BellowsTrain Whistle

The whistles are loud and very realistic sounding. The bellows provides the air to blow the whistles. All the parts are easy to find. The project does not require any special skills.
The whistles are made from standard 3/4" I.D. PVC. The whistles are tuned to Bb, D, F, and G. The whistles are approximately 7" (Bb), 8" (D), 9" (F) and 10" (G) without the end caps and 90 degree elbows.
If you would like to have more detailed instructions on how to build this train whistle, go to Amazon. com, kindle book section, and search for "BELLOWS TRAIN WHISTLE". The construction manual contains over 70 photos and diagrams along with step by step detailed instructions.
The bellows cloth is imitation leather (Naugahyde) found at most fabric stores.

I'm a HS band director, making this for my MS colleague. The pitches make a G minor 7th chord, or (lowest to highest) G, Bb, D, F. In experimenting with the lengths during construction, this was the most logical configuration. So G = 10 in. pipe, Bb = 9 in. pipe, D = 8 in. pipe, F = 7 in. pipe. I'll be fine tuning it so the lengths will be more precise, but these are the approximate lengths for each pitch.
@dougattridge4877

I was actualy just trying to determin the lengths had the first on (7" ) then I saw this Knew my first one was right when I saw this Ill take your word on the rest:) Thanks for doing that work

Actually, the notes are G, Bb, Db and Eb, which means it's an Eb7 chord. www.scales-chords.com/findnotes_en.php?n1=G&n2=&n3=&n4=Bb&n5=Db&n6=Eb

@@adamdrummer1991 Yeah, it seems you're right. Couldn't hear it well, but I guess to my ears the minor chord sounded more train like, and the bellows driven whistles makes that hard to tell what's sounding in the right pitch. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks Ken for the design. I have built mine from your plans though I have to say the sizes are a little out. Those pipes aren't available her in the UK so I had to buy them in Home Depot on a recent visit to the USA. My wife wasn't too happy about being taken to a hardware store on our first day of the vacation. We had actually gone to Nashville to see the total eclipse, and its amazing how often we heard the trains passing through sounding their horns. The guys in Home Depot were bemused when I told them what I wanted the fittings for but they were keen to cut them to sizes I could fit in the suitcase. All in all it was a great project and a great trip.

Excellent presentation! Clear, concise, and complete. It is refreshing to actually hear someone speaking and giving explanations in an instructional video. Far too many of them are vocally silent productions showing only a confusing series of the presenter's "wizardry" . At the conclusion, we are supposed to be impressed -- NOT! Great job in so many ways.

am confused about pipe lengths which are different between your video and your book. On the video you state that Bb is the short pipe then D then F then G. In your book you state that Bb is short pipe then G Then F then D. I am no music specialist and would like the correct info quickly as I have a deadline of March 6 to have this complete

If you accidentally sand the wooden plug too much a thin layer of silicone caulk on the plug will not only hold it in place, but make it air tight

So I'm curious the larger the pipe and shorter the tube the deeper the tone? Small the pipe longer the tube higher the tone? How dose pressure effect the whistle effect? I ask because I have a compressor at work we dump daily... might be fun to make some whistles to mount to it's dump valve haha.
