feel like they pay tribute to their originals and with the Kobol they even bring back Synths that barely anyone even heard of back then. So going through these clones is like a history lesson. And i'm already looking forward to the Pro12, the DS80, the Behremin and the Polyvoks clone :) I have hopes that Behringer might release a revision of their Wasp clone that comes with a membrane keyboard as well.
