I love this! I’m thinking about teaching in Alaska but I need to be in a modern city with amenities, heat and water. I heard teachers make good salaries in Anchorage. Are you able to fly to other states frequently? Like for example, if I want to travel back to South Carolina, would I have issues booking flights during the holidays?

I hate that it's true, but thank you for representing our people in such a positive manner. I'm more referring to the very real possibility of your video being a viewer's first introduction to our culture with none of the stereotypes that seem to make it even more difficult to cease the opportunity of closing the "gap" between us... Your delivery was great! I feel confident saying that if a person was on the fence about visiting or moving to Alaska and somehow stumbled upon your video, you probably helped them breathe and look forward to going! Hey, I just starting watching your videos and this is the first one I came across. Great video with very well made points. Given what you've mentioned about Anchorage, have you met fellow Black Alaskans who come from other African immigrant and also Afro-diasporic ethnicities or nationalities such as Jamaicans, Black Canadians (especially Black Nova Scotians, Louisiana Creoles, Nigerians, Afro-Guyanese, etc ) on addition to African Americans? Also, have you ever explored any of the Alaskan Native cultures such as Tlingit, Athabaskan, etc. ?

@@RoyaltyAC Wasilla is a beautiful place. Most people in Wasilla are Conservative and value conservative ideologies. Yea, there are lots of people with guns, but crime is pretty low. There are black people in Wasilla and are a very productive and respectful as well as hard working as most people in the valley are. I will say one thing, that people in the valley aka Wasilla/Palmer/Big Lake etc. do not take kindly on the ghetto trash attitude and laziness. There are gangs in Alaska but that culture and mind set is absolutely NOT accepted in Wasilla. If you are a black person and is respectful and hard working then you will get along just fine with all the other hard working and respectful people. But if you have strong leftist ideology then please don’t bother going because the mindset is very much frowned upon. That type of behavior is more accepted in Anchorage.

@JohnDoe-zg6fn
@JohnDoe-zg6fn Год назад
@Happy Girl Alaska Well, most of those junkyards are just that, junkyards. They sell scraps and metal and wood, and other odd items that are difficult to get in Alaska. They are mostly businesses. There are junkyards that are in every state and everywhere in the world. Now, this isn't to say that they all are. There are some white trash druggies that live in horrible conditions, most of which are dry cabins that have no electricity or running water. People know who the junkyards are, and the white trash druggies are, please do not equate them as all the same. The druggies and the filth that live in Wasilla also live in every major city in this country and they are not accepted in Alaska and tend to stay in remote areas and away from the major population and are NOT accepted in that community. Seeing as you have never spent any real time in Wasilla or the Valley, you wouldn't know these things, and that's ok. I lived in Wasilla, Palmer, Big Lake, and Anchorage for over a decade and was very active in the community, so I could speak on these things a little more accurately than you can. Love the videos and keep up the good work! 😊

