This song hits my soft spot and makes me cry. When I was 19, took 48 hours train to Beijing. "The State I am in" keeps me companioned in pursuits of the life in big cities. I have lived there for a decade and followed with London and New York. I never stopped trying to search and perhaps liberating... from the haunted trance. To my friend who can't make it, an old friend from the days of being young and stupid while full of hope, has committed suicide at the age of 30, 2017. I guess he is still there around that old flat I lived in, Sadly, I left him behind.

While there is no "best" Belle and Sebastian song, the instrumental part from 2:14 - 2:50 is some of the most lusciously musical and ethereal phrasings I've ever heard! If there was a Nobel Prize for basslines, this song would be in the running.

This might be my favourite song on the album. "Pray, gay; God doesn't care about the way you're leaning" is such a powerful message, I love it.

Considering Stuart's past Christian themed lyrics, I'm surprised he seems to be intentionally rejecting the words of Jesus in this song. Stuart sings "everybody gets an even shot at making heaven , wide is the gate," but Matthew 7:13-14 (KJV), reads: "wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction ... strait is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." Sadly, this song's lyric seems like an intentional rejection of the gospel saying

It's a variation of the metaphor but in a different context. It doesn't sound like it's rejecting anything that goes before. In this context it's about who can be considered for heaven, and Stuart is saying no-one is precluded based on who they are: "God doesn't care about the way you're leaning", "Not criticised or hated just for the way you are". So "wide is the gate" may reuse the metaphor in a different way, but it's still valid here. I think the original gospel wording is in relation to the choices and actions people undertake on their journey e.g that the wide gate is about taking the easy path, but instead people need to follow the narrow and longer one. There are still references in this song to that, but without the metaphor: "Make like the elephant and use your memory to pick a path", "We will be recognised for what we do". Anyway, all seems good. It's worth reversing our ways of looking at things, in this case happily.

@@schmedia2537 I have some criticisms of his interpretation of the lyrics but the idea that he both stops caring and also falls in love with the lyrics seems a bit much. I find it hard to believe you love the lyrics in isolation of any belief system, it normally means something to different people and they react to that.

All religions are based on falsehoods. It doesn't stop you enjoying gospel music. I have known Stuart since the early days of Belle & Sebastian & I can assure you he would mean no disrespect to any religion.
