I was lucky to study the repertoire and compositions of Doudou Ndiaye Rose and his family with my dear teacher Aly Ndiaye Rose. In this video with Gala Celia, we play one of my favorite compositions by Aly.
Senegalese drumming is so beautiful in my eyes, mostly because of the unique expression made possible by the hand-stick technique. It allows you to speak and create complex sounds and gestures.
Traditionally the Sabar drums were used to speak a language and transfer messages from village to village. It is rare to find Senegalese drummers who still speak the language like they used to.
On the other hand, there's the artistic language that presents compositions from the different families of drummers in Senegal. This style not only preserves tradition but also pushes the boundaries of these instruments to new heights.
