Sandals and shoes are not insult. Again, since early times, we have customs which helped us keep diseases at bay. By removing the sandals, you are making sure that you do not bring any diseases ( as you walk on a lot of muck on a road ), inside the home. You wash your feet, hands, to make sure that if you have touched anything which might have communicative diseases, the germs might infect others inside the home as well. These customs are not rules. These are deeply rooted in science. Temples are places where a lot of people gather. Thus, you should go to the temple bare footed, wash your feet and hands and take the "prasadam" ( to boost your immunity ), with your right hand ( guess why ).

We are a country with ample sunlight all through the year and drying your clothes in sunlight is the best way to disinfect your clothes and prevent them from growing fungus on them hence we wash clothes in the morning. Majority of traditions and rituals and beliefs and superstitions in our country have originated out of deeply thought well tempered Vedic culture. Good though that you are trying to decipher the rationale behind everything and not criticise everything that is Indian as trash like many other foreigners . Your sincerity for India is conspicuous.

There is a scientific reason for everything we did like leaving shoes outside, cutting nails inside home etc..which our fore fathers followed and they were brilliant. But they knew future generations don't follow them if we put scientific reason they termed them in different way saying those are bad things. I started to realise lately why everything is followed that way and the reason behind it. They were way a head of us.

Eating Idly for breakfast is a mainly South Indian tradition. The place where I grew up in India, we mainly ate bread and butter with Chai for breakfast. Same for the state where I went to university. There, the most ate bread butter for breakfast while the non-vegetarians (as per indian definition), ate omelet and bread (of course with Chai). (This was several decades ago).

You can't Go to School or College in a Bikini even in Germany or America or Russia , Can You ??? Even though there are Freedom of Speech and Women's Freedom , Etc. Right ??? It's not always about race, sometimes it's just because people of white skin colour are almost always foreigners (except the northeast Indians) in India and many places in India don't attract international tourists. Some people get really excited when they meet a foreigner and behave inappropriately sometimes, once they get used to foreigners they stop acting strangely.

India is a continent in itself with different languages, dialects, customs, rituals, religions, different geography (desert, tropical, beaches, mountains, plains etc). As you know Indian civilization is the oldest civilization and Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) is the oldest religion, so once you start learning/reading about Hinduism, you will be able to connect all the dots whether it is related customs, way certain things are done, ayurveda, yoga, meditation, knowledge of vedas, Gita, Puranas, or spirituality (Karma, astral travel, reincarnation, five elements, past life)

Great video Jenni! I know about the nail cutting one and it's a personal thing if you believe in something which have might have had some logical reason in the older eras but are now just turned into superstition, I and most people I know don't follow that. The 'wash your clothes only in the morning' took me by surprise because I never heard of that one before, maybe it's a regional thing or maybe it's not a popular one haha.

13:14 leather (skin of a dead animal) is also thought to be a no no, this is another reason to wash feet because feet were touching leather and without washing going inside the house is thought to be unclean, shoes are thought to be dirty (this is why we wear shoes, feet not to get dirty), if people start getting into home or temple with wearing shoes, the floor will get dirty very soon.

Hi Jenni, I'm glad you brought up the topic of crossing the road in India but I wish you had elaborated a bit. As a foreigner of Indian origin, I would be scared of crossing the roads in India. What's the etiquette there, how do you know if an oncoming car will slow down for you or not while crossing?
@Gebieter
@Gebieter 3 года назад
It is not about slowing down in the first place. The traffic is way more and way more chaotic... but the general speed of the cars is lower than in other countries (As I was used to). You don't stop the flow... you are part of the flow itself. You just go from traffic line to trafic line whenever there is the next gap... you go your way and the cars go theirs without interrupting each other. And if the traffic is so dense that there are not enough gaps, there will form a small traffic jam and you just have to go around the stopped cars. Actually it is not that big of a deal. It is just another system that works its own way...

Very rational opinion. But Jani, with every visit you get more seasoned and that automatically changes the perspective for several things. I would petsonally advise that many practices in India are culturally driven with a logical reason to it. This reasoning is little hard for any foreigner to accept. This is a nation of 130 crores people with a very diversed yet people share seversl beliefs & practices sre commonly through length & breadth of the country.

I've seen same respect & photo requests which u mentioned in some distant russian villages. For them we're like brown curry 😆 or a different dimension of colour who r neither white nor black. 12:01 as per hindu i think so nail are part of body or any living thing should never cut or disturb even plants at evening or night because at this time they are at relaxing time. As per are holy book and science we believe in that
@isingcauseimliving
@isingcauseimliving 3 года назад
It was a time when science made these rules. People used to use earthen, oil lamps. But people passed them down as beliefs. Nails are to be cut during the day so that in case you drop them somewhere on the floor you can find them easily and that you do not accidently injure your sole of the feet by stepping on them. To add incentive, so that you do it the way it is advised, they would say that " Dont cut the nails during the evenings or you will lose money". Similarly washing the clothes during the day is a) good exercise b) good to dry clothes. Indians use a clothing line to hang the wet clothes, mostly in their balconies. The sunlight and the heat acts as a natural dryer. Also, white cotton clothes do not catch moisture when hung to dry during the daytime. However, if you put them to dry during the night time, they may catch the morning / night dew on them, rendering the cloth to be useless for wear. Also, before we became a growing economy, we only used to have a couple of pairs of clothes per person. Thus to make sure that you are able to wear the previous day's clothes, the day after, we used to make sure that the clothes are dry by the evening time.

The reason it was made that clothes should be washed in the morning coz, 1. There is sunlight during the day and sun dries the cloths. Where are during the night, there is no sun to dry up and lot of nocturnal animals hunt and it might accidentally drop it off on the cloths.
