when one uses sliders in lightroom the precision is high, for exposure it is 0,01. and you can have +-5 exposure values. When you tern knob for exposure what is the minimal change of exposure can you get with one knob step , or how many steps are there from full left to full right turn?

Hey Michael, yeah the X-Touch with encoder knobs is really what I was hoping the NanoKontrol would be, back then not knowing the critical difference between the stopped knobs vs. stopless encoder knobs. Good luck man, let us know how it goes!

Hello! Russell, another member of the podcast, uses a BCF-2000 from Behringer; it's much larger, plugs into the wall, and has motorized sliders in addition to encoder knobs. He demonstrates it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zH-yLXpvOiw.html

Thaat was a great demo! I received the X-touch yesterday and it works great! I just trying to figure out how to assign to one of the buttons "Past Settings from the previous photo", the same thing like the button "PREVIOUS" in the Develop mode. I'm not talking about "go to the next photo" just past the settings from the previous photo.
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
Thank you Juan, just trying to help out the community with our experience :-) As far as pasting settings from a previous photo, I don't use that command, but I believe that it is a little buggy/not yet working on the Mac. The Mac also has issues/bugs binding MIDI keys to keystroke combinations at times , and will not work with any keystroke combinations that use the Cmd key. Good luck, glad that it's working for you! I'd just watch the MIDI2LR forum for updates; it's a known issue, and the developer has been trying to hammer it out with Mac users on the forum.

Well , I'm a PC guy and it works great, I just need wanted the Previous to avoid the mouse, but is not a big deal. I'm very happy with this toy! And two of my friends/collegues already bought it too. On Ebay, there is a Music Store selling this as an open box (but it's Brand New, mine with a unopened box) for just $39
@NeverStark

I actually just bought one of those on ebay, yesterday! Looks like they're nearly sold out. Great deal. I saw a fancy looking Lightroom controller being marketed for about $450 when it comes out next year, and was really excited to find a DIY alternative. Can't wait to set it up.

Hey Pierre, your English is fine, it's not my native language either, I'm from Argentina. when I use the midi device it's just to adjust individual images and if I want to copy the settings to other photos, I use the keyboard, but you should check the last version of the MIDI2LR, I havent update mine yet.

Can someone help me? My knob are not working as i was expecting: when i switch from a photography to the next one, my knobs stay at the level of the previous photography. So for example if i set the exposure value to - 20 and then I procede to the next photo, the level of the second photo (unedited) will be correctly 0 but the knob will start from - 20 and so i will have to make it match with the current value (so bring it from 0 to - 20)in other to be able to start to change the value. Is there anything wrong that I've done in the configuration?
@mshea5906
@mshea5906 8 лет назад
Great! I have a couple of questions. 1. Does it have a SYNC function? 2. Can you program a knob to turn to adjust CROP? Thanks
@jandalight1598
@jandalight1598 8 лет назад
Hey M Shea, yeah there is a sync function (it has a built in sync function, but you can also assign the hotkey shortcut to a button if you're using it in windows). Yes, you can assign crop to knobs/sliders; it has (among a few others) options to control straighten angle, crop left, crop right, crop top, crop down, etc. via knob/slider :-) Works well!

I understand the benefits on quick adjustments on key parameters on a photo-to-photo basis. But any comments on time gain on editing larger packs of photos with lots of copy-pasting, syncing, working with a couple of presets and applying them while spitting through a couple of hundred raw files? Any real speed up there? Also, is it usable for the initial rating, selecting and filtering out pictures from a series? With usable I mean again, time gain.
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
For me, I can tell that I'm faster at editing, for instance, a whole wedding. Part of that might be because of my style of editing, where I am contantly adjusting blacks/whites/exp on a photo to photo basis even after I cut and paste settings to a set of images. For this reason, twiddling the knobs is faster than having to click and adjust with a mouse+keyboard. Personally, the speed gain is nice, but what is really advantageous about the setup is how much it saves my wrists/carpal tunnels. The reason i really pursued use of this Midi controller setup for LR is because i was getting alot of pain while editing in my hands, not to mention a bunch of wear on the arrow keys of my laptop, which isn't a cheap fix if they go truly bad (i edit exclusively on a Macbook pro). I would say that it's good for giving star ratings (use a rate up and rate down scheme on the buttons), but any careful selection of a subset of photos, I still use the touchpaid/mouse. Thanks for looking!

Do you know if it's possible to assign the 8 encoders to different sliders, as in different channels, so you can hit some button and have the same encoder control a different slider in lightroom? Or are you limited to just 8?

@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
Good question, but I believe so; as far as I know, each button will have an address specific to whatever you have connected to the system as a midi device.

Hi, are there any big differences between Midi2LR and PFixer? The function that interests me the most is the A/B switch for all of the exposure/contrast controls set to A mode, and all the HSL modes at B mode. Is it doable trough that script, or you need to buy PFixer for $100 (sic!) ? Also, is the fader at the behringer motorised or no?
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
You can set all your Exp/contrast controls to the A set and the HSL modes to the B set natively, no scripting, with MIDI2LR. If that's all you need, then I don't think PFixer is necessary unless you find MIDI2LR a bit unpolished/buggy. There is a great deal of extensibility in MIDI2LR that is somewhat buggy, but I've been very happy with the core functionality of being able to adjust image parameters in LR. The XTouch mini slider is NOT motorized, unfortunately.

