"this man has published 63 novels. 63! I don't even think I have that many brain cells" I had to pause the video after this because I was laughing too hard, your comments give me life!!!!
Like models can’t read 😒 And see how they separate women in 2 categories… the pretty, sexy ones, and the intelectual ones that are allowed to carry a book around. Seriously, this person needs a therapist.
you are RIGHT about bellas outfit matching the stranger more, this journalist might know literature (or gatekeeping it) but she does not know fash-un bby
I love how Jack reads the article. Much more fun with his inputs which are coincidentally kinda similar to mine. So the stories from Instagram which made me really jealous were from this video...hmm 🥺❤️ I swear I've seen Jack talking about the opening line of The Stranger before.... Ah he read it in Feb Oh btw this video features Jack's need to hold the books he talks about.
I honestly can’t believe the article isn’t just heavily sarcastic satire. All of the more offensive quotes are citations from the linked Vogue article “Would You Join the Bella and Gigi Hadid Book Club?“ which does seem more sincere in how it describes books as accessories in fashion and genuinely talks about the Hadid’s reading almost like a fad that just came back into fashion. New York Post is kind of a conservative gossip rag but it honestly seems like this journalist just thought the vogue article was ridiculous and wrote up theirs in a ridiculous way. We probably don’t need to come down on the article itself too much
"Normalize telling people when to stop.... page 300" Also thank you for that brilliant drag! Funny how the sisters outfit changes every day but the book mysteriously stays the same until proximately the length of time it takes to finish a book. Don't know many fashion accessories like that!
Thank you for describing my feelings towards Stephen Kings exactly. I thought I was the only one who thinks they're way too long, but I'm glad to hear that Jack and Bella Hadid agree😅
Omg, what that journalist wrote about Bella and Gigi was truly uncalled for, insulting and out of bounds! Just because they r “super models” doesn’t mean they do not have the capability and the intellect to enjoy a good book! Granted being a super model is an elite opportunity to a chosen few in this world it is still like any other job….it is work and it takes a lot of work to stay on top. Their chosen profession does not define who they r as individuals nor should it. This gives new meaning as to why we should never judge anything or anyone at first glance.
"Smart women" - Only Emma Watson Smart women - literally any woman, in her own way, even though sometimes we make mistakes and bad judgements, just like men do. Man, I wish I /were/ pretty. Watch out, Emma Watson, I'm taking your smart woman place, because otherwise I really don't know. "with a plunging neckline" XD That's "très chic", girl. Agreed. Even "It" drags on a little too much for my taste, getting into details that probably weren't all that important and including things it probably didn't need to because there was already enough there... I mean, the supernatural /could/ be terrifying, but it depends on how it's done. And the real world /is/ terrifying enough... we don't need werewolves when we've got murderers and disorders that can turn a person from reasonable to delusional and diseases that can do some absolutely awful things to you. Who needs Cthulhu when you've got hippos and who needs Satan when you have man?
I think that if you're planning on reading the outsider by Stephen King you should start first by reading his trilogy Mr Mercedes, finders keepers, end of watch because the emotional attachment you'll get through them for the characters will make you enjoy reading the outsider more. Especially when you find that Holly Gibney (who was helping the detective in the trilogy) is now getting her own moment and is the mane character in this book.
They should read my favourite series ever. The books are light and the covers are so damn beautiful Edit: idk why this has 11 likes already. For anyone who’s wondering. It’s Patrick Melrose. Didn’t name it cause I thought ppl will be bored with so much info 😅
Jack you have to check out the red wheelbarrow, the abbey bookshop and book off (in the Marais) for less expensive books !! Shakespeare & co is glorious, but it’s so expensive, so those more affordable options are more than welcome for poor parisian students like you and I!!!
hi, luv ur videos!!! u should totally do one where u read shakespearean retellings!!! i just read “exit, pursued by a bear” (obvi a winters tale retelling, if a pretty loose one) by e. k. johnston, and it was INCREDIBLE!!! ik there r a lot more (these violent delights has been on my tbr FOREVER) so i think it’d be fun!!
I kinda like how the books create a contrast with the outfit colours though, especially the red one against the grey suit. As you may have guessed, I'm also most certainly not Anna Vintur.
For l'étranger, there's some debate on if "the stranger" is the best translation since stranger is a more literal translation, but "the outsider" makes more sense. I majored in French in college and kinda lean towards the outsider. However, i think most know it as the stranger. Curious what others think though! Loved this book and I read La Peste in French
Hey Jack! There are some great English-language bookstores in Paris that aren't Shakespeare and Co. that sell used books, so your bank account can survive :) My favorite is San Francisco Book co, it's hectic and full of lovely cheap, used books.
