This John Deere Model R belongs to Jim White of Oracle, Arizona, and is powered by a two-cylinder diesel with a bore of 5 3/4 " and stroke of 8". The diesel engine is started with a two-cylinder gasoline pony motor. This was shot at the 2012 Arizona Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Assc. Show in Apache Junction, AZ on 3-10-12.

Back in the day, I could line up and hook up the belt to the hammer mill in the granary by myself when I ground corn. Brings back some fond memories, for sure.

Dad and I did a lot of farming with the R . It was our first "Big Tractor", before that it was the model D and our W6 International .. God I miss those days

Reading this comment section is awful. Those guys did a fabulous job setting the tractor and tracking that belt. Also that belt has to be that long or the radiator would be plugged with chaff in 15 minutes

This sounds like a government job ... 36 "experts" telling the only guy working how to do it !!! LOL !!!! I don't know crap about doodly but I do remember that belt slapping the whole time we were putting oats into the thrasher and my sister and I bagging as fast as we could go !! Thanks for the GREAT memories weather these guys know what the Hell they're doing or not !! You managed to GIT-ER-DUN !! That's what really matters ...and no one got hurt. Some people called these things "MAN KILLERS". You had to keep your mind right running these machines. My Dad had the only threshing machine in our town. McCormick Deering. Every year we went from farm to farm with most of the local farmers working together to get everyone's crops in. GREAT STUFF !! The women made some AWESOME meals for everyone to enjoy ! GREAT DAYS gone by !! We even did a couple BARN RASINGS when friends of our had the misfortune of his barn burning to the ground. All the local farmers took some of the heard of dairy cows to milk for them. My Dad kicked in an extra can of milk every day to help our neighbor recover some of his loss. THAT'S what country folks do .... HELP ONE ANOTHER.

Thanks for checking out my video! I'm glad it brought back some good memories for you. Hard work for sure going around to all the farms, but it was nice that all that could pitch-in and help, did in their own way, to get all crops in and threshed. Sounds like it was a good time.

When I was 13 years old I would help my dad hook up a 70 tractor in 1957 to a deerborn? hammer mill and another for a while to do sweet sorghum bundles into a feed bunk. I can't remember that we took long to setup. I still have the belt.

I figure you guys were quicker out of familiarity, as almost nothing has been belt driven like this since the 60s. So most people there probably do this once a year. By the way, I own a model 70 row crop gas 👍

You are a bit wrong. This tractor is not the first model R built (which would have the serial number 1000). That plate means that the model R is the first Diesel tractor John Deere built. Serial number 13463 means that this model R was built in 1952.

you need 40 more feet of belt ... and 7 more old guys to tell the young kid how easy he's got it now-a-days ....

You haven't lived until you belted a J. I. Case steamer to a Case 36" thresher. The one we used had very poor power steering.

All R's are diesels, yes. Built 49-54'.

The sign is WRONG. 42+ hp on the drawbar, 48+ on the belt. Per Nebraska tests

It seems to me that you could make some sort of gadget out of a combination square (possibly with a couple of studs on it to allow for the curve on the pulley to steer the belt into the center) and you'd have a helper run out a hundred feet of rope on the ground, guiding him to the right or left to line it up with "square to the pulley", then the tractor would line up its pulley to align to that rope which would tend to line it up square on the first try.

Back in the day when this was a common everyday practice on many farms, I bet they're were many tricks and maybe even some gadgets used to speed up this process. Also, practice makes perfect too and maybe they just got it down and could do it more quickly just from repetition.

Oh, ok. Thanks for the correction. I am far from an authority on tractors. As you can see I get the information from whatever the owner puts on their machines. I did some internet searching for info on these tractors and thats how I came up with the year 1949, because that's when it said that Model R's went into production. I didn't see anything about gas or diesel, so I just thought they were all diesels.

In the two cylinder models the r was always diesel and had the option of a regular starter or a gasoline 4 cylinder pony motor
@espeescotty
@espeescotty 10 лет назад
Oh, I didn't know the pony motor was a 4-banger. I 'll have to take a closer look at that next time. Last month I got video of this tractor being started with the pony motor. I should have it posted in a couple of weeks.

They did get it going, but for a reason I can't remember now, I didn't get video of it that day. But if you checkout my video titled "John Deere Thresher Demo Powered By John Deere Model R Diesel", you will see a pretty nice video of it in action 2-years later. It was shot with a better HD camera too. Thanks for watching.

Dad and I hooked up a “G” to a “JD” hammermill many times to grind various feeds for our milk cows etc. The belt was not very long and Dad was very good and quick at getting the belt to run.

4 cycle, 2 cylinder actually. Have started many D-7's, 120's & old John Deere tractors.

John Deere R tractors used a two-cylinder opposed piston gasoline-powered pony motor to start the main two-cylinder Diesel engine engine.

IKR! Pops and I use to assist at a local festival. He grew up using belt drives and teams of horses when the tractor was for the thresher only. Taught me to square the belt off laying on the ground.. then pull up over the belt which gave a near perfectly alignment. Then pull the belt out and hook up.. no idea wth they are doing here.

That belt is too long. move the thresher not the power unit.
@RJ1999x
@RJ1999x 6 лет назад
Thomas R. Miller threshing machine belts were always long. This was for 2 reasons, 1 the weight of the belt help keep it tight enough to drive a load, and 2 it kept the tractor far enough away that Sparks from the exhaust wouldn't start the straw on fire. You never move the machine either it's stationary and set on blocks to keep it level, always move the tractor
@Thoroughly_Wet
@Thoroughly_Wet 5 лет назад
It's easier to move the *self propelled* power unit, and as the other commenter said, it's long for a reason
