It's sad watching this now. I remember watching this in 2010 when it first aired on tv hoping that Ben would make a change. Here we are 8 years later and he's worse than ever. Very sad.
@@hazelwalsh3269 how's he meant to make a change? He's trapped in himself. He needs help , actual real HELP, not prison but also not worthless sympathy.
@@lostcash8374 Is there a answer though? Rehab he can just walk out on,hes done that several times.Ultimately it takes a ton of willpower and wanting to change and of course helps to have support of family and friends
It’s a disease it doesn’t discriminate, no matter how successful of privileged you are it will take everything from you to the point where you have nothing left to give it.
Just seen a short vid Insta about his doco, I watched it probably 2 or 3 times in the past, back here to watch it again in 2024! What an insane documentary
I always watch it. How fucken crazy was it..people who have never taken drugs think coke, ice pills are performance enhancing they're not. It's like putting yourself back 1-2 weeks of fitness every time you have a bender. The fact he was able to do that throughout the year, win a Brownlow, win a grand final. Insane.
Dennis Cometti quote I will always remember the first time West Coast played Fremantle (Josh Carr) after the evade police /swimming incident ...."Just like last summer, Cousins running away from Carr"
One of the saddest stories from the AFL imo.....once such a talented, beautiful young man with the world at his feet, who chose the wrong path. Just goes to show addiction can affect all manner of people and their families and it becomes a losing battle for everyone.
I was a massage therapist at the rehab where Ben stayed in Malibu He was such a nice guy, and he so badly wanted to stay clean and play football So sad to know he is struggling so much. I only wish him wonderful things and hope he can mend his broken soul
Nice guys don't beat their wives, abuse and neglect their children and get a drug over lord to stand over wife to scare her into letting him to see their children he's a fukn scumbag
That's too bad I first heard of him on the crime in sports podcast, he was definitely a world class athlete. But I must say your guys AFL new era football hats are awesome, I don't understand the rules to the sport but wish we could get the hats in our stores in Canada.
yep i'm aware its now 6yrs past but sometimes i need to watch this doco i'm a meth addict trying my best to be a recovering one i didnt play afl but i put the same intensity in my work which i did successfully but made some mistakes which pop up and bite me in the ass still. I've hurt and caused good people pain but im still battling on the road to recovery and still detour cse itrs sofkn hard to fight. Benny i use this doco to help me mate you are still a champion i hope you keep fighting - They call me badman bretto.
Derrick it's still a daily battle i don't use it daily but i can't say that i'm clean either i can go a few weeks then use it but only 1day then nothing and a single hit again and so on.... but it's always in my mind i used amphetamines 4-5 days p/week numerous times a day since 1998 smoked dope daily from say the mid to late 80's i was functioning addict but i havent done dope in over 12 mth or cigs and haven't replaced them with another, I;m now seeing a therapist and a psych every week,my g.p monthly im finally accepting the help. So if im honest Derrick i'm doing pretty well things are ok I hope things are good you to. once again thanks you wouldn't believe how much it means to me. merry xmas
I would encourage you to receive prayer and counselling. Drugs addiction has a spiritual side to it. There are devils tormenting you. Please contact the nearest Healing Rooms or Church for prayer and counselling. Jr
Life is full of choices.. no excuses can't blame the parents alone. A man's own mind causes him to do evil. Drugs & the demons that come with it.. it's just best to stay away from the beginning ✌️
His dad tried to stop the club from putting too much responsibility on him at too young an age and they didn’t listen. The blame is not entirely on the club but they definitely had a role to play in it
@Kylie B What an unbelievable bunch of crap. Omg, I’m super famous, have a tonne of cash, women throw themselves at me, gave loads of friends, good looking, elite sports person Nawwwww Howwww Harrrrrd Jeez it must have been SOOO hard living the life of Ben cousins Who has never had problems, never experienced loss, or desperation, or a Single hardship. Who had never had to deal with the crap average people have to, and have no one or nothing, no money, unable to pay your bills, and be hated by everyone you used to once care about. Pooooor Ben, it just must have been So tough being handsome rich and loved by everyone!! What a joke he is, and even worse for you thinking any of that is the slightest reason to deliberately turn yourself into a drug riddled piece of human excrement.
2018 i still love you Benjamin Cousins, reading your book right now...i know liviing with addiction or having addictive personality is hard. I hope you are better now.
How terribly sad. An attractive young man who seemed to have it all but brought down by drug addiction. It really blows apart the stereotype of druggies being scruffy, unemployed losers.
