Cheers to CA for giving me early access to Total War: Rome Remastered. Honestly I really really love that they're remastering the old games, I pray they'll do Medieval 2 next.
I did seriously enjoy my first serious experience with Rome, but I learnt a lot. These older games were not forgiving. Next time, less rolling armies of awful peasants dying by the thousands, more actual skilled armies built. And pray to avoid crashes.

For those wondering; there's is a tactic in all total war games that is endlessly effective called "out ranging": if you have at least 1 unit that out ranges all of the AI units(that haven't routed/died) they will act like they are attacking you and close the distance, unless it is a siege.

It was in Brisingr rather than Eragon, but I think I know which scene you mean. The battalion Roran is in (or whatever the right term would be) is trapped by the painless men in a village, and he has the archers stand on the rooftops while the sword- and spear-men take up defensive positions. IIRC Roran gets something like 250 kills with his hammer. The scenes with Roran were always the best bits, since he was a much more interesting character than Eragon.

Roran's storyline wasn't just brutal, it was the best. He went from a kid who's dad was killed by inhuman assassins, to small time rebel, to wilderness guide, to stealing the biggest, baddest ship in the Empire, to ship captain, to freedom fighter, to all around badass and leader of men. Plus, he did all of that with absolutely no magic of his own. AND he's the only one of the three (Eragon, Roran, and Murtagh) who got to settle down with his sweetheart.

I remember having to keep up with the tech race. The actors on the map would start showing up with advanced units able to kick down your old field army.

Fun tip, you can fast forward movement in general by pressing Space in the original RTW, same with Med2. Not sure it's in RTW Remaster, but I wouldn't see any reason to remove it

I would give my left kidney for Rimmy to play Rome Barbarian Invasion, if you thought the barbarians are scary now just wait you've seen nothing yet....
