john a. powell & bell hooks: Dialogue at the Othering & Belonging Conference "Belonging Through Connection, Connecting Through Love: Oneself, the Other, and the Earth"
It’s astounding and inspiring and frightening to see/hear people who are almost free of defensiveness, who are this open. Look how simultaneously soft and powerful they are! Doesn’t this alone show us how fearful and tense we always are? Thank you, bell and John.
bell hooks is my hero. I remember, as a young woman in 80s London, lost in confusion as to the raciam I was living through, I came across bell hooks in a small bookstore in London. My world changed for ever, I now had a parameter that has never failed me. Ms Bell is fabulous
I love this- feel the same way- something opened up after encountering her work and refuses to be closed. After her passing - I am committed to rereading her work with a more in-depth examination and commitment to incorporating more of her wisdom. My heart is ready to handle the weight of HER calling. You are so appreciated Gloria Jean Watkins- you will continue to liberate countless men and women. Two women hear are celebrating your legacy. Much love and deepest gratitude 🙏🏽
“Our very presence here together is a form of activism.” That was a powerful statement to me, because the whole time watching the video, I was so glad to be watching a man like john talk like this with someone like bell hooks.
I am so happy you knew not to place your work in institutions that have paywalls. I am a librarian who BOLDLY told many (while in graduate school) that all learning institutions should freely share books, art, movies, and artifacts . Rest in Power bell hooks
Very much a yin and yang discussion. One was focused on suffering, violence, pain, and deprivation, while the other was focused on togetherness, community, hope, and promise.
I'm a woman building and working my hood to built my city up one house at times I work on roof in the dirty ground everyday winter i shovel old people home for safety i care and help others money is low but i see the love of care
Wow ... even after watching for just a few seconds I can see/feel that John Powell is such an open, compassionate and caring man. There's just this wonderful aura. And this is the first time I've seen him. I'm sure I'll enjoy the teaching today.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can offer me
@Zayn Francis I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
"Often in my lectures when I use the phrase “imperialist white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy” to describe our nation’s political system, audiences laugh. No one has ever explained why accurately naming this system is funny. The laughter is itself a weapon of patriarchal terrorism." - bell hooks (1952-2021) bell hooks (2004). “The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love”, p.29, Simon and Schuster
“Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them”- Gloria Steinemon on the literal results of a survey conducted.
I am involved with those who are returning to society after being incarcerated. Trauma has been a prominent experience in many of their childhoods. bell hooks recommended the memoir by Kevin Powell who had suffered childhood trauma, "The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boys Journey into Manhood."
Wow! What an incredible hour! Rest in Power, bell hooks. I will share this out to my Progressive friends- not liberals but Real Progressives who understand the fed govt can and should be doing things like ADOS Reparations, Landback, M4A, GND, a federal job guarantee, community investment... Love and Peace.
Oh, what an inspiring story about the man who raised money in honor of his daughter's death to open a women's center at her school. Thank you Bell for sharing that story...and for bringing up the need for clean water for ALL!!! Will look for that film "A Fierce Green Fire."
So many pearls of wisdom in this discussion! I will be watching it over and over as the deeper meanings continue to unfold. bell hooks, I thank you for the Light! May your spirit continue to soar, Queen. You are one of our honored ancestors now. I hear your voices! You cover us with love in the wind, the sky. The earth moves with your power and your love speaks healing power into our spirits. Amen. Asé. It is so now. 🙏🏿💕🙌🏾
Very grateful to continue finding great dialogues between great hearts and minds. First Nikki and Jimmy and now Bell and John. Excited to come across more! Please drop a comment if you know of more content that’s similar 🙏🏾
Yes the Nikki Jimmy dialogue was brilliant and electric and they were so young! The New School has several videos on RU-vid and it’s always to re-read and re-watch everything on the Delaney Sisters. Enjoy!
Bell Hooks you are my new super hero. ((hugs)) Im going to have to find out more about you. Im a student at ssu in southern Ohio, and I think your message and knowledge is something I can learn a lot more from.
I'm willing to watch a whole hour of this because I'm completing a social justice initiative and need to watch more videos about belonging in the community before making my own video or poem about that. So yes, community means that a person is comfortable in their environment, has interactions with others and feels a sense of security.
I belong to a small town , Bellingham Washington and transformation and white allies is my key to success as well as education. I was introduced to you by my white ally because of our similarity in beliefs. I hope we find each other soon.
There are a few of us here in Bellingham and we are all at the University and 3 black doctor families. I wish see that it's a small town but can you give me a little bit more?
So true been meditating with thitnathah the Buddhist from plum village so true watching anything of hate violence towards another doesn’t help you must teach not corrupt with more filth nice to know their are voices out their really doing changes to bring together I love all people every person and try continuously to learn from people every where I go.my children need to have that openness with them to learn from each open -heartedly and children learn from examples so how you show them they learn an be
wonderful video yet, after hearing the word "signer" I felt as if someone dropped a brick on my chest because they are not signers they are interpreters, they are part of the Deaf/ Deaf Blind/ hard of hearing community. They stand/ sit on stage and bring words to life via their ASL thus please refrain from calling them signers because they are professionals who break communication barriers. Cheers!!
Thanks for explaining. As, John Powell prefaced, there with be imperfection in the conference... And, by the way, ironically I couldn't get closed captions, which I need my aneuro typical processing
This left me with one question that now unfortunately she can never answer, How can I love someone who has hurt me without further exacerbating my wounds?
You can it's not easy easy nor impossible. I struggle myself it's called. Forgiveness! It doesn't mean condoning the wrong it means having Mercury, on them and yourself as being imperfect and human .
Forgiveness doesn't mean continuing to carry the hurt and pain. It means letting them go , and it go. Wishing them the best and staying away because as long as you stay in that space you will hurt . Janet Jackson said in a song you can let go the pain with out letting go of the memories the good ones.
It depends what you understand by loving...does that mean still continuing to act towards them in loving ways which benefit them and hurt you ? often when we love people like that and that love causes hurt or distress to ourselves then we have to ask ourselves why loving someone else comes at a such a cost to ourselves?
Don't get me wrong-hooks is a treasure, as is powell (and as are all people)-but I wonder if instead of merely naming white, patriarchal, heteronormative, rich people they focused on all people who oppress using race, supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy religion, etc., might it lend greater power and potential to their ostensible message of connection? Help me out. Is this a sort of historical catharsis in focusing on white, supremacist, capitalist patriarchy? I would also have preferred if they would have talked of equity across all intersectionalities and positionalities in their discussion.
We do not have the complete history of mankind. Until we know what actually took place from the beginning to the next and the next, it is impossible to know who did what to who, when, where, how long and what it led to, because hurting seems commonplace and too familiar.
I wonder why bell didn’t want to speak on why she didn’t capitalize her name 🤨 could it have anything to do with knowing your straw man and not being labeled as “dead at sea”
I like confidence but when an author repeats referencing THEIR literary canon as opposed to bringing in a world of other brilliant human rights and equity proponents it's a bit...
What is a feminist? Who are feminists? And why? And why would womanhood be questioned..as the title says, aren't they women? What is so hard about knowing the differences of men and women yet both complement the other as XY and XX in life science and logically it fits..Equally, 100% each... Valued.
So bell hooks intentionally didn't like capitalization of names because she saw capital letters as an unjustified supremacy/hierarchy. On top of that, bell hooks is her professional/stage name that she took on in honor of her grandmother. I don't know about the other person's name.
