I had Mr Craig for AP econ/honors gov't my senior year of high school. I can almost guarantee that for 90-100% of the class, he was the best teacher we had through all of high school. In truth we didn't spend that much time discussing econ in class, there was a lot of lighthearted discussion, thoughtful movie watching, social experiments, and dog talk, but he always found a way to bring the subject back to critical thinking. It's been 16 years since I graduated, and I'm still incredibly proud to have been one of your students, Mr Craig.

Thank you again for your videos. Lots of tough topics that truly need to be openly talked about. My 2nd service dog was lab and white shepherd. I got him from the pound, the kill shelter, when he was 10 weeks old. He had Parvo. What a nightmare!!! That poor little guy pulled through, we home treated with the guidance of a good veterinarian. For over a week though, I wondered if we were going to loose him. He picked his name...towards the tail end of it we were outside, him going potty and I exclaimed, "What a Trooper!!" I was told he wouldn't live the full lifespan because he had been so ill as a puppy. At 15 1/2 years old I took him in and we did a fake picnic under the apple tree in the back yard of the vet he had gone too since he was a pup. His liver was shutting down and he could hardly walk because of hip dysplasia. I know I did the right thing. But, I had never had to do that before and it was so hard I asked my mom to fly in to help me. I sure miss that angel boy, he was an amazing dog.
Robert Cabral & Danny Craig share such similar philosophies, morals & ethics when it comes to dogs (and decency in general). I admire these two men so much!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Another excellent choice and interview. OMG I miss Schutzhund. I can now live vicariously through you and your guests. Thanks. I think owners and handlers should be licensed, not the dogs. Huge respect for going at your dog's best level and not your own. You are a true master and companion. If my dogs want to eat, they have to scent track it. In the house, park, yard, beach, hiking trails, ground and air scent. Sometimes the track is 10'. Sometimes it's 500' or more. But they track every single day.
It was such an amazing interview, Danny has a wonderful approach of competing, breeding and just simply having dogs. I love that you guys both take great care of your senior dogs, and only compete with them till they enjoy. Huge respect!

Great interview! I am slowly but surely watching all of them, Robert! I enjoyed the time you spent talking with Danny Craig. Insightful and helpful. I've been in a lengthy process of preparing myself for a really well-bred Working GSD pup coming this Spring. I'm digesting every little thing I can find on your channel. The conversation about Schutzhund clubs, decoys, training, tracking opened my eyes a little wider. I've had a lot of concerns about clubs locally, (not having a great experience with my last dog); but the information shared here has helped me to understand what path I need to follow if I want to pursue Schutzhund, with more knowledge how to find the right club for this puppy. Also, I believe that the next dog to come into the family will actually be a Mal after this GSD pup. (Not right away) I was pretty sure that I would not ever be a Mal owner until this interview. I thought I’d just watch it for a few minutes, but ended up hour and half! These two guys are just such good professionals in what they do, it’s so interesting to watch!
I own snakes as pets, some are quite dangerous. My dogs have learned to walk away anytime I’m working with a reptile. They literally walking into their kennels almost like they recognize the danger and can read the intensity in the room. This helped in the long run, now when we come across a snake on a hike they quickly move away.
Between 96 and 100 is "Zero". Great point. I want my dog to be the best he can be, the happiest he can be. But I don't need to push him past his abilities. Challenge is important, and he can do a lot, but I never want to push him to the point of damaging him.

I just did an experiment with my Malinois. She's living inside our house most of the time, but still has a "drive". I found a toy in my yard and put it in my pocket. Then I put a leash on her. Now sweetest dog in the world, would be world champion in heeling, following me on a leash, ... everything... just shows what the dog world is about :-) hilarious! PS I had Malinois since I was a child, they still surprise me all the time. But : listen to R. Cabral instead of me: living with these dogs is my second nature, I don't know what I'm doing wrong or right! Nobody taught me anything, in my region the Malinois is considered a "normal" dog to have (Belgium). So it's important that you listen to experts like Robert!!! Not to persons that have a "second nature" bc they lived with Mals since they wer 3y old...
Another GREAT interview, and different/new information than Robert's other "Sport Dog" Podcasts. At one point, Robert mentions his karate background, and asks Mr Craig if his athletic background helped him in his dog training & understanding, and Mr Craig goes on to say his experience as a teacher was most helpful. Funny thing: the way explains the importance of a KNOWLEDGEABLE DECOY made me think of my old karate sensei. I had no idea how a bad decoy can destroy a dog physically, literally through injury to the dog's spine & joints. My sensei taught me how to punch, kick & block properly to avoid injury. Very similar understanding skill set for a karate instructor & a sport decoy to avoid letting the "student" get injured. Mr Craig is so empathetic & smart. I hope he enjoys his time away with his family, but I hope he comes back into the "dog world", perhaps in another capacity with his psychology background, maybe as a behaviorist. He has so much to offer, I'd love to take a seminar or something with him. Thanks Robert for sharing this with us!!❤

