The Belfry of Ghent is a 95-meter high belfry tower in the center of the Belgian city of Ghent. The tower is the middle tower of the famous Ghent row of towers, together with the St. Nicholas Church and St. Bavo's Cathedral. The Ghent cloth hall is also located against the belfry.
Construction of the belfry probably started before 1313, the year from which the first accounts date. A design drawing kept in the STAM is by Jan van Haelst, master mason. In 1323, four floors (of the six planned) were already finished. A temporary wooden tower crown was built between 1377 and 1380. The legendary 'Dragon of Ghent' was then hoisted. The spire was repeatedly modified in the following centuries.
After several wooden spiers, the belfry was given a neo-Gothic cast-iron spire in 1851. Half a century later, however, the condition of the striker had become too bad, and with the 1913 World Exhibition in prospect, a competition was organized for a new striker. A proposal by Valentin Vaerwyck, based on the medieval spire, was approved. Because the work had to be done quickly, it turned out that there were many defects afterwards, including in the connection between the stone hull and the new stone bell house. Restoration work was therefore carried out in 1967 and 1980.
Since 1936 it has been protected as a monument. The Belfry of Ghent, together with the Cloth Hall and the Mammelokker, has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
