Didn't he throw out his arm due to innings early on, and the fact he walked a lot of guys while giving up tons of hits? He led the league in complete games a few times while facing the most batters or second most a couple of times. If you are a fan, just curious, how hard did he throw? I just looked up his stats, and I thought he struck out a hell of a lot more people than he did. I could have sworn he threw really HARD. Not 100 mph, but 95-97. I watched him pitch a few times and he was filthy...

There was actually a first collision between Belle and Vina that occurred in the 3rd inning with Belle on first base. Vina fielded a grounder, charged Belle for the tag, then threw to first for the double play after Belle bumped him lightly. In an interview with spike lee, Dave Nelson, indians 1st base coach reveals that he had chewed out Belle for failing to do the same thing to Vina earlier in the game. Vina was not seriously hurt on the play

@Nick de windt The story is, is that Kenny Lofton and Albert Belle would go back and forth with the temperature they wanted in the clubhouse. Belle wanted it really cold and Lofton wanted it normal room temperature. So one time before a game, not sure what season, Belle smashed it on the wall with a baseball bat, as you said. The story of it is in both Kenny Lofton's and Omar Vizquel's book.

It was a taken in baseball circles that Albert Belle was nuts... The Indians billed him $10,000 a year for the damage he caused in clubhouses on the road and at home, and tolerated his behavior only because he was an awesome slugger... He slurped coffee constantly and seemed to be on a perpetual caffeinated frenzy. Few escaped his wrath: on some days he would destroy the postgame buffet...launching plates into the shower... after one poor at-bat against Boston, he retreated to the visitors' clubhouse and took a bat to teammate Kenny Lofton's boombox. Belle preferred to have the clubhouse cold, below 60 degrees, and when one chilly teammate turned up the heat, Belle walked over, turned down the thermostat and smashed it with his bat. His nickname, thereafter, was "Mr. Freeze."

I know I'm in the minority on this, but while it wasn't necessary for Albert Belle to crush him like that, I never thought he was fully in the wrong. Vina is in the baseline, he clearly puts his own arms up to brace for impact instead of trying to sidestep and apply a tag, and Belle didn't change his running path at all. I was always taught that if you hang out in the basepath and get hit by a runner, that's on you.
@sacdoesvlogs
@sacdoesvlogs 10 лет назад
Definitely agree with you on that one.
@CNordy
@CNordy 10 лет назад
Except you're wrong. As an umpire, I'm calling killing the play...I have Belle out on the tag, then causing interference because the fielder has "right of way" when fielding the ball and Belle has to go around him, calling the batter-runner out at 1B for Belle's interference on a potential double play, and then tossing Belle for the malicious contact. The runner never has the right to demolish a defender standing in the way like that. You may have obstruction if he blocks his path, but the runner still can't blast him like that ever.
@chrizles
@chrizles 10 лет назад
OffConstantly13 he didn't only run into him, he applied force with his forearm. in my eyes, that's disrupting the play.
@CNordy
@CNordy 10 лет назад
OffConstantly13 The ball doesn't "have to be loose" for it still to be interference. In this case, you can see Belle throw his forearm ahead and intentionally speed up as he approaches. His only intent was to nearly punch the fielder and knock the ball loose. If he slides and takes him out, it's legal, but this is a malicious act because of the forearm...therefore he's out and ejected and since there was a high likelihood of a double play, they get the batter-runner out too!
@stephentipton31
@stephentipton31 10 лет назад
I grant that the forearm shiver was excessive, though I think it only seemed that bad because of the size differences between the two players. However, if a runner is on a straight-line path between two bases and a fielder not in the process of fielding a ball is standing directly in your path, I'd say it's only natural for the runner to bring his arms up as a natural protective instinct for the imminent collision. While Belle got him good on the collision, what are his reasonable alternatives as a guy trying to win the game? He is under no obligation to give himself up. He is forced to second, so he cannot retreat to first. The fielder is directly in his line to second and he likely cannot stop himself...I stand by the idea that Albert Belle had no good competitive options that did not involve proceeding directly to second base, even if that meant going directly through a second baseman who should not have subjected himself to that punishment.

THANKYOU!!! he had a shitty assed Nazi style coif cut.... some people can rock the depression era/Nazi Wehrmacht dome but, not this cat! I will say that he is a dumb shit for running toward then tagging a runner during a double play...especially with a left handed batter with wheels. fundamentals say throw to the short stop for the dp. there is a reason they call it "turning two."
@B-a-t-m-a-n
@B-a-t-m-a-n 10 лет назад
highonimmi Did you watch the play? How the hell was Vina going to make a throw to the shortstop? His momentum would have made that impossible and the wrong play to make anyway. And could you imagine what would have happened to him if he'd turned his back to Belle and taken that cheap shot in the back? He'd be dead.
@highonimmi
@highonimmi 10 лет назад
I think belle might have gotten too excited seeing vina come towards him and maybe wanted to dry hump his rump...maybe that's why he forearmed him cuz he realized his own man love needs. getting back to vina..he took at least 2 steps. if he can't stop and turn to the shortstop at second he needs to stop playing. all he had to do is crow hop one time and side arm it to second base. I used to do it at 3rd base & 2nd base when I fielded any ball. I picked up the ball, swung my hips around, (crow hopped) set my pivot foot, then threw to the base. all this in one fluid motion within a step of the ball touching my glove. no matter where the ball was hit to my side, in front of me.... you have to do countless reps during drills to get this to become second nature but, once you get it down its cake.
@B-a-t-m-a-n
@B-a-t-m-a-n 10 лет назад
highonimmi I used to play shortstop mostly, but even I can see that if he had tried any crow-hopping he would've gotten creamed even worse than he already did. I can't believe you can't see that the only play Vina had was the one he attempted. Why would he attempt a very difficult throw when the play was right in front of him?
@highonimmi
@highonimmi 10 лет назад
because I used to turn two doing that exact play...and never got creamed. maybe he doesn't have the athletic ability to slow down and tag belle. maybe he doesn't have the skillset to do it...either way, he had a fucked up doo and belle needs to play football. maybe rugby.

I just read about this (I know, I'm like 25 years late lol), and wanted to see it. Earlier in the game, Belle had bailed out on a double play and just stopped running, and then he got screamed at by his coaches to keep running balls out. Then he did this in response to them chewing him out. I think this was a bit of a dirty play, but the size difference between the two guys makes it seem much worse than it really was

I was watching this game when it happened and I've watched this clip on RU-vid so many times and laughed my *** off, but I've noticed in the last couple months that more people are popping up saying Vina's teammates should have stood up for him. Back then, I don't remember anybody "standing up" to Albert Belle. The man was a giant among boys and had the most vicious temper I've ever seen on a baseball player. He's not like the weenies Manny Machado and Bryce Harper; they cry and whine, but ultimately go back to the dugout after their pouting session. Belle, on the other hand, would (almost literally) crack skulls without warning; no blustering, no yelling, just straight ferocity. Grown men were terrified of him, and rightfully so. He was the Mike Tyson of baseball.

It looks dirty, but I remember Vina did the exact same thing on an earlier double play that was turned. If you notice, he has an opportunity to just reach out and tag him. For some reason he felt the need to maneuver right into the baseline and impede Belle's forward progress. It came out later that the Indians' first base coach actually advised Belle to collide with Vina if he got in the baseline like that again.
