With apologies to Kevin Costner and the creators of the movie, Field of Dreams, I have modified the phrase "Build it and they will come." to "Place it and they will come" and by "it" I'm referring to a convenient perch for a bird.
In this case, I had often seen and heard Belted Kingfishers at a nearby marsh. But they were usually perched far out in the water (Where there were perches!). Not great for photos. Plus, Kingfishers are one of the most spooky of all birds...Meaning they fly at the first sight of a human. So I found a spot on the edge of the marsh where I could get a clear view of the water. I found a good looking perch in my woods at home, hauled it to the spot and stuck it in the mud. I set up my pop-up blind about 20 yards away and waited....But I didn't have to wait very long as a Belted Kingfisher found the perch within 15 minutes!

These birds amaze me. That beak! The dives! The calls they make! And of course.... the mohawk!

That was a totally awesome video and amazing photographs you took. Loved the instructional portion of the video and your detailed information regarding camera settings. I was just googling kingfisher birds in Wisconsin and came across your RU-vid video. You just made my day! Be well.

I adore Kingfishers. We have belted Kingfishers here. Dad and I always look for one we have called Rex, and we consider him a good omen of things to come. :D

Wonderfully done and the fooage is right on! Thank you for sharing. Oftentimes when we've paddled down the river; Kingfisher gave out the first shrill and seemed to always keep ahead of us. Love the KINGFISHERS Family Alcedinidae.

Beautiful, absolutely! And thank you. But just FYI: the bird with the rusty belt is the female. The kingfisher is one of the few species where the male’s coloration is duller than the female’s.

Great video! I have done the same down here in Florida with good results. It is a great experience to be able to get close to these spooky birds.

Great video!!! Thank for the advice. I will try to do this where I live in Puerto Rico since these birds are difficult to photograph when in migration season.

Great job on the Kingfisher, Sparky. I believe they are relatives of our Kookaburras here in Australia which are also Kingfishers.

I saw my first one today in real life and I just knew it was a kingfisher and I decided I was going to go ahead and just look here and there you are they are so beautiful I was having an argument with the fish that he caught that's what captured my attention cuz I'm not used to hearing that call that sound that he was making what an amazing adventure Now you ain't said you needed a blind I don't know if that is for your camera or if that's actually just to kind of cloak your presence so that he doesn't fly off he was out in the open and in a very peculiar place where there's a lot of other types of birds that show up to swim and hunt and fish and all that stuff incredibly beautiful I will admit he didn't let me get too close but he also didn't go too far
