Looks great, people busy, going to work, shopping of just enjoying the sunshine. Not like today, Belfast city council should be ashamed of themselves. The city centre is the pits. Rubbish, filthy and a mixture of concrete, bitumen, asphalt, brick to repair the Royal Avenue. This is typical of Stormont. Detroit looks better. Its a great video and thanks for sharing.

was that Harry White at Shaftesbury Sq on the crossing? he was the only cop i ever saw surrounded by presents at Christmas! I worked in the old BCED(belfast corporation electricity dept) with a nephew of his and we used one of their vans to collect them.They were always distributed among the needy. A real gentleman. Love the site Belfast Jack, so many memories. Thankyou

Philip McF; No, that wasn't Harry; Harry was based at Donegall Pass station which covered Shaftesbury Sq. The City Hall "Beat" was covered by Musgrave St Station. I used to do the same job At Inglis' Bakery, N'ards Rd, and at Ballyhackamore (by Paddy Lamb's pub). At Inglis', you stood in the middle of four lanes; passing buses were on inches away, so it could be a scary points duty for the inexperienced. One of my colleagues who did that point used to spend most of his time shouting and cursing at careless drivers, but he still managed to keep everything moving freely!

No, Harry White did the traffic point at Shaftesbury Square only. The Policeman in the clip was from Queens Strret or Musgrave Street. Name unknown.

That's one way of looking at it. Another is to suggest you had to conform to strict rules of society, which didn't allow people to express themselves through, and experiment with fashion. Afterall. What constitutes being dressed properly and who is anyone to impose their style on others?

Oh what memories, beliesha beacons on zebra crossings and P eelers on points duty. Those where the days when you knew your local peeler and felt confident that he was keeping an eye out for the bad guys. These days you phone your local station to report a crime and the ask what would you like us to do about, or tell you the one and only car is out of the district. You couldn't drag them out of the station with a team of wild horses. God help us!

Fact today if a victim of major criminality Police deny you a legal right to make a statement Oil stolen x3 times when i worked in london when back home i caught the guy in the act cleaning up the oil trail across his grass with fairy liquid i just had tank filled 2 weeks prior police came out to my house and shouted real loud do you want to fall out with next door neighbour HELL NO I WANT TO PAY THEIR WAY IN LIFE THEY SHRUGGED THEIR SHOULDERS AND WALKED OFF THEIR HANDS IN LEPELS THEY KNEW THE NEIGHBOUR FROM PARTIES I LATER FOUND OUT. They Stole £800 From My Wallet £350.000.00 Property fraud and they have turned tables on me Making me out to be a criminal fabricating court documents and the magistrates allow these people away with this Direlection of duty

Before Sinn Fein & the IRA blew it to bits what a hell of a different place it was
@fcb9950
@fcb9950 5 лет назад
Yes indeed it certainly was a hell of a different place when unionists ran it like it was their own private club. Thank God the bigotted control of the council and the sectarian practices that these calm serene images hide are well gone. Note the sectarian traffic Cop/B Special. Different times indeed. Thankfully the Orange State is long gone.

@@fcb9950 There's always one bigot that likes to claim everybody else is a bigot. It matters not which politicians are in power, they will all do things their way, whether they're Loyalist, Nationalist or whatever. At least Belfast at that time was like any other city N,S,E or W. peaceful, friendly and generally happy while still suffering the aftermath of war - just as they were in GB. Your hatred shows in your snide snd faulty reference to the points police officer; he was not, as you say, a B-Special, but a Regular Police Officer whom I knew. But your type just likes to stir things up with your poisonous propaganda. At that time, ALL POLICE- Regulars and Specials - wore the same high-collar tunic which didn't change until a few years later, so without their collar numbers it was impossible to tell who was/was not a Special, so don't run away with the idea that you know better! As I said, I knew this officer Get a life and try enjoying it instead of promoting your own brand of bigotry.

@@charlieindigo it's difficult to comprehend how someone who highlights sectarian bigotry can actually be referenced as one. If you read it carefully there is no reference to everyone being regarded as bigoted at all. Specific reference is to the councils and law enforcement officials. Moreover I've referred to the traffic officer as a cop/B Special so your focus on me referring to him specifically as a B Special suggests a little ember of bigotry and stereotyping on your part. Your grappling with constume design is as purile as your reference to knowing him is an irrelevance. Either way the entire organisation whether you refer to them as 'regulars' or 'specials' where one of the most sectarian and biggoted organisations ever assembled backed up by politicians elected through gerrymandering and discrimination and there isn't a respected academic or historian who will disagree with my 'poisonous propaganda'. Anyone who defends the indefensible must be complicit so I'm afraid the bigotry is closer to home. Given the video is in 1958 and you know the cop/B special as you say you must be up in years. Its hard to believe anyone can live so long and believe so much bull that everyone should just get along wuth their 'general happiness' because of the naieve acceptance that 'politicians do things their own way'. If I call out bigotry for what it is then call me one...for there should never be compromise between justice and injustice....ever.
@charlieindigo
@charlieindigo 5 лет назад
@@fcb9950 You are, of course, entitled to your very one-sided opinion, probably as result of some event or events that befell you. As for the officer, in your own words you painted him as "Sectarian," so with no foundation to your claim, you branded him as an enemy, just as you branded the entire government, officials and police - to your discredit, and then try to say you are not bigotted. Your sympathies are obviously in tune with many Republicans and their supporters who want a government made up purely of anti-Protestant, anti-Loyalist and clearly anti-British. It's rather funny that you made no mention of those politicians who, in your book, must be pure white angels with the same bias as you. I've worked with both Catholic and Protestant officers who never once showed any form of secretarianism. Personally, I've never been involved nor had membership of any political or secretarian organisation, but yes, I've seen secretarianism on all sides, but don't kid yourself that we're all the same. You hide behind some cleverly-diguised words, but your hatred shines through like a beacon. I don't know how old you are, and I don't much care, but I've lived through the bad times, and I daresay I'm a great deal older (and possibly wiser) than you will ever be. Try thinking along the lines of thinking "positively rather than hanging on to the negativity." If you want things to change for the better, get yourself elected, and see how good a politician you can be. On second thoughts, don't - you won't win many votes with your spiteful attitude.