My dear black sister Greetings in these difficult times. I am born german and my wife is Alaskan Native she is from the tribe of the Yupik It took her mother 3 years to trust, love, and physically embrace me...... The mother of my wife -when she was 5- had been literally kidnapped and incarcerated in faraway boarding schools like thousands of other native children..... and raped.......!! She was returned to her village at the age of 12!! It was she that taught me about Aleyaska as the Natives say....... She opened my eyes... She opened my eyes to Alaska and the world and what my people had been doing all over the planet......!! The Russians invaded Alaska and took whatever they liked from the Natives! This took place shortly after 1741, when a Russian expedition led by Danish navigator Vitus Bering sighted the Alaskan mainland. Amongst the information gained by this expedition was news of an unparallel fur!! The fur of the Alaskan sea otter.... even by Russian standards it was extraordinary in its properties and therefore extremely valuable!! Sponsored by the feuding, decadent, greedy European/Russian nobles, spurred by wealth through Alaskan sea otter fur military cosak units and fanatic Jesuits came across the Bering Strait exploited, rapped and killed! They were hated by the Natives!! To this day the word cosak is an insult!! Frequently killed and repelled actually in hardly known battles!! The cosak forced the Natives to hunt for the sea otter until they were exterminated..... at the time a winter fur of a sea otter was worth gold in Moskau and St Petersburg....... The cosak would shoot through belly-to-back lined-up natives if they refused to hunt or work for them..... unpaid of course!! The cosak and most Jesuits literally took off when the Otters were wiped out!! It's the old story..... the Europeans came and rapped the land and its people!! After that the Americans bought Alaska from the Russians in 1867 for a pittance without a word or dollar exchanged with Native Alaskans and ruled with an iron hand! Well into the 50 Natives were not to enter saloons, restaurants, washhouses, bathrooms..... all was whites-only!! JUST GOOGLE WHITES ONLY SIGN IN ALASKA Ironically the rape of Alaskan Native children in Alaska by priests/Jesuits returned........ through expelled priests from California Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oregon Grand Pass! Just google 2007 class-action suit Alaska raped native children catholic church When a large coal deposit was discovered in Sutton /Buffalo mine/ the Chickaloon people were driven off by the threat of artificial smallpox infection. It was planned to give them blankets saturated with the virus!! Luckily they were tipped off........... They packed up, disappeared like a shadow in the night, and walked over the mountains to the Kenai valley.... an alpinist feat unparalleled by people in similar mixed age groups. When the oil was discovered in Prudhoe bay the natives were tricked to sell the area cheap without knowing about the oil then the pipeline was built across Alaska, across native land without permission!! A crime reeking of white arrogance and disrespect!! Except for one man....Stewart Udall This congressman who had served in Arizona and worked closely with the Native Tribes there, imposed the Land Freeze Act in 1966 thereby stopping the local and federal government and oil magnates in their tracks!! This whole issue was prosecuted/negotiated and led to a complex settlement in Washington called the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. With all the billions if not trillions on the horizon the hill moved rather quickly.....lol All 12 Alaskan Native tribes received their territory and compensation for future oil revenue trillions, free medical care, and a corporate form with special financial privileges....soon to be exploited by war contractors that partnered purely on paper with the native corporations to receive preferential bidding/defense contracts for the wars in Irak, Afghanistan, Lybia, Syria and now Ukraine. The corporate form of the Alaskan tribes the Alaskan Native corporation became a money train for the us arms industry and contractors/generals and politicians and it also opened the door to basically turn native people into tenants on their own lands!! Sadly.... with the arrival of oil......or rather the oil industry and their kin...... somehow many Afro American businesses and black culture disappeared..... in the following decades Alaska became the state in the union with the highest rates of violence and rape......against women and children!! Native Alaskans are a minority in Alaska but almost a majority in jails!! Their socio-economic situation manipulated into poverty and bondage alcoholism drug abuse suicide crime murder violence is all one big mess destroying a culture and people that came across Beringia eons ago and then successfully populated North America, South America and Greenland The true first travelers of the northwest passage NOT BY CONQUEST BUT BY THE UNSTOPPABLE WILL TO EXPLORE AND LIVE FREE!! What is going on to this day is modern colonialism and racism at its worse....it is in plain sight but hidden!! As for amazing Afro Americans Ask who and how and under what duress the Alaskan HWY was built and who to this day got no credit for it!! Afro-American Soldiers from the south!!

Not going to say race wasn’t a factor, but most of the time when I’ve heard people say others are “so well spoken,” it’s because they are much younger than them and talked like an adult instead of talking like the popular lingo of younger generations. My wife is white and 7 years younger than me and I told her the same thing when I met her, it wasn’t a diss , I was just surprised by her age and the way she looked to seem so mature.

I'm sure people's intentions are meant for a statement like that to be taken as a compliment, but it doesn't come across that way.
@orlaspring363
@orlaspring363 2 года назад
@NolanDavis, I see your point but the same standard doesn't apply. Saying that to a white person is fine. When a person of color hears, "You're so well spoken" or anything to that effect, it often comes with the unsaid meaning, "You speak well compared to other people of your race/ethnicity." Even if that isn't what's meant, too often it has been---so it's not a compliment.
@LifeAfter50withTerree
@LifeAfter50withTerree 2 года назад
@@orlaspring363 Exactly! Even his personal example says he was “surprised “ by his wife’s fluency and maturity for her age. So in other words, people are surprised when they hear non-white people speak well. It’s not a compliment. But like I said, say it back to them and watch their response. Very telling….

Just respect the wild life. Don’t try to pet them lol they are NOT friendly. If you ever go hiking in the woods always take protection with you. Some people like bear spray but I personally never go into the woods without a firearm. I have hunted and hiked all over Alaska and have never had any negative run ins with the wild life. But you will definitely come across them.

There are racist everywhere no matter where you go, but you can not let that hinder you from enjoying your life. I lived in Alaska for many many years and I am Mexican. There have been some parts in Alaska that people looked at me different or treated me differently then they would my white wife, but those were few and far between. Most people in Alaska are very accepting of race. One thing that is not accepting is the gang banging lazy attitude that some people have. Alaska for the most part is a very conservative state. Anchorage is a little more left leaning. But most of state is very conservative.

@JohnDoe-zg6fn 2 года назад
It’s everywhere. Alaska is no where near as bad as others places I have lived. As a Mexican man I have had a few issues come up but so few and far between you don’t even notice nor remember it. Most people in Alaska are very accepting. Also you need to remember that Alaska is a very diverse state. There are lots of Asians, Pacific Islanders, Hispanic, Native Americans, black, and lots of Russian and Ukrainian communities.
