In little over a decade, since its founding, the Tao Dance Theatre has staged performances in more than 40 countries, to widespread acclaim. It was the first Chinese modern dance troupe ever to perform at the Lincoln Center Festival and Edinburgh International Festival. The troupe’s founder and creative director, Tao Ye, is today one of the most influential choreographers in China.
To the founder and creative director of the Tao Dance Theatre, Tao Ye, modern dance began in the West but belongs to humankind. In his understanding, modern dance means the movement in the moment, and everyone owns their body in the moment they are moving. Therefore, “Modern dance belongs to everyone.”
