Homelessness Myth vs reality
1. Getting a job can fix being homeless
Not only is it hard to get a job because of clean clothes, showers, transportation, or a permanent address and phone, or because of disabilities, but entry level jobs don't pay enough to get back on feet.
2. Homeless people are lazy.
I don't say that being homeless is hard but it takes a lot of work. Youre cold, wet, and sick sometimes and just mentally exhausted. Its not easy. Alot of times you have to walk many miles to get to a food bank or to get clothes and lug around all the things you value.
3. We have a system for helping the homeless.
We really don't, at least not a system that works with any kind of semblance of sanity or order. While there are food and clothing pantries from private groups subsidized by the government, in order to get housing assistance there is such a long waiting list as to make it near impossible to get on your feet.
4. If homeless people wanted to, they could pull themselves out of being homeless.
Imagine trying to get a job when you have no address, no phone number, no shower and no clean clothes. Often, things like mental illness, physical and emotional health hinder progress even more.
5. Providing money and food only enables people to remain homeless
As if by receiving money,a hot meal or anything else gives us an excuse not to do anything for ourselves is stupid. What makes others believe we just want to stay homeless. We buy things we need and when we can something that makes us feel just a little bit better.
6. Homeless are addicts, criminals or mentally ill
Though there are higher ratios of addiction and the mentally ill in homeless, they are a mirror of commmunity.
7. Giving money to the homeless will just be spent on drugs and alcohol.
Some will just like anyone. And to be fair, while living the homeless life, you take any escape you can when you can but most homeless I know spend money on this gs you can't get at a pantry like
Socks and underwear.
8. Will never happen to me
1 to 2 paychecks. Disabilities, no friends no family, hospital stay. Shit happens
9. People choose to be homeless
For me choice is a relative term. Did I choose to be homeless. Of the choices available to me amidst financial and mental issues I don't feel like there was a choice at all
