Dame Judi is a superstar. She goes on holiday to the same place as my extended family every year. When the teenage girls from our group came across her having a cup of tea on the terrace of the local restaurant, she was gracious enough to allow them to take a photo with her. How many actors of her age have superstar appeal for 13-15 year-olds? Not many I would think.

Just watched this film today at the Toronto International Film Festival. I'm always a sucker for a good coming-of-age story, but this one was by far one of the best I've seen. It's an artistic film that really immereses you in the perspective of the boy (outstanding performance by the young Jude Hill) as he struggles to navigate both conflict within his family and that of the early years of the Troubles. Kenneth Branagh was actually here for a talk-back afterwards and I could really feel that it was a very personal project for him, inspired by his own childhood experiences. The film also has a uniquely haunting soundtrack brilliantly balanced with bits of humour. The choice to present it in black and white was also an excellent move by Branagh. Outstanding performances all around, but Catriona Balfe's in particular stood out. Wanted to rewatch it as soon as I left the auditorium. Much more to dissect!
@brendanfisher
@brendanfisher 2 года назад
Can I ask about your background? Did you have a knowledge of Belfast and the Troubles before you saw this film? I'm keen to know how International audiences will respond to the accents, the storyline and the history of NI.
@tomding462
@tomding462 2 года назад
@@brendanfisher No, I didn't really know much about the Troubles prior to seeing the film. I still don't, but I knew vaguely that the conflict had religious and nationalistic motivations that were complex and dated back centuries ago. But for me the film was far from political in tone. For others who have lived through the Troubles, it might be a different experience watching it, but for me, the heart of the film was the personal and familial struggles at being uprooted from home. I myself was an immigrant as a child and really identified with those aspects of the story. It was also just very beautifully written and shot. I'm also just a really big fan of Sir Ken. But as a cinephile I do love learning about different cultures and periods through film. The audience at my screening was also really enthusiastic and responsive. I know some initial reviews from the US said there should have been subtitles because of the unintelligibility of the NI accent, but I used to dabble in acting and had practiced a bunch of different accents so the NI dialect wasn't a problem for me to understand. In fact I liked the authenticity it gave to the film.

One of the most moving and affecting films I’ve seen in a long time. I haven’t even stepped foot in Belfast but could relate so much to Buddy’s bond with his grandparents and the true meaning of home. I was a sobbing mess by the end! Thank you and bravo Kenneth Branaugh 👏🏼

Two of my favorite scenes in the movie: 1. Ma and Pa talking inside the bus, Caitríona Balfe did a stellar performance in that scene; 2. The whole scene with Pop saying to Buddy, "I'm your truth", that made me almost cry.

Can’t wait to watch this film in Belfast where I lived in 1969 a city I love I came from the country to Belfast in 1967 and fell in love with Belfast, the streets, the humour and most of the people, a city divided by conflict but never divided, I’m tears just watching the trailer what’s it going to be like when I put “me arse” (as they would say in Belfast) on a seat in a Belfast cinema.

I've tears in my eyes watching the trailer, I'm one of the children who had to leave her home in Belfast, because of "the cleansing" (Burning people out of their homes because of their religious beliefs, I'm a Catholic, now living in Dublin, STILL MISSING MY HOMETOWN, no matter how many times I go up the road home to Belfast, I know that I've always to leave my family behind, again, and, drive back down the road to Dublin 😭 I'll be 59 in May 2022, and, having to leave my family, home, and, even our wee dog behind us, still breaks my heart, we had to go to an Irish army camp in Cork for a year and a half, because, we were "classified" as REFUGEES..... REFUGEES IN OUR OWN COUNTRY, IRELAND 🇮🇪😭

Ironic that there is a line in the movie: If they can't understand you then they're not listening. Meanwhile critics are lambasting the movie for not having subtitles so they can understand the actors 🙄 sigh.

@@Selahsmum yup just Google Belfasf reviews and that is the main complaint, there are no subtitles to help people understand what the characters are saying. Thankfully, I can understand people just fine as well.

Slightly ironic of course that Wild Mountain Thyme, JDs last outing in an Irish tale, was lambasted for making Irish accents less Irish for an international audience. Seems John Patrick Stanley knew what American audiences were like after all.
@ButterflyAngel008
@ButterflyAngel008 2 года назад
@@lynnk-j9948 I would rather it be authentic and not try and please audiences that won't see this movie anyway.
@lynnk-j9948

@@ButterflyAngel008 Making movies is a business as well as entertainment. What a the point in making movies that ppl won't go and see because they can't understand what's being said? I have no trouble understanding most accents but understand some ppl find it difficult. Irish accents aren't the only accents toned down. Northern English and Scottish accents often made a little less difficult. Nobody wants to watch movies with subtitles. Its so distracting. There has to be a middle ground surely so everybody who wants to watch a movie can enjoy it?
