few comments that are very important - #1 - NEVER turn these older projectors off all the way with the lamp being used! - you want to ALWAYS put it on motor and let the fan cool down the bulb - these bulbs are worth 3x what the projector is worth, so this will save them by doing so. if your Projector has a separate MOTOR only position, use that after you run your film for viewing... my rule of thumb is I usually like to run the motor for 1/3rd of however long the lamp was on... so a 3 inch reel as shown, you'd want the motor on for a good min or so since these run about 3 and 1/2 mins... #2 - your loop was a little too large - you see those two silver dots? those are where the film loops should be at - better to error on the side of a little too large though. #3 - leave the control in Still mode while turning off your motor - like a Car - you wouldn't start your car in 1st gear, right? you'd start it in Neutral or park, and then shift into D or R :-) - These older Bell and Howells were built like tanks! so my last words of wisdom - if you have film that has lots of splices - DO NOT use this unit! - these older units are built well, but if they hit a bad splice, the metal teeth with strip your film sprocket holes faster than you can shut it off, and the bulb will burn a hole in the film too, so avoid using the still feature! if you don't want melted film! this was 54-57 - by 59, they had the autoloads out - those are wonderful BUT again, every projector had it's pros and cons!
Oh gosh I watched it the rest of the way through and will give my pop's old projector again. Thank yo you so much for this. How wonderful it was to operate this thing myself and see Grandpa's and Dad's old home movies. I got to see my Great Grandparents and show my Son. Such a sweet memory to share with my Son.
Thanks for your video .We had one once upon a time and movie tape is use to break down cut I to peaces then again reapet the procedure but there was no audio that time. Now after decades I am serching those cameras.
Check the film to see if it had been slit evenly all the same width, if too wide it will get stuck in the gate and burn! I run it between my fingers and feel for wide parts. Scissors are used to trim with.
Makes me sad that I gave ours to Good Will. Wish I had kept it. I did keep our camera though. Dad used to have trouble setting it up each time. Thanks for the memories.
This is when B&H was still good. I’ve had nothing but problems with their later auto load projectors. I have a B&H manual load that’s still pretty good. Same goes for their Super 8 cameras. The battery op motors always seem to die while their older Filmo spring driven series cameras still keep chugging along and still shooting film over 60-90 years later.
I have a 357 B from childhood. On yours, does the take up reel lower for movie/forward mode and up for rewind mode? (Mine does). My film is really jittery and I do not know how to fix it and make it run smoothly. Am worried I will ruin the film, so am sitting here googling how to's ;)
Question: How did you get your voice so clear over the projector noise? I just bought essentially the same projector and a microphone for the camcorder so I could narrate old movies, BUT the projector is so loud. What kind of mike did you use? and how did you do it? I can hear your voice very well. I'm not making out that will in my efforts.
I have a few old projectors, you can try twisting the lens to clear up the picture. And if that doesn't work, you can move the projector closer or further away from whatever you're projecting onto.
