What does it mean to be a black belt in a martial art? When a student plans for their black belt test, it is common for the instructors to require the student to write about this question, and to present the work as part of the test.
It is an important exercise and should be taken seriously. This is because we often do not fully understand what something represents until we have taken the time to fully put our thoughts about the thing into words. And when someone asks us, "What is it like to be a Black Belt," in an art, we will have a well put together answer.
This video essay was one of my own from my BB test, modified slightly for this online audience. I encourage you to take inspiration from it and find your own words when writing your black belt essays.
