Bell Aircraft Corporation X-14A VSTOL Research Aircraft. This was a very successful NASA flight test program for VSTOL research. One example survives in the Ropkey Armour Museum in Indiana.
Is this the design that never crashed? Most of the old V.T.O.L. designs from that time ended up as wrecks I read somewhere. This one was used for years till it was worn out. Looks like the starting point for a flying car design to me.
Because if flying cars are developed from this, normal people would not only need years of training to get a pilot's license, they were need to take off from, fly through, and land in areas where the craft wouldn't pose a hazard to people, you can't expect a person to take off from a traffic jam in one of these without the extremely hot exhaust gases posing a risk to anyone or their cars.