Ben was definitely sacrificed over the drugs in afl issue. Makes you laugh when you think of many of the “greats” in the 80s who played games off their heads on speed. Hawthorns great run in the 80s comes to mind. But it seems if the media wasn’t all over it the afl didn’t care. Drugs were huge in the 80s but nobody cared at the time. I hope Ben is doing ok. He’s such a damn likeable personality. Sometimes users can never beat addiction & maybe the damage done to the brain is irreversible making getting clean even harder. His thinking that he’s not hurting anyone is so typical. Firstly he’s hurting himself the most, and secondly the people that love him. Addiction is a bastard.
I will always stand behind Benny no matter what has happened. The media have a funny way of blowing things out of proportion to make things bigger than they really are. At the end of the day, high profile player for a football club, he is still a human just like you and me. I will back him 100% and no one has the right to judge his addiction unless they have been there themselves or in a similar situation. Proud of you Ben for standing up and sharing your story xox
I met Ben in Acacia, he is really good bloke and just another lad. Being an addict I can totally understand why he made the choices he has. But at the end of the day he has achieved what most can only dream of.
Fck that. He did it to himself. It’s just beyond sheer stupidity to start it in the first place He wasn’t dealing with pain or grief or loss, he was just celebrating how awesome he thought he was He absolutely deserves everything that’s happened to him
I'm not even an AFL fan bit let's get this straight. We are all human and we all make mistakes. I have and still struggle with addiction (alcohol) but I couldn't imagine going through it with the amount of media and headline scrutiny this guy has had to endure. It's hard enough without all of that and I do undestand that with being a superstar that all comes with it. Instead of commenting on this and that about him regardless of opinion, from what I saw this guy just needs a break. I really feel for him
Bloke is an absolute legend, don't give a fuck what anyone says. To be able to play and train at such an elite level and get cooked out of his brain after the games and in the off season takes a lot. Benny did have a lot of potential though, sorta sad.
Saints supporter here… huge missed opportunity. Saints would have won a flag and Cousins winning as well what a legendary story that would have been. Dumb by the Saints…
He seems to be a really good bloke that’s in a unfortunate situation I hope he overcomes his addiction he has a good family around him stay strong guys and all the best Ben and family
Who gives a crap about if he can kick a ball Like wowwww bro, that totally sums up your worth as a human being He is a drug riddled piece of crap. He never had a thing to deal with, he just wanted to party and get messed up and did everything to himself and got a Million chances compared to what an average Joe would get
56:30 - 57:28 This right here was incredibly said and unfortunate that Ben didn't learn this at the time, the last thing he needed was to be playing footy especially in Melbourne
How a Champion fell from grace....such a powerful message on the effects of drugs....still respect him for the accomplishment he did as a Football player.
He’s not a ‘champion’ anything and goes to show how brainwashed you are to throw that word around He’s some asshole who used to run around kicking a ball, and 100% on his own merit became the biggest drug riddled piece of crap goung He’s not a ‘champion’ anything Sports isn’t real and it means absolutely nothing
What a problem to have! Anywhere he went in perth, there would be women all over him! Wonder whats actually plaugeing him. What his 'demons' are. Cause from the outside looking in, he has everything. Good looks, great body, plays AFL, has shit ton of money, pick of any girl he wanted. Dont get it..
@@chrisd_85like most celebrities etc it’s a lifestyle . They have everything and they get bored they never think the drugs will take over but …drugs don’t discriminate and unfortunately leads to their demise . Very sad
I love hearing junkies tell their rock bottom stories 😂😂😂there's nothing unique about his story. there are 100's of 1000's of others suffering with the same condition .
1st and for most I have been through what Ben did. 2nd I am 4 years clean 9th of December. 3rd I had the same support from my family even though I was a bit older than him. 4th he needs to find a new release cos we all need that. 5th for me it was seeing the right doctor and getting the prescription pills for my brain to be able to function like a normal human being it takes time but it works. The clouds in your brain will disapate and you can make better decisions in your life. I hope he can do what I did. GOD BLESS YOU BEN.
I have the privilege of knowing Ben personally, for a Brownlow medalist and premiership player he is extremely humble and down to earth. His achievements during his spectacular career are ones most of us can only dream of. He is retired from footy so his life should now be left private, yet the grubs that are the media keep putting such unimportant events such as failed drug tests on the news so people can sit in their little safe bubbles and vicariously make judgements about him without knowing the facts about why he chooses to make the choices he does. He even says himself if you make your bed, you lie in it. To the fake media who make these menial stories to sell pathetic gossip magazines and news, leave Ben the fuck alone.
