Today we check out the $20 wonderchild (supposedly), the internet seems to be raving about the Behringer XM8500, but how good could a mic this cheap actually be? Well to be honest, shockingly good. At $60 for that interface and $25 for the mic plus maybe another $20 for a budget stand or boom arm of some kind that's $100 and you can get a decent USB dynamic mic for that price. If it was really $50 for a decent interface and that mic I'd gladly pick it up.

I am working in a youth club and we have 5 SM58 as Vocal Mics which have been working since the late 90s. Every 10 Years or so we‘ll switch the Grills they look pretty beat up by this point, but they are sounding as if i had walked into my local Music Store and bought them today. For the rehearsal spaces and as spares, we have a few XM8500. The kids go through them like freakin‘ popcorn. We buy like 5 of them every half year to a year. In that time period, they will stop getting low-end and tend to get really harsh and shrill or get very muffled or stop working all together. I know that at that price point, that is to be expected. But i think at least if you want to be gigging, investing in a 57 or a 58 will pay itself in the matter of months, cause the Behringers WILL break on you in the most unpleasant moments.

My question to you would be this: Is a youth club, and the treatment that the kids give mics, actually representative of how musicians would treat a mic? I don't doubt that the SM58 is built more robust. However the question is: Is the XM8500 up the construction standards that could handle most musicians' environments. Given that kids will put chewing gum on things, dunk things under water, pound on things, etc., does this really pertain to how a musician will experience the durability of the XM8500 ? I used a Chinese clone of an SM58 for 10 years: The GLS Audio ES58. During that 10 years, I dropped it onto concrete, accidentally, and it was subject to different situations, and it performed flawlessly. It still sounds good. So, I'm a bit skeptical that the environment with the kids would actually represent the kinds of environments that a musician would subject a microphone, to.

Great as always. Behringer is so underrated for beginners. 20 years ago this would be state of the art! Talent is 80%. I've heard demos made on a $20 cassette recorder that I would have paid for. Talent over environment or equipment.

Believe it or not, this mic has been around for more than 20 years. Can’t speak to any changes that have been made to the design, but it’s been a budget hitter in the live sound world for awhile.

Super interesting, to my ears though the SM57 had more detail for clean guitar and spoken word. The XM8500 handled high distortion 'dirty' sound better than the SM57. Maybe the extra "muddiness" worked well to tone down some of the extra crunchy distortion so that it ended up sounding more detailed, whereas the SM57 almost sounded like it got overblown and ended up losing a lot of the detail it captures with clean guitar audio or spoken word audio.

Yeah I was really shocked at the XM8500 and how it handled the dirty tone, surprisingly tasteful high end, I even recorded it twice because I thought something went wrong lol

Man, this really made me appreciate how good the SM57 is. I thought I would like the XM8500, but hearing how well it does with the distorted guitars really put it into perspective as to why it's still such a widely used mic today.

in my country a xm8500 is around 70 dollar's and a sm57 is 200 dollars note: the minimum wage is 280 dollar's yes I'm in pain

Great stuff as always. The 57 was my entry point into mics at the beginning of the pandemic. I have more expensive stuff, but I still use it quite a bit. Someone who wants to see how they like recording would do incredibly well with the all behringer setup. I was forced to use my behringer interface a couple weeks ago. It was totally fine. That company is sketch though. But being set up for 50 bucks cures a lot of ills

Makes me wonder about the Peavey kits I used to run in my old music jams, I dont have them anymore but it was an SM58 knock off with a switch but came in a kit with the mic, boom stand, soft bag that fits it all and a very crap xlr cable for 50 CADS -- they worked well for PA singing and held up with drunks dropping them other than the cables that again were the worst ive ever seen, but the stand and mic super solid

I still think you definitely had to compare it to your SM7, it's mind blowing how this microphone is just decent enough for many recording applications where thousands of uninformed people could've saved up 380 dollars with a bit of EQ. the world needs to watch this!!

Thanks for this video! Funny enough: I was able to not only hear the difference, but actually tell, which recording was which, without trying. Why? Because I own a Behringer BA 85A and a Shure Beta 58A. And I noticed exactly, what you described yourself on your comparison between the SM57 and the XM8500: That certain fuzzyness on the higher registers and a lot of mud the lower you go. That being said, the overall bang for buck I got was still shocking. Even tho my BA 85A isn’t as quiet as my Beta 58A, it still destroyed my RØDE Procaster in terms of rejecting background noise. So the pickup pattern works, even if the self noise level is rather „meh“. So yes, i Don’t like to admit it, but the CHEAP dynamic microphones from Behringer are actually worth it, if you can accept Behringers questionable ethics towards intellectual property.

The Pyle-Pro PDMIC78 is a great mic. If it isn't balanced, it's a simple solder job to make it so, and it make the mic sound great. Works great for drums and stuff.