I remember watching some of your videos back in the day when StudyTube would be motivating for me at Uni - wow just stumbled across this video and your content has evolved so well, definitely sticking around :D
The stranger by Albert camus was like a breath of fresh air for me, I read it after Jack did a video of namjoon's book reccomendations and it's so so good, it still in my top 5
I read it, too after that video :) Really liked the way the main character told the story, kinda wish it was longer because I enjoyed the writing style
I haven't read this book but HBOMax did a show based on the book. I didn't realize when I was watching the show that it was based on a Stephan King book until I watched this video.
The Stranger was written following WW2 and was heavily influenced by Camus' experience in it. If you speak French, I absolutely recommend you read it in it's original language: there's some thing that simply are more haunting in their original tongue. I have to say that I like the alternate English title (The Outsider) for it, since it brings you back to the feeling that the narrator is an outsider to his own life
Jack, I recomend u to read "the tunnel" by Ernesto Sabato, its a latinamerican modern classic; it`s so similar in style to the stanger, I belive you'll enjoy it.
omg about The Stranger, you REALLY should check out « Meursault, contre enquête » by Kamel Daoud. It’s a contemporary fiction where the main character is the brother of the « Arab man » killed in The Stranger. It’s a fantastic retelling and criticism of The Stranger by Camus with a post colonialist approach. (you’d have to check if it’s been translated though!!)
I love Stephen King and I haven't read The Outsider, but I have the same complaint about unnecessary lengtht when reading The Eyes of The Dragon (read it in Spanish, don't know if this is the English name). The book itself is not long, but I think the story could work so much better as a short story or novelette instead of dragging it so it have the page count to become a novel
Didn't expect the video to be this funny 😆 the thing about King books dragging forever is so true. I read one his books for days and it was only 30% done and then I stopped reading it 🥲
Imagine thinking that someone would carry a 500-page book on their hand just as an accessory and not because they are actually reading them. Seeing Jack rip that article to shreds might be the best moment of my day
Books are so bothersome to carry. I always put them on my backpack cause I don't like holding things. Also, books are def not an indicator of intelligence, they are more so just a fun hobby to pass time with. That article is massively stereotypical and just rude
i used to carry books to school just to have them at hand whenever i could read and god was it annoying they were also mostly 300 pages paper backs so i can’t imagine how annoying it would be to carry a 500 page hardcover like why would anyone go to the trouble of doing that other than to read it
@@sin3358 These models definitely have the luxury of carrying books with their hands because of the nature of their job and the ease of transportation.
Yes it's misogynistic. Just because they're pretty doesn't mean they can't read. I hate the whole "beauty with brains" thing. Like, a woman can be BOTH attractive and smart. They're people, not a poorly written female character written by a man 👀 Is it that difficult to grasp!??
@@lbn6486 honey, i know. but you have to add me as elmo here as well, hm? because i dont know your name? what should i have called you, mr hype? lmao 😂😂😂
it is literally one of the dumbest things i've ever heard. who tf would see a person carrying a book and think "they must be carrying that around just to look cool"? who thinks like that? misogyny is embarrassing.
@@oyku9848 I think the saddest thing about this article is that it wasn’t some basement dwelling sweaty literature man it was a woman writing for a national publication. Goes to show how engrained these attitudes are
Big YES to not judging people for carrying around the same book for a while!! I'm a law student and it takes me a month to read normal sized fiction. I've already got these huge thousand-page casebooks and additional readings prioritised for class, so leisure reading is relegated to my 20 minute commute only :(
I think I was able to pick up one book, but couldn't bring myself to finish it because I get guilty, an average person surviving residency training and still have time to read non-medical books.
@@merzialately I totally get the guilt! Especially during exam season, I feel like I'm 'wasting' reading hours that I should use on exams :( let's get this degree so we can go back to guiltless reading❣
I had to finally give up and go for a Kindle. Since I could only really buy English-language books on Amazon, Jeffrey had me in a chokehold either way.
for me it's the opposite 😂 I live in a non-english speaking country and chose to read english books as they were cheaper. here they increase the price for the labour it takes to translate it to my country's language.
In Germany, English books are usually cheaper. Because there's this fixed price for German books but it doesn't apply to books in foreign languages (unless they are published by a German publisher, I think). And then there's also the "fun" habit of splitting one book into two volumes when translating it for no other reason than being able to make more money this way.
@@lateralight depends tbh. It can mean that he's unable to express a simple opinion without rambling nonstop about it and using way too many words to explain something, like, "I like chocolate". In a way, it is beautiful to be able to constantly make everything sound deeper than it is, on some other occasions it's unnecessary. Some people prefer directness, some prefer longer descriptions
@@user-qu8zs7vs1x same! I write so much so fast and I don’t know how I do it. Like 2 pages in 20 mins today- and a lot of that was in the last 5 mins when I panicked
It's definitely a skill to be able to convey a concept, an idea, or make 3-dimensional characters and an intriguing story within a short time frame. That's why there are so many short stories that aren't any good lol Agatha Christie, Daphne du Maurier, Edgar Allen Poe, E. Nesbit, and Arthur Conan Doyle do short stories really well.
