It may have been a necessary measure at the time, but as someone living 150 years later, I would have liked to keep the castles of the time and enjoy the history.

Meiji era was a very interesting time, probably the most fascinating Japanese period for me. It's a shame that so many castles had to be destroyed to help bring about change though.