I use up to 6 of the XM8500s for podcasting, they give great isolation at an unbeatable price (it’s available as “Nerdfest” if you want to hear. That’s in an untreated room with 4 or 5 people recording at once, using noise gates and some multitrack editing to reduce crossover and clean it up.)

noise gates is last resort to me, but with 4-5 mics at the same time there's probably no other way. great way to reduce self-noise (and avoid using noise gates) would be getting cheap mic boosters, but that's both very clunky as well as pricey (additional xlr cables, costs of mic boosters)

As $20 mics go, it's a great one. But as $90 mics go, the SM57/58 are pretty much unbeatable, and have been for decades. Every time you switch to the 57, it's like taking a blanket off the speakers.

hey, if I wanted to record audio memories from elderly family members using just my macbook and these xm8500 (x2 one for me to ask questions, one for family to recall memories) what equipment would i need? The uphoria has 1 mic input, obviously I would need a mixer with 2 mic inputs was looking at the xenyx 302usb mixer but that only has 1 mic input too...I am stumped and never used recording equipment before so this is all new to me.

I wonder how it will sound like when I finally can try this 2 mic setup: one is Samson CO1 the other is SM57 with the Shure foam made for it (which is not the same as a SM58 soundwise btw, it sounds more natural)

Owning a 58 and the xm8500 it’s insane how similar they are. I do have to put about 3db more into the sm58 so everyone’s info is the same. With slight EQ, its hard for me to tell the difference if I go back and forth while reading aloud. My 58 sounds a bit more smooth, like how people view the 7b compared to the 58.

I think I should get XM8500 asap and compared it to my SL75C because back when I bought it my ideal was that it will be the nearest to SM57/58 replica, but I'm a little disappointed with it, the gain is notably low, I have to crack up my audio interface gain (around 80-90%) but in a result of noise. is this right? I use UMC202 HD, this is my first dynamic mic, I used to use a condenser mic and never pass 50% gain in the interface in a pretty much similar untreated room, and my noise level was always acceptable

Penny-pinching me bought a SHURE SM48LC istead of one of its renowned siblings quite a while ago - and: I totally love it 💕 Even bought a second one for stereo recordings. In theory, the SM57/58 should be »superior«, but I don't care. My 48s are perfect for vocals and acoustic guitar and that's what convinced my ears. Highly recommended though by no means as affordable as Uli B.'s mics.

Few years ago I started doing some voice recording. Without doing any real research I bought the xm8500 just because it looked like the perfect starting point. It was so cheap I could throw it away immediately if I didnt like it. I'm still using the mic to this day :D

@@ghostly964 it's been 3 years and I am satisfied with it. The recordings on my channel have been made with it, so you can check them to get an idea of its quality. Keep in mind I record in my room and not in a studio and there's some amateur sound editing

I have used the XM8500 for many years in live settings with rock and metal and praise bands. I have never had a soundman notice it wasn't a SM58 much less ask to switchpit my mic.

I have 2 doubts. 1. Your recommendation that this is good enough for bare minimum setup. I saw some videos that pencil condenser mic (mostly saw samson c02) should be used Instead of shotgun for untreated room. Is this true? 2. As stated above, the Samson c02 is sometimes titled as indoor dialogue mic. Are there different mic for different audio? My usecase is music recording & sometimes interview.

Hi I think I can answer this 1. Yes shotgun mics should not be used indoors in untreated rooms. The effect of comb filtering on shotgun mics is very pronounced and can render the audio unusable. Pencil mics don't suffer from this nearly as much because they don't have interference baffles. The c02 will work. I own a behringer b-5 that is a pretty dang good instrument and dialogue mic. If you are planning on using this for singing, I would recommend an LDC instead. SDCs usually can't be close-mic'd to a singer without sounding uncomfortably bright. They will sound good from a distance but then you have to deal with room noise and reflections. You can get much closer to and LDC and use the proximity effect (many are designed this way) and being so close tends to minimize interference from room reflections. The Behringer b-1 is a good budget LDC for that.

I might be able to answer this. If you're talking about using an untreated room with traffic or industrial noise outside, I would struggle to recommend any of those to be honest. I think a better option would be to get cardioid or supercardioid shure SM family mic, especially the SM57 or the Beta57. These do an excellent job at noise rejection and have a very agreeable sound that works well on most sources. Of course this also depends on your use case. If you are a musician recording vocals, I think an equal concern with room rejection is the tuning of the mic and how it complements your voice. Keep in mind you can get away with getting very close up on a brighter mic to engage the proximity effect and this will greatly cut down room interference. A darker mic will not be able to do this as well. The Behringer B1 comes to mind as one that is designed to do this. At this price point though, the tuning and how the mic complements your voice (at a reasonable distance) will probably be more important in the long run. Nothing is worse than getting a mic that doesn't play well with your voice.

