India was ahead of China in 1980. China was full blown Marxist while India had a closed market economy. China completely adopted the free market while India persisted with protectionism. India needs to learn from China's experience with capitalism if it wants to compete with China.

The Japanese, a nation I admire did not have the moral high ground in the way they conducted the war in S. E. Asia , though you can argue that by the end nobody was acting morally. What the Japanese did in Nanking was morally indefensible and what the Americans did to the Japanrse by dropping two vicious atom bombs on the Japanese was also morally indefensible.

I find it heartening, after reading the comments: that the cooler heads outnumbered the hotheads. There is hope that reason and rationality will prevail. Here a few points that I hope will prove our discussion. 1. Why is India wasting its resources over the Tiber issue? Won't those resources be better employed on building its own economy and infrastructure? 2. Territorial claims. India has had no historical influence nor political relationship with Tibet. Neither does it have a strategic need to use Tibet as a strategic buffer for its borders. The Himalayas already serve that purpose. So why fight over a few pieces of rock and desert? 3. OTOH China has deep historical connection with Tibet, because it was part of the Silk Route going back all the way to the Han dynasty which was about 300 BC. India has no such influence. Throughout history Tibet was never really a 'State' in the conventional sense, but a bunch of kingdoms united by a common religion and a spiritual leader. 4. Tibet is is strategically very very important to China: - It provides a direct land route for invading armies. - it is the source of water for five great rivers, that probably sustained more than a third of humanity. Two of these rivers are vital for China's survival. 5. Both China and India were superpowers in the ancient world. Then they were humiliated, raped and pillage by the Western colonialist. Now that they are on the rise again: it makes sense for both of them to work together and pursue mutual progress, and also influence and bring progress to the rest of the world. ? It is totally irrational for India to salt with its previous oppressors, against a very advantageous potential ally! Is it because of its own insecurity, or has it fallen prey to Weston 'divide and conquer' ideas. 6. Culturally, China acknowledges it's historical and cultural links with India. The story "The Journey to the West", lives on in common literature. So too the fact that it was an Indian monk Bodhidharma that brought Buddhism to China. Every Chinese kid knows these facts. This could be a thread that would you like to do countries. Think of the economic benefits, of Chinese tourists making pilgrimages to the Buddhist sites in India, instead of going to Paris!

Very interesting and practical comments. India not only needs to work with China but also other Asian countries like Indonesia , Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam etc and Afghanistan and Iran. This will create a more balanced world. If mankind is to progress , the only way it can be done is through peace and stability. Peace and stability can only come about in an equal world. No big brother/ sister bullying the smaller brother or sister. Indian need to unite properly and respect one another once and for all.

if it is so then why your government tore many previous agreements. why your government doesn't talk like you are doing here on youtube? you are advising us to accept your superiority and do what you want us to do against western powers. how it is different from USA that wants us to do the same against you (China)? What's the guarantee that 1962 won't happen again? we have to keep backup options ready for that. if you want respect you must show it first. ask your government to talk to our government (Indian) same way as you are projecting here. do you think that can ever happen? diplomacy and urge of power don't give much weightage to cultural and historical facts. China is not any different than western nations. what is china doing in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh against India? Is that not divide and conquer ideas? you think Indians are stupid that we can't understand China, Russia, USA, and UK. projecting yourself like a holy monk lol. China is no saint. India must counter it to protect its interests. it was India who allowed China to become one of the permanent UNSC members because of the cultural and historical links that you talked about. and in return, you gave us 1962.

@Fantastic Tea hm okay it wasn't my main point it was the last point. my main point was that China can't be trusted. in 1950s India's perception was that Chin is a Buddhist country so it is not a threat to India. we didn't take any measures to counter china at that time. it was a total mistake as it was evident in 1962. but since then we have improved ourselves. China can't bully us anymore as one can see in Ladakh. the day china becomes as powerful as USA they will attack India. we must prepare for that. and if you have good relation with someone doesn't mean you can grab their land. what gave china rights to occupy Tibet? just because they had good relations with Tibet for thousands of years so they can now occupy their land and force Chinese culture on them?

It is questionable for Indian Gov't to believe it allies with US the same way China did in 1972. China repositioned itself and then opened up its economy in 1978 at the right moment when the US capitals started deindustrialization. No doubt China made a wise decision. Now India must carefully calculate for its own interest what US can offer today other than lip services and what might end up losing by antagonizing China.

