Bell, one of Uber's flying taxi partners, revealed the design of its vertical takeoff and landing air taxi at CES, a five-person hybrid-electric powered vehicle with six tilting ducted fans. The company showed off the cabin of its air taxi at CES last year, and this year, it's debuting a scale model of the vehicle now dubbed the Bell Nexus.

I agree with your sentiment that people are making this out to be some kind of new, groundbreaking thing when in reality it's just an iteration of helicopter technology... but there are a few differences that it has from average helicopters today. It's a tiltrotor (so it should be able to go faster) and uses ducted fans (which should help reduce noise).

@dagysteinjohansen7268 5 лет назад
Exciting?? Disappointing! Maybe I just don't get it, but it seems to me this thing, by requiring a helipad, can't really do anything that a helicopter can't. The whole point of "flying cars" is that they do *not* require their own infrastructure, but can travel wherever an ordinary car can.
@becomingfr33
@becomingfr33 5 лет назад
Also, like a helicopter, this thing is going to be way too loud. The only benefit is probably going to be that they can be produced cheaper than helicopters and won't require pilots.
@RichBordoni
@RichBordoni 5 лет назад
@@becomingfr33 It's a tiltrotor (or tiltfan?) though, so it will be faster than normal helicopters but it will probably be more expensive (not an aviation expert, just assuming that the added complexity = more $$$) Also, the ducted fan design and the hybrid engine should help reduce noise compared to normal helicopters.

Why would this be more affordable than a helicopter? Helicopter services exist and are used by rich people and ambulance service. I understand this is a hybrid helicopter which may bring some efficiency and noise benefits but why would it revolutionize transportation. I have rarely been in a helicopter and having an app to reserve one won't make me want to spend the money more then than now.
@RichBordoni
@RichBordoni 5 лет назад
Agreed, it just seems like an iterative improvement on helicopter technology to me. It's probably just going to replace already existing helicopter travel & usage. For it to really change anything I think it would have to be much cheaper and much safer/easier to pilot than existing helicopters.

while I agree it's very much just a modified helicopter design, flying is actually very easy for a computer to do when you have multiple propellers like that. They make it easy to stabilize. It's just like a big remote-control quadcopter. Since the open air has less obstacles than the road, it might be easier for AI to drive this than to drive a car. But I don't know for sure.

at first thought, you would say wow! this is innovation. but really thinking about it, it is a just like helicopter. it will only land on helipads. so going from places to places is not the most fastest because you need to find a helipad to land this thing. this is the same reason you dont see a lot of helicopters used for daily transport.
@RichBordoni
@RichBordoni 5 лет назад
There's also the fact that the average car is like $20-30k while the average helicopter is probably over $250-500k. But when helicopter designs get safer, quieter, easier to pilot (and cheaper) I think we'll begin to see them used more for transport.

This design is worthy of an amusement park or as in this use, an eye catching marketing piece. But the economy of it, it's practical use or safety issues far outweigh the return on investment. Let's not let this become another grant seeking boondoggle project by engineers and companies looking for investment by governments or the marketplace. It sucks capital out of real solutions. Now if this unit was more wisely attached to a large helium blimp, I might be more prone to accept it as a coming reality. Thumbs up Engadget for a glimpse of what's happening. 741

All the designs of theses flying taxi's have visible blades. I don't understand why the design isn't with the propellers on the base of the craft like a hovercraft. For a better design. Then you could design models like the shuttle transporters on star trek, a more futuristic design. All the current models are like hellecopters.

So this is an example of what the future of air travel should not do. I have tried to explain in the past why this is a very bad idea. What everyone is missing here is the fact that unlike an real aircraft this thing can't fly with the power off. Even a helicopter can fly for a short time with a complete loss of power and all airplanes can glide with a complete loss of power for much longer. We don't ever want to rely on safety measures to keep us safe in the air. Thinking that electric motors or parachutes as a safety measure or a backup system is just a bad idea for many reasons. Yes it is true electric motors are very reliable but they can't auto rotate to slow your fall from the sky. You also have to think about sabotage and poor maintenance over time because people will be people. Then there is the weather to think about and lightning strikes. I can only hope it won't take a crash and the death of people before this kind of people mover is banned from flying in the cities of tomorrow. I hope someone with vision can see there is a better way and stop the madness.