Is it posible to avoid "non encoder" (on this video4:41) problem on www.arturia.com/products/hybrid-synths/beatstep/overview MIDI controler?
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
Hi Atruras, as long as your MIDI controller uses standard MIDI commands over USB, the encoder knobs on that controller you linked should work great and avoid the "non-encoder knob" issue. I'd check out the developer's forum at groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/midi2lr for people who are using other MIDI controllers than the usual Xtouch mini/BCF/BCF-2000s.

As far as I know, global functions such as photo next/prev., ratings +-, etc. work in loupe and dev mode equally. As far as adjustment parameters, I don't think the buttons such as exposure up and down work via the controller knobs. Try it out and let us know!

Can you explain in depth your whole wireless set up
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
I'm using a short USB mini-B cable to USB-A cable, that is connected to a Yamaha BT-01 USB MIDI to BT adapter that is pluged into a small USB power bank. In MacOS, open up the MIDI control panel (usually just spotlight "MIDI", and it should bring up the panel in teh search), then hit cmd+2 to get to the appropriate menu. Double click the bluetooth icon and turn on the Yamaha adapter that's connected to the XTouch Mini. connect to it in the control panel, and it should be able to work in MIDI2LR at that point. I would say to connect the MIDI device through BT to the computer before starting up MIDI2LR for the least troublesome setup. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
@HaoyuanRen
@HaoyuanRen 7 лет назад
Does this wireless adapter remap the keys so the computer recognizes them as a part of the Yamaha BT01 instead of the original controller? I am thinking about doing this but I am using LRControl and the settings are already made in program. If it's just a passthrough, then it would be great!
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
Hello Haoyuan, regarding the BT-01 USB MIDI adapter, as far as I know is translate the USB midi commands into a Bluetooth MIDI stream that the computer picks up. On a system level, MacOS (assuming windows as well) sees the adapter as just a source for MIDI commands and passes that to whatever app (in this case MIDI2LR) is listening for them. I think if you think about it as the BT connection just being a replacement for a simple USB connection, you'd be correct. Not sure how LRControl works, but if that is taking raw MIDI commands on a system level then translates them into whatever LR commands, it should probably work as well. I can't speak on how Windows handles things, but in MacOS, the OS itself sees the BT-01 adapter connected to Xtouch Mini as a bluetooth midi device. Good luck!
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
Oh Man, sorry that we're just seeing this, but just for background, I'm using Mac OS, which seems to have pretty decent native support in the OS for the Yamaha BT-01 USB MIDI to Bluetooth adapter. If you're using the BT-01, you basically plug on end into some power source (probably some USB power bank type thing like I have), then the mini USB cable coming off the X-Touch Mini plugs into the BT-01 from which it also draws power. In Mac OS, I found that I had to go into the MIDI settings of the OS (spotlight to "audio MIDI", it should come up), then go to window-->show midi studio, double click the bluetooth button, turn on the battery to the BT-01, Mac OS should see it at that point, so just click connect. Now, open Lightroom/MIDI2LR, and it should start moving stuff in the plugin. Use as normal from there.
@OLuisFazCoisas
@OLuisFazCoisas 7 лет назад
Clever solution. Thanks for sharing. I guess I will try a similar setup. By the way, how many amps does your powerbank have and for how long (more a less) can you use the controller with one charge? I'm guess I will try a "cleaner" solution and fit everything inside the controller. I hope there's enough space inside.

The thing I didn't understand completely is how a MIDI controller thats made for music, can control Lightroom. Any MIDI controller can do that? or just this one?
@themaximalistpodcast674
@themaximalistpodcast674 7 лет назад
This is probably late, but yes, technically any MIDI controller that you can get to interface withthe computer will work; that said, encoder knobs and motorized sliders will work best since they will be able to keep relative position of settings from photo to photo.

quick question. Can you assign the HSL panels to a button, and the HSL colour sliders to the dials. ie, in layer B, the top right line of buttons assigned H, S L (the left most 3 buttons). So I click on the H assigned button and then use the encoders to change the colour slider via the encoder. I assume you can but haven't seen one set up that way (other than the pfixer ones).
@wigglesxjr
@wigglesxjr 7 лет назад
Greg Coltman good question, and in my estimation, I don't think you can do that unfortunately. You can assign H or S or L for a specific color to a dial, but I don't think there is a way to set it up as you're describing. Try asking/looking on the MIDI2LR github board though, maybe there's an answer there. Thanks for the view!

Regarding the Yamaha iPad software...not quite sure what that is, I"ve never needed it on OSX/MacOS. I did have to get the MIDI settings in the OS preference panels to see it as a midi device over Bluetooth, which is NOT going up to the Bluetooth icon in the upper right. Are you using this set up on a Mac or PC? I have no experience setting this up to work on anyting outside of a Mac unfortunately!