A matured Canine doesn't require a million commands, treats and fur baby talk. Dogs are highly advanced creatures. We teach them childish mentality due to our inadequate approach to this intelligent hunter. We need to grow with them, like we grow with our children. We bred for looks over purpose, and sold for paper. Emotional development is the highest goal.
I have had gsd all of my life .from a boy when my dad brought a puppy home. many dogs in our family. but when I come close to a gsd no dog .after 7 of my friends will ever come closer. Big lover of my dogs❤

I'm getting ready to re-stream. I just wanted to underscore the importance of knowing this breed inside and out before acquiring/adopting one. An Army Ranger veteran is accustomed to leading troops and engaging in hand to hand, eye to eye, mortal combat. He retired and needs the assistance of a Service Dog. Without consulting anyone, he found the most costly and supposedly well-respected Malinois breeders in the region, and paid $$$$$.$$ for the beautiful brindle and black puppy. She flew through puppy kindergarten, basic obedience and training like a champ. Afterwards, he did not continue proper socialization. Very long story short: He is now *her* captive. She has bitten neighbors' dogs and worse- multiple people. His own child cannot come into his room if she has a nightmare without a severe guttural warning. He wanted to be able to take her everywhere, as prescribed. Sadly, it appears he can't take her anywhere without a nightmarish looking muzzle and a vest covered with more warning labels than a Brinks' armored truck. He bought a $2M liability policy. What he got was not the dog to suit his medical needs. He got a 90 lb. set of jaws that made them worse. @Robert Cabral has more than sufficiently warned followers about this beautiful breed's requirements. It can't be overstated. Police and Military work *or* high-level, world-class sport are best-suited for Malis. Point to ponder: Have you ever seen one in public, inconspicuously curled up, sleeping peacefully beside a wheelchair?
To do all that work with and for his dog's he must love his job he could definitely let other people do most of that work for him and at his age I'm definitely impressed with him if he was 20 years younger that would still be a impressive work load.definitly loves what he does not many people get to live doing what they have a true passion for and make a good life doing it I hope I get that lucky one day soon hopefully LoL good for him
First time I caught a malinois I jammed the crap out of him . There was big difference in speed between german shepherd and this malinois . I turn around to catch and it was over
Hi Robert, hope you can pass this message along for me to Danny for. me. Interestingly, scientists recommend breeding carriers of a diseases to non carriers embarkvet.com/breeders/resources/canine-genetics-for-dog-breeders/breeding-carrier-or-at-risk/ This is because the genetic COI of pedigree dogs us dangerously high. On average a pedigree dog will be 20% and a mutt will be 0%. I would agree it is dangerous in the sense you don't know what your pet owners will do. A common solution among breeders is to use the embark litter package (order it way before litter is whelped, it takes a while to get here). Test all puppies, and vasectomy / intact ovary spay the carrier's. On average, only 50% of the litter will be carriers. So cost of desexing 4 dogs + embark litter Vs keeping the progeny of an absolute beast of a dog.
Funny how Roberto acts like a Schutzhund expert yet doesn't even do the sport. That's like speaking about swimming in an authoritative voice without ever having jumped in a pool. LOL
Many breeds are more effective guardians than shepherds, Rottweilers, dobermans, and honestly today’s cane corso. The reason behind this is that those breeds are not selectively bred and selected for their fighting and guarding ability based on them being tested. What I mean by this is that these dogs are never bred based on performance in a true fighting scenario. Therefore it is impossible to distinguish which members of the breed could actually stop a man. Decoy work is the solution, however this is just a game to the dog, it is never hurt as it would in a real fight. The breeds I am going to mention are tested in ways that I find inhumane, however it does lead to them being bred for true ability. On to the breeds: Many of these breeds are breeds of fighting origin with the exception of the spanish mastiff. The breeds of fighting origin are the game pit bull, American bulldog, boerboel, tosa, presa canario, bully kutta. These dogs are much more powerful than shepherds because they are bred to be able to fight or hunt/ guard against powerful predators such as leopards, Jaguars, pumas, and even lions. It makes sense. One is bred for fighting the other is not, the one bred for fighting wins. Plain and simple. Fighting is barbaric and disgusting, but it does create the best fighters. When any shepherd is in a fight longer than 5 minutes (ie a serious attacker) it will become fearful and likely give up. However any of the breeds I mentioned earlier should be able to dispatch an attacker quickly, however should the fight last, they will be game, and not give up. You may be wondering how are these breeds tested as I mentioned earlier. The game pit bull is still widely fought illegally, the Tosa is fought as well in Japan, the boerboel is still employed as a property guardian in South Africa in some breeding lines and have been known to be able to kill leopards. The bully kutta is also still fought, the presa was a fighting dog, but now like the American bulldog is used in catchwork (ie catching hogs). Which is extremely impressive because these hogs are up to 400lbs and could easily kill a man. In short the breeds above would mop the floor with any so called “protection” breeds. But those breeds are better suited to military and police work because obedience is more important than physical ability in those fields.
