CongaMasterClass.com Featuring Michael Spiro.
Bembe is a sacred style of drumming in Cuba originating from the Yoruban people of Africa. There are many different styles of Bembe, played with hands or sticks, but each are designed to help accompany the singers and dancers of the music. In this lesson, I will go over the style of Bembe played with hands, which consists of a high, middle, and low drum part, as well as a bell pattern.

In fact, this is the clearest and simplest explanation of bembé I've ever seen. I had heard it described as a 6/8, but that didn't make sense to me with rumba clave. I knew many African rhythms to be 12/8, so your breakdown of this as four triplets makes perfect sense. I saw Ginger Baker try to make a similar explanation of 12/8 rhythms one time, but yours is the one that really clarified this for ME. Thanks!!!

Michael, thanks for sharing this excellent reference. Bravo ! I've found the referenced bell rhythm, notated in ternary form, which has lead to several related thematic structures. Piano and percussion studies continue, after many years.

For double-extra super credit, play the two drum parts together like he does near the end of the video, AND play the bell part with a foot pedal! My brain started to melt when I tried,

Mike, falta la caja - you should mention, that it plays the improvisations and that many caja-patterns have an open tone in count 1! And please provide some caja improvisation examples... Thank you ;-)

Great instructional video on Bembe! I missed the the third drum, Tumba part. It would be good to see your take on the Tumba. Do you have a video on the Tumba part somewhere? Thank you!

Very well done. You say at the beginning that bembe is usually played with three drums, yet you show only two. What does the low drum play?

Thanks for breaking down the rhythm! I'm going to see if I can't work it for two fingerstyle bodhran players. I just noticed how far apart the tones are spread out on the conga from center to the frame.

@todei79 I've seen it taught piece by piece. meaning, try getting just the first two hits (1 a), and feel how that falls within one beat, then rest for the remainder of the measure. next, try adding one or two more hits so, 1 a &a rest rest- make sure there is a rest on 2! now you're already halfway to playing the complete bell part!

This 12/8 rhythm is so difficult for me. Can anyone suggest a specific drill to practice so I can get it down. I was trying to do the foot tap while trying to clap the bell pattern but dang, I just can't get it yet. Is there a more simpler pattern to practice so I can get this 12/8 down? Thank you all in advance.

1 T S 4 T S (in 6/8), where T=tone and S=slap. You're playing the tone/slap on counts of 2 + 3, 5 + 6.

Viviana Belle actually the high drum is on 1 2 and 4 5.

@todei79 play it as slow as you can and once you have it in a very very slow tempo, little by little keep going up with the tempo and once you have it, slow it down again till you can play it at freewill :) just a little advice...

why counting in 4/4 and not 6/8?
@bigjavs4581

+Evan Perry-Giblin It's not 4/4, he's counting in 12/8. 4 divisions of three eighth notes.