I'll never forget what Akermanis said about him when he played on him, Aker said he came out in the second half and ran harder than the first half. So I'd say that their premiership needs to be questioned, because speed/meth gives you energy that you would not believe if you've never tried the drug. you can overcome pain, mental stresses etc and it gives the user a massively unfair advantage over players not on it, it turns you into Superman. Also he wasn't the only Eagles player using meth in the grand final and the years either side of that final. It should be wiped from the record books. The club knew he and others were doing it as well but they turned a blind eye because winning is all that matters. They knew well before it became public because the cops were telling the club, ordinary Joes who seen him and team mates smoking up big on the meth pipe, the club only became "concerned" when it became public knowledge, so they're just as guilty
Lmao I had team mates try this trick in junior football. They were talented players but it didn't have the effect they thought it would accuracy off the foot and hand went out the window couldn't take a mark sure they ran hard for one quarter then they were sluggish as fuck for the rest of the game
none of them used it game day that’s what people say to discredit the premiership it would be easy to tell if they were on it they would’ve been full tweaking and he runs harder in the second half because of all the conditioning training and sprints he would do to get him in peak shape
good on u ben cousins. to hope that atleast one life is changed through all of this makes it all worthwhile. Every day is a struggle and all we can do is hope that our children r learning from our mistakes. To the media, u can all b blamed for portraying Ben in sucj a negative light no matter watvthe circumstance. compassion and education wld/wldv gone such a long way in his recovery. for those who do not understand real addiction, how about doing some real research b4 u comment in a negative way.
Cousins is a bad fucking drug addict. Nothing to do with the media. They guys a fucking lose cannon. Media? Compassion? LOL. Cousins has been given compassion over & over again and has repaid it with guess what? More drug abuse. Fuckoff.
I see Benny at the daycare picking up his kid every now and then, spoken to him. He's an ordinary nice guy, really genuine and polite, talks to all the other parents. If you didn't know who he was you would have no idea what kind of life he's been living.
TheGuiltyThorn yeah his step daughter goes to my school and her son just started kindy(2 Year’s ago) me and my friends go around and have a chat with him and he’s really chill and polite, sad he did this to himself
Seems like a lot of ppl got rich from him playing well (manager, afl)....n its like as long as he was performing, ppl were willing to overlook the drugs. Its like they were enablers, inadvertedly. His fam seem like good ppl, feel for them...n it was up to Ben to do the right thing by them.
Oh Ben,😢why continue to self destruct ?mate I don't really get into footy but I do have addictive behaviours and I know certain things numb the pain the anger the emotional roller coaster thru hell with the demon's in your mind taunting you and suicide is kept distracted while you are numb. What happend with Chris isn't your fault.... The club let you down, enormously.
John Smith I was getting ready to roast you then I scrolled down and read that comment about you admitting you were wrong...first time I’ve ever seen someone with enough honour to do that....respect brother 👏🏼
Ah Benny, you are only Human! Having an Addictive Personality, means you will always struggle between the good & the bad. Sadly, the struggle will be there for Life
Watching this right now and I cry 😔 A child sports prodigy with no anonymity in a crazy football state. Seemingly all too available is the attraction of elite football as his father says, paradoxically it becomes Bens ultimate challenge. But I agree mostly with all the medical pros now and my understanding of drug use and addiction. His brain is probably beyond repair, therefore his reality is distorted physiologically only to sustain the high needed to function. Incredible consumption in his admittance has to be absolute hell. His life will end in tragedy. I love you Ben 💕 Thank you for the years of brilliance even though I now I somehow feel complicit in your public demise as you did well , we loved you and were quickly to dismiss you when another incident occurred as the years of drug abuse took it's toll. I hope too you find the boy in you enough to dig deep to find peace healing, love, strength wherever you go in your life.
Its sad seeing Ben now, I know hes on the straight and narrow but he looks 60 years of age and his demeanor now is bizzare to say the least hes a real weirdo like Warwick Capper became later on..... And to think if he didnt do drugs he would've definitely been a dual brownlow medalist and if he didn't get caught he wouldve been the first five time Brownlow winner and wouldve singlehandedly took Sydney to a dozen consecutive Grand final wins coked out and meth'd up to the gills 😂😂🤣 YTB
Tren and Jerry's Fitness he’s an addict, do you not understand the concept of it? Especially since he’s an obsessive compulsive person who really doesn’t everything to extremes. The guy will forever be one
He never used performance enhancing drugs. If anything, the drugs ben took would have negatively affected his skill on the pitch. Which shows how much skill benny possessed
He is a legend to be able to take drugs that waste his body and mind then be able to counter act that with crazy training at the elite level in sport is amazing. Not to mention the brillant level of AFL he performed at.
