When I had horses they did not need to be shod since they were mostly pets and were not used for hard work. So I regularly just trimmed their hooves. One horse liked it so much he would actually lay down and place his hoof in my lap. Our donkey would fall asleep when I did his hooves, so I had to lean him against a wall. Funniest part was waking him up to turn him around and do the other side. He would promptly fall asleep again! His only flaw was that he hated goats.
Pleasure to watch when a professional works ,greetings from Ukraine, love your horses ,my dream to have at least one horse like your, God bless you guys
The sheer power of the beast, it's a miracle that Man has managed to tame them and that Farriers do this essential and exhausting work with such skill and patience both on the part of the horse and the farrier
Succes verder. Jos De Graaf. Docent Kunst- en Siersmeden.
One can save oneself much of the strain and also make it easier for the horse when one properly trains the horses to give their feet. Then brute strength is replaced by the willingness of the horse to cooperate. My horses ( 1050 and 1100 kg) are being shod without a shoeing stock, just cradles to place their feet in and they are relaxed. That being said, this farrier is good.
Yup, training them to pick up their hooves helps. I've cleaned hooves from shetland's to big draft horses of 19hh, all you need to do is properly train them or just lean into them a little bit. This method in the video actually makes it harder and it doesn't help that horses are claustrophobic either.
@@MaritsView You have apparently never SHOD draft horses have you??? Even when they stand well, they are extremely heavy and the work involved requires time, under that weight..I have done it with and without a stock and doing it without, will break you down,in half the time..
@@TightwadTodd I never said l shod them. I said l've cleaned their hooves countless of times. I know very well how heavy they are but there are other ways to do this.
@@MaritsView Exactly!!!...Why does someone who has never done it,think they know more about it than someone who makes a living doing it and probably for longer than they have been alive..Did you see these horses struggling in any way?..Did they look Stressed to you..Did you actually consider, that they are accustomed to a Stock and may actually like the stability of it...Gotta love the keyboard commando horse whisperers..
I’ve got a friend with a Belgian and I have to say, I’ve never seen the need to shoe a horse this way. I’ve got three horses myself and I’ve never seen anything like this before. It was interesting to watch.

It might be a bit easier if someone taught the horse to pick up his own feet. I've shod a lot of drafts. They all picked up their own feet simply by squeezing the tendons. Then they were taught to rest their feet on a hoof cradle so no stocks were needed.
I know their feet are heavy. I've shod many draft horses. I'm talking about teaching them to lift their feet up themselves so you can strap them to the stocks rather tha needing three people to pull the foot up.
@@feathersong5838 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-47CubmtDic0.html no stocks, using hoof stand no dramatic struggle of 2 or 3 guys picking up the hooves
I just love draft horses of all types. They are wonderful, big teddy bears! I'm no expert, but I couldn't help but wonder if there was an easier way to do this. However I can see the farrier is good. Has to be a lot of hard work.
I helped my father shoe his horses many times right out in the drive way or even the barn yard., the horse picked up their own feet when he grabbed the hair and gave it a tug.
When you take the horses shoe and heat it up very hot like that, are you actually fitting the shoe by virtue of melting the heal into a good fit so it doesn't hurt his feet over time?🧡🧡🧡🧡
guess im jst a bit in shocked yet still intrigued to learn something new...being around horses all my life, this type of horse in a stand farrier is different. I'm used to the blacksmith who picks up the horses hoof and holds it between the legs and does the work. have they ever tried without the stand?
@@feathersong5838 While yah, you could tie the horses feet up, but you could teach the horse to bring their foot up with a que so you’re not having to yank their foot up with the ropes
@@oliverjustvibing3173 because even a small twitch of the horse would send him flying. Once is ok, when it happens several times a week, he'd be in the hospital. How difficult is it to realize that?
@@Linda-hs1lk does that horse look like it’s in fight or flight mode? And y’know, that’s why I said to *teach* the horse, you’re not just gonna pick the horses feet up with your strength. Do you really think that just cuz you do one thing to upset a horse, they’re gonna bolt? Have you ever been around horses? This job could be so my easier if the owners taught a simple trick that takes a hour, maybe 2
Why not put rubber mats don the wood floor? Why isn’t there any padding on the iron? Why isn’t there paddling around the horses’ hooves for the rope to go?
Well lets see, he was put in a stock a chain used to keep him in, he had a horrible looking bridle on his face with blinkers. Last but not least he was practically being hog-tied to get his feet up so you could work on them. This is brute force, I think I would be upset.