Once hopefully Indian political elite have raised the all round life of the people who are mostly very poor, that this attention towards China, will fade. But just because the poverty at the billion level is not fading, that slogans, like China believes this or that, "brand India", repeating the quad propaganda and on and on have to be made into thick padded veneers for the true story of extreme poverty. There is a sense of needless inferiority complex in the Indian political elite, and their intelligentsia and media mouth pieces, when it comes to China and they keep on using terms like "equal", "unequal", "looking down the nose" , mimicking Chinese words imagined or otherwise, to mean the inferiority of the Indians and so on. This is precisely because of the stark fact of abject poverty of crores of Indians and its representations in distorted and contorted forms. And then there is a counter balance in needless superiority complex towards Pakistan. Needless because there is no point in trying to feel superior over realities worse than or at the most, more or less like India. A large country like India has to come out from the usage of comparative words and terms that make this big country of historical fame, seem still yoked to the colonial preaching of Indians as inferior, and the reactions to it as superior.

Good insight into the issue from a diplomatic point ! It is for the political leadership of PM Modi to devise a cunning and calculating strategy to deal with China. India needs to engage with China (deeply eventually)because that country has the knowhow and resources to modernize India's pathetic and crumbling infrastructure dating back to British colonial days!! The Europeans and the rest of the west are already engaged with China and the other Asian giants!

Chinese have good impression of Indian before the border clash in the 50 and 60s. History show to the Chinese that India is the place to learn about true Buddhism. Many generation of Chinese scholars since the inception of china nation until Song dynasty travel to India to opening up to true teaching of that religion. All these reverse when Nehru took the easy way out to grab border land when china was weakened by the British and other western aggressors. Today indian politicians harp on China threat narrative propagated by again, the western racists in politics and their media, disregarding the facts that China's southern border with smaller nations like Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, Myanmar, Pakistan, Bangladesh live in peace and some have been neighbors without losing an inch of territory by

As a Chinese, I give my comments. 1.There is barely no connection between China and India in British-India era, cold war era, as well as today. Just imagine a stranger passed by when walking on a street, are you going to evaluate if you are equal to him or not?? No, NO AT ALL because no need to between two strangers. 2.Playing Tibet or Dalai Lama card is a new wishful thinking of India. Now Tibet has GDP per capita more than 3 times of India, let alone the slave master's refugees. China performs flexible negotiation without breaking our baseline. While India or Dalai Lama wants to break it. So, no need to negotiate at all. In addition, Dalai Lama has been 86 years old, after he passes away, China will not accept his refugees. and there may be a new one certificated by China central gov. 3.Since 1980s, China never has military cost/GDP more than 2%, while never below 2% of India. It is a big burden for developing economy. Keeping the border tension on is a good news for China, as well as Indian army, because India would never use military budget to boost economy. 4.At the early stage of 1950s, China stress the position of India not only because of diplomacy policy, but also for India's economy which is better than China. But after China complete the first 5 year plan and many industry index surpass India, China realize that India gov or Nehru can do almost nothing but simply keep what inherited from British-India. From that time on, it is clearly that China will first surpass India first and gap on and on inevitably. So, it is since later 1950s to depict the trend between China and India today, rather than 1980s by many Indian experts. Finally, China would not build a global coalition to against India because there is no need to fight against a stranger at all.

When world-class diplomats are busy improving trade relations with other countries, including China, to buy all the geopolitical leverage points, India focuses on the border issues and political quarrels with China as the central issue. There will be no war between two nuclear states because there is no winner, only loser and loser in a nuclear war. Our diplomats should know that geopolitics is the superstructure of economics. Therefore, if we don't grow our economy, build our domestic market, train our laborers well to attract foreign investments, we don't have any geopolitical leverage against China, especially given the sheer size of China's comprehensive national power, which is seven times compared to India. Hence, we should freeze all the issues against China for now and focus on growing our economy rapidly. China-US rivalry presents us the best moment for India to play an independent actor where both US and China are ready to offer us a better deal if we show diplomatic cunningness.

Very interesting! The inability to grasp the seriousness of the overtly expressed Chinese claim on Tibet..to convey that effectively to the then Indian leadership, forget blocking it, is a continued Indian failing. Can't recall over 40 years of spectacular Chinese build-up, anyone who analyzed its implications and blew a compelling whistle to alert all Indians to the threat. Even today the leadership is lax in galvanizing and leading an all-of-India approach to meet the Chinese threat.

It's about time Indian diplomats wrote more and more about the Chinese Communist Party. He was very coy about how to negotiate with the Chinese. Here are a few things to remember when negotiating with them based on my observation as a layman. 1. Never glorify them by calling them Chinese. They are the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). By giving them a national identity, we empower them more than they need to be. CCP has only 95 million members, while they control a nation of 1.4 billion people with brute force. 2. CCP are bullies and they only understand one language, the language of force. 3. Never confuse their temporary retreat for permanent retreat. They will never permanently go back, they will wait you out if you don't have patience. 4. They are masters of psychological warfare, at least that's what they want you to believe. Don't confuse their bravado for actual strength. 5. It's about time India played offense against them on cyber, drone, AI, and other emerging technologies. Otherwise in 10 years, they will be emboldened to engage in misadventures. 6. Always be on your guard. CCP thugs can never be trusted.