I prefer the XM8500 for vocals over the SM57. I just bought the Rode NT1 5th Gen. The mic I really want is the MXL Revelation 2 multi polar pattern tube microphone. To me it sounds even better than the TLM103. BTW I am an audio engineer.

There is not standard answer to these questions other than use your ears. Put on a good pair of headphones, change the EQ as you are listening and choose the setting that sounds best for your particular needs. Same process applies for compression. It depends on the environment, the vocalist, the style you are going for - numerous factors.

In the acoustic guitar demo, I am curious why you oriented the mics nowhere near 90 degrees relative to the guitar neck. It looks like they are almost pointed at the sound hole. Does it boost the bass to match the midrange?

Pointing it at the sound hole picks up a more even bottom end without all the woofiness that will result from placing it directly in front of it. (I'm curious to know if you use a humidifier in your Taylor acoustic? I have a horror/miraculous recovery story about my Martin D28, and a Fender Acoustisonic Tele.)

@@AudioHaze There's an easy test you can do to give you an indication of problems: take one sheet of regular paper, printer paper or notebook paper, lay it flat on the bottom of your Taylor just behind the bridge and see if the paper slides under the bridge. If it does, you should have a qualified luthier give it good check up. 😎🎸😎

I have the Behringer and for $20 it's not bad. Will never replace the 57 but the build quality is workable. If you are starting off and just need some beater mics, you can absolutely start with the Behringers.

I through the years have had more people grab for an XM8500 than the SM58, so much so that I now have Just as many XM8500's as I do the SM58's. They both equally have their place, I love all my Shures but I like the 8500's just the same. It's all subjective at the end of the day really.

On most of the tests, I was drawn to the 8500. The only real standout was the acoustic guitar test imo which is the only instance I really would have preferred to use the Sm57. In general, if you want something brighter and “cleaner”, I think you should grab the 57, but if you like filthy grungy darker tones, grab the 8500. Better yet, have both

The quotes at the end are kind of tough to convince anyone of. It’s extremely difficult to make an sm7b sound bad, about as difficult as it is to make this behringer sound really good. Audio samples were great, overview and comparisons fantastic. The value the behringer offers is tremendous. Might get one for my daughter, I’ll buy the shure for me. 😂

I would actually disagree! I think there are plenty of people who misuse the SM7, and if you have a good chain and a good technique, its not hard to overtake the VO quality of a lot of SM7 users, simply because the the SM7 probably is the most improperly used mic out there, in my opinion :)

@@AudioHaze shoot me a vid of someone using an sm7b poorly. This I gotta see. When I bought mine, I bought a high quality interface with clean pre amps. A quality xlr cable. That's it, everything is fantastic. What are people doing wrong?

The Behringer is undeniably good value, but it's obvious listening to the test why the SM57 is the better mic :)

An interesting experiment is to remove the mesh ball grill. After all, the SM 57 just has a different grill than the SM 58. So how would removing the grill XM 8500 sound?

The sm57 definitely sounds better imo, but the xm8500 sounds great for a starter microphone if you want to learn how to eq the muddiness- might be a good learning experience for a beginner

Call me crazy but the clean and dirty electric guitar licks somehow felt brighter and poppier to me on the xm8500. The sm57 felt like it was occupying too much space in the lows

I have one for podcasts and it has exceeded my expectations. Putting a high quality windscreen over the xm8500 JUST RIGHT makes it sound damn near close to a high-end Shure mic as well. By the by, you said you use Gullfoss for EQ; are there any free versions or something comparable to that or possibly cheaper? I just want something simple to mess with the levels a bit since I'm a big beginner to that kind of thing.

Oh no! Perhaps your interface doesn't have enough gain? If you're running an AudioBox USB or something like that, it may not be able to power it

My 1st exposure to Behringer was the blatant Aphex and Mackie ripoffs... It taught me to be properly suspicious of them as a company, and especially the quasi-sociopathic Uli Behringer. I also had the classic Behringer graveyard in my garage... That said, I have a few B products that are just splendid ( Nuke 6000 4 channel power amp, a few active DI's and a pair of cheap passive pa speakers.). I'll also never forgive them for throwing Presonus an anchor when they purchased TC and promptly did away with access to the Firewire/AVB chips that Presonus was using for their Ai series digital mixers, leaving them with half baked functionality and more than a few frustrated and angry customers (I'm one of them). Conclusion: They are a horribly compromised company, yet so many of us have benefited from their IP thievery.

57 and 58 are not the same mic, they simply aren't. The thing about the Behringer (At 20 bucks) is, it's great for what it will do, but it's not that good for what it can't do. The same goes for the 57 and 58, these are stage mics that will last a thousand years, mine are over 20 years old and still do there job just fine. The most important thing is how they sound for what you are using them for, that's the same for ANY mic, trust your ears, test them out at a place like guitar center or the like, read the reviews, do your homework before you put down any money.
