Being and Nothingness, published in 1943, is a treatise by Jean Paul Sartre on human consciousness. Considered his magnum opus, this book explores the modes of our being, which are being-in-itself, being-for-itself and being-for-others.
Before human consciousness can arise, there is first the question of being, specifically the being-in-itself. This concept of being-in-itself, or in short, the in-itself, has a priority to the other modes or dimensions of our being-it precedes the other modes. The in-itself is as the name suggests, just what a being is, something in-itself. It is what it is. However, we are this in-itself but yet we are not just the in-itself. What makes us into something more, something that transcends the solidity and fixity of the in-itself of the present moment is our consciousness, or what he terms the for-itself. What is this ‘for-itself’?