My crows got beat 9/11 to follouk Judd double fuk cousins fuk mty family a fukn lot like fuk Daniel kerr also fuk fuk fuk ,,,fuuuuuuuuuuuuuk oh yeah to drug cheeetahs fhaaagz
“Narcissism can be considered a pattern of addiction. That is, narcissism may not be a lifelong personality trait in the usual sense but rather a pattern of yielding to inner urges in a way that proves costly and self-destructive-not unlike other, more familiar addictions”
Who cares. He’s a spoilt privileged self entitled fckwit who’s Never done it tough a day in his life. He brought everything on himself for no reason. He’s never had problems like the average Joe. Who gives a toss if he can kick a football, like wowwwww well done bro. Goes to show how you value human beings when you give a fraction of a shit how someone kicks a ball when they’re the lowest of low drug riddled piece of crap oxygen thief
it's actually fucking depressing because you see him as a kid and then he was playing football then drugs his time being captain gone his friends gone if he didn't do this crap he probably could've been there with judd, carrey, locket, ablett all these legeneds but now he is a bloody lost cause because of his drug addiction but in some ways this is evidence that drugs ruin your life and everyone around you hopefully he is better but he could have been a all time great if it wasn't for drugs
All true, but he’s literally been doing amazing for the past 24 months lol. Footy media of 7news perth, attending Brownlow, playing in charity matches, has job, gf, apartment, contract with kids.
Ya all fuck wits ! Let him do a humain thing and get some mental health support ! Then the abuse of drugs will go, and if he is suffering from something from his upbringing and his current life, them he can be looked after the right way. As he seems to be doing !
Too much responsibility, freedom and fame at too young of an age. He needs to take personal responsibility for his actions but the West Coast Football Club have to take some responsibility also they literally put too much pressure and responsibility on him
The problem is that drugs change the structure of the brain to the point that you don’t care about anything in the world accept for that drug. It’s kind of like gambling drunk 😵
Very very gifted, an incredible athlete, but the demons of addiction got the better of him...he's made incredible inroads to get to where he is now, and that would have taken a monumental effort.
I have always loved and admired Ben, not only for his incredible talent but also his good looks and outgoing personality. I still shed a tear whenever I watch this documentary, if only because Ben could have been stronger, avoiding the temptation of indulging in illicit use of drugs. I wish you well, mate.
Mate, just do a turn on dancing with the stars, or love island or whatever other shit is going on in the media and take up a commentary job. worked for Wayne Carey - if that dog can get work on channel 7, anyone can
In My Opinion He Is The Best Player We Have Ever Had At W.C,Better Than Juddy,Peter Matera A Close 2nd.......Ben Had It All Looks,Talent,WA Football Royalty.......It Was As If It Was Too Good To Be True.......It Sometimes Takes Years To Outgrow The Drugs,As Of Late 2018 He Is Struggling......I'm Betting He Wins In The End.
for the record i nearly ran over ben cousins im may 2016...in a perth suburb...standing in the middle of the road...drugged out ! he looked like a scarecrow.
Glad we got that on the record. Would not want that to not be on the record. 2000 years from now history will thank you for putting that on the record.
i have known so many ppl struggling wth addiction. its so sad. these poor ppl hVe really strugggled. and still are. the public really needs to be educated . unfortunately we all see so much negative in the news whilst the uneducated has no idea of the struggles within a person battling addiction. just a little understanding. what if it was ur father ur brother ur best mate ? come on guys seriously. think of how he feels. a champion battling addiction in the spotlight. do yas really feel nothing
The problem is that this whole thing is predicated on a lie. Ben was never serious about rehab. I doubt he's ever been clean for more than a month. This doco presents a completely altered version of that.
Reid Alldabooks may have read all the books, clearly didnt watch all the doco. Or if you did forgot to switch the brain on. He loved the drugs. He admits it. Dumbass.
Reid Alldabooks I see your point! I agree and his cockiness says it all. I will always support him as I’m an ex meth addict myself but enough is enough! The guy is 40 now and back in prison. I couldn’t imagine going through my rehabilitation in the public eye! I wish him well and I hope to see more supportive comments from people
How quickly everyone so quickly and wrongly passes judgement on Ben and anyone else. Shame on you all. Addiction is a personal battle not a public one. Ben was sucked into the evil vortex many public figures fall into. Instead of crucifying addicts and passing judgement on them, show compassion and give them encouragement to beat their habit. Don't you realise they are tortured enough seeing their lives being destroyed. Cut him a break and cut all addicts a beak. No one wakes up in the morning and decides to be an addict and destroy their lives. If you want to be angry at someone be angry at the drug dealers and makers as they fuel addicts. Best wishes to a recovery Ben, you have the heart of a lion inside you
An AFL great forever! Well done Benny! I remember seeing u and meeting u in a seedy scene or social circle end of 99 in subi, before all the hype- sometimes you can’t help what your surrounded with. Take care
10 years on and this clown still hasn’t learnt a thing, deserves zero sympathy, even west coast tried t9 stick by him and he dogged them. Dragging his family through this, wha5 an embarrassment of a human, shameful
Addiction is a disease & more awareness should be taken out.....as for Ben I guess a warrior among his demos......i like the kid....hope he's doing good now....AFL is ONLY a money machine but it was courageous of the Tigers to throw him a life line....never like footy....or drugs.Good doc
