Being black at a PWI like UT has its benefits but also some serious downsides. I asked around campus about people's experience being apart of the 5% at the University of Texas. Special thanks to everyone who helped with this video!!

Wow, this is a really good video! I love how you gave voice to even those who are on the margins in the black community. We share similar experiences at Emory as it relates to blackness, queerness, transness, and womanhood

thank you so much for this video! so much good info. ut’s at the top of my list of universities but i was def concerned about how little the black population was represented. love seeing my people’s opinions on the topic ✊🏾

I'm currently a freshman at UT and i can totally relate to what some of these people said. In my opinion UT is pretty diverse compared to the other Texas schools I've visited in the past but there really aren't that many black people, especially in my classes. For example in my chem lab and bio discussion classes (which have 15-20 people grouped together from the larger main class) I am the ONLY black person there. And there are numerous occasions (to the point where it happens almost every other day) where people look at me like I just shouldn't be here. And there are definitely groups that don't allow black people or other minorities at all. This is a great school and I honestly wouldn't be at another school given the chance but there is definitely work to be done.

As an educated Black person, YOU will be the ONLY Black person in many settings. Stop focusing on your race or what you perceive others may be thinking about you. Have you graduated yet?

@@icecreamcake1457 no I haven’t, and for me it’s been like this since middle school so I’m not hung up about other’s thoughts. These are just things I notice and how I related to people in the video.

My mom wants me to go to UT Austin, but I knew it was a PWI so I was veryy uncomfortable with where she stood. She didnt go to school here so she really doesn't understand how that can effect you. But seeing this video is giving me a 50/50. I don't know how I feel at this exact moment, like it's sad that it's like this but if I go I'll know I have people to be around.

@@icecreamcake1457 I told my mom that if I get a scholarship to Austin then I’ll go but other than that not at allll. My top 3 (not in any order) is UH, UTSA, and UT Arlington

This breaks my heart. Even though I appear white, I'm actually half Mexican. I speak Spanish and English. I hope to transfer to UT Austin, but I hope if I meet you there, you wont feel that way. I appreciate your culture and your identity; i hope we can just enjoy each other instead of feeling out of place

why iam black i love UT when all my friends i grew up with were out selling drugs and just drving around hollering at females i was at home studying for my test i had coming up i earned my spot just like everyone else should i dint have a scholarship i did it with my brain saying no to peer presure and deciding my future not just pointing fingers and blaming another race for my life and what became of it. i had family member get involved with gangs get shot and the reason i didnt get shot or get in a gang was because i chose not too i chose to go home and get my home work taken care of because i knew that if i tried my hardest i could achieve whatever i put my mind too

Well the cross section interviewed were social aberrations: black, gay, trans, pansexual etc. Meaning it’s hard enough fitting in when you’re conventional without adding to it. Of course you’ll have problems fitting in when you’re such an anomaly. A better social sample size would be to interview heterosexual blacks in UT. You need a better sample of the black population to get your answers.

Hello!Could you tell me the names of sororities at Ut that are welcoming of black people?thanks
@LynetteAdkins
@LynetteAdkins 5 лет назад
There's black sororities on campus, the IFC sororities are all predominately white with maybe a handful of black girls in each. Spirit groups are the most diverse and give a similar feel to sororities!

How do you get into UT if you're out of state? Would a 27 ACT be good enough?
@LynetteAdkins
@LynetteAdkins 6 лет назад
I wouldn't be able to tell you tbh, a lot of other factors go into the decision like your GPA, extracurrics, etc.
@LynetteAdkins

There's sooo many factors that go into it but they definitely look at gpa the heaviest!
