Ben is phenomenal. Loved this song when it came out and still do, but only discovered this cover last week. His interpretation of it is melancholy and full of hope and defeat and it’s just perfect. If anyone hasn’t seen it, seek out Ben playing Cath but solo acoustic. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful.

Another stunning reimagination by Ben Gibbard, I saw this in my timeline and was wondering how the hell a male piano/vocal version of this song could work but he kills it.

Wow, beautiful but felt like the opposite direction of Alvvays - whereas the lyrics themselves ride a line of heartache and longing, Alvvays' music gives it a playful lift. Gibbard rides out the melancholy of those lyrics. Heartbreakingly beautiful.

Excellent, Excellent.Thanks for your reimagining of the "Canadian National Anthem." Mr.Gibbard does an excellent job with his phrasing. His solo piano adds a starkness to a an already minalmist song.

I've performed originals on piano, and that intimate detail as well as the personalization of it instantly transports me to heartfelt talent show performances. The artist is a prism through which light separates into colors. If you listen to Alvvays' version you get happiness and joy, a vast, cool, sunny experience. If you listen to this guy's you get depression, misery, great grief and despair.

This was on the first mixtape that quite possibly the love of my life sent me... Recently, I decided we should just be friends because of our situation... But we are both so in love with one another... we always talked about how we always had to keep contact... We couldn't completely break contact. We're best friends. We always would be. He essentially broke off our friendship yesterday... Or at least said he wouldn't text me for a while... Because of the situations we are both in... he felt like he was holding me back from being with someone who could completely be there for me... We knew each other for 3 months... I remember hearing this song for the first time on the mixtape he sent me... My heart swelled as I realized that this guy that I was so into, did infact feel the same... I couldn't believe my luck... How did I get so lucky to meet him? He feels so deeply for me... How can someone so beautiful feel this deeply for me? I have no idea how I'm going to get over him, and quite honestly I don't want to... I hope he really meant it when he said I wouldn't hear from in a while and hopefully that means not forever, and we can be friends again... All these years of searching... And I found you... I finally felt complete... But it was more than that. You made me see the beauty in myself. It wasn't this obsession with trying to please you. It was more I liked who I was when I was with you. I looked into your eyes, and I saw my reflection and through your viewpoint, I could see my own beauty. We met at the wrong time in our lives... Perfectly matched puzzle pieces... Interestingly, on the 2nd "hey" of the chorus, Ben is singing half a step down from the original, which gives it its much more meloncholy vibes. He sings E - B (in whatever key this is) while the original is B - G (in A major). If the original matched Ben, then it would be B - F# !

I don’t know why, but I’ve always interpreted this song tragically. Like a divorced wife recalling when she married her husband in the days when they were young. Or a widow who is recalling the days when her husband was alive and asked to marry her. Now he’s dead and she mourns.

I love this in exactly the way I love Julien Baker's covers (which is quite a lot, but specifically: taking melancholy lyrics that are generally sung upbeat and doing it in a way that really draws attention to the melancholy). Which -- I know they've collabed and it makes sense.
