(4 Aug 2014) ROYALS AND DIGNITARIES ARRIVE FOR WORLD WAR ONE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde arrived at the Abbaye Saint-Laurent in Liege on Monday (4 AUGUST) for a day of events in Belgium commemorating the centenary of World War One.
The Belgian royals welcomed more than 50 foreign dignitaries who were attending a day of events including a memorial service and wreath laying.
Among them were the British royals, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and other dignitaries, including German President Joachim Gauck and Spain's King Felipe VI.
The events commemorate the German invasion of Belgium and the British declaration of war on 4 August, 1914, when the conflict erupted in full force.
Both sides believed the war would be over by Christmas.
