Seems like a lifetime ago, seems like yesterday. Moving across lines real and imagined, witnessing how we asa people have carved the earth and how it has in turn carved us.
This footage was taken on a trip to Beirut, Lebanon with my good friend Emilie Serri. I was working as director of photography on the project for a couple of years, and in 2019 we flew to Beirut, with the purpose of driving to or through the Syrian border. Her film was recently finished and had its world premiere at the Rotterdam film festival.
The film is titled Damascus Dreams, and you may see the teaser here:
• DAMASCUS DREAMS / OFFI...
It is a cliché to say, but I learned a lot on that trip, especially about how we construct images and fantasies about places that we do not know, and how these pictures are further distorted by the media.
Having been born in Mexico, I am all too familiar with a country that is painted as an almost lawless territory , where death and crime lurk around every corner. And while a certain aspect of this may be somewhat true, the overwhelming reality of the country and the people are quite different from that.
Going to the most ‘dangerous’ areas of Beirut, our small team was always welcomed with kindness, being invited in for coffee several times by Syrian refugees and other inhabitants of the Karantina neighbourhood. Our worries and fear soon faded, however it is important to acknowledge the great injustices that have befallen enormous amounts of people.
What I enjoyed most about Beirut was the quick wit and glorious sense of humour of the people. Ok, so I am generalizing from the few people I personally met there (but also from several that I already knew in Montreal), but I found this very much to resonate with the spirit of the place, from the architecture of Beirut to the beautiful landscapes in the surrounding mountains. Obviously there is much more to say and this is only a fragment of my recollections and personal point of view.
I hope you enjoy the view, even though it is partially obstructed.
