"Bella Ciao" (Goodbye, Beautiful) is an Italian workers' song that gained popularity during the Italian Civil War when it was sung by the Anti-Fascist partisans in the Committee for National Liberation (Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale, CLN). It was first written in the late 1800s and sung by striking farmers in Northern Italy, but when the CLN used it, they modified to lyrics to talk about the anti-fascist partisans who resisted Mussolinite and Hitlerite fascism. These days it is one of the most popular anti-fascist songs of all time, if not the most popular. Performed here by my favourite choir, the Trieste Partisan Choir (Tržaški partizanski pevski zbor / Coro partigiano Triestino)

Last verse is not commonly understood to be part of the song. Partisans in italy weren't exclusively left wing, but rather a very small minority from across the political spectrum.

Actually, the verse 'che mi sento di morir' can be interpreted in two ways: the first one is as 'because I feel death approaching', as it was translated here; but the second one is 'because I feel ready to die (for the partisans' cause)'. The wording of the verse and the use of the preposition 'di' point more toward the second meaning actually, but Italian allows for a lot of linguistic freedom in verses/poetry, so both options are on the table.

The correct translation would be "Because I feel like (dying / I am about to die)" rather than "feeling death approaching". But you are correct on the double interpretation. It hints at both the dramatism of grief ("I feel like I'm about to die (of indignation) from having my homeland taken away from me"), and as a commitment to the anti-fascist cause ("Today I feel like I could die for my homeland/ideals") Italians use these dramatic expressions very often, like "I felt death creeping up behind my back" when you feel shivers (as my nonno used to say), or "you're going to kill me from embarassment/disgust/etc", but since "di" is used, that is correct, it also indicates willingness towards sacrifice.

@DaveCharbel and I love both because my mother was Italian and my father was Polish, they met and married in Italy at the end of ww2 and were incredible people. Both saw awful things, dad was at Monte Cassino to name just one battle. I miss them dearly but they left me with huge patriotism for both countries.

An unexpected bond connecting China, Italy, and Serbia. Long live internationalism. Although I was born in 2000, I miss the days when people ignore national borders, fought for the same ideal. This Rare version of this song, is to me the most beautiful. Especially as you read the words. My beloved Grandparents lost their part of Italy to the Germans. My Nonna died, my Nonno was taken by the Germans and his five children fled in the night. My mothers last memories of her childhood hometown was the Mountains covered in Snow and the feilds of red Poppies in the spring... My Nonno died in a Concentration camp in Austria, and I wonder, he being a humble farmer, if he and the others from his town sung this this song as they were taken to their deaths. I can remember my Mother and Aunty singing this when i was small... Being older and understanding my family history much better... This song hits home in a way, that makes you cry...

The last verse is a recent addition, never lissened before. Actually, is false that "the CLN used it" and is also false that "It was first written in the late 1800s and sung by striking farmers in Northern Italy", there is no sign, nobody sung "Bella Ciao" before the '60s.

As a child of Soviet people who defended Nazis (not saying that it was done without any help, ofc not), this makes my eyes be full of tears. United nations, united goal, united brothers of weapon, - italian, soviet, american... My grandgrandpa was at Elba, where Soviet and American soldiers meet. I was too young to remember all, but I remember his face and eyes, - it always became wet and full of tears, good tears and memories. Memories of brothers from other country. Spectacular performance. I must admit it's the first time I hear the last verse. This song, this anthem, it's becoming more and more relevant, now that many Countries in Europe are turning more or less openly fascist. Hungary, Poland, partially some Scandinavian Countries, United Kingdom and, first and foremost, Italy, where Prime Minister, President of the Senate, even Parliament and Senate themselves are admittedly as black as they can be. The only saving grace is the President of the Republic, fighting as much as it is in his power these despicable individuals.

I am 20% Italian, this song makes me proud of my heritage escpecially of my great grandpa and my great great grandpa who fought in ww1 and ww2, great gramps helped liberate the islands of sardinia and corsica, and helped liberate the north of the greuling fascists, and my great great grandpa helped Liberate Venezia from the Austro-Hungarians in ww1, as my family traces its roots from Corsica, Love From Aiacciu, Corsu
