We have free borders in UK. We move between England Scotland Wales and N Ireland. We have our own Shengan area? I rather liked the EU shengan area but you do need almost super conyrol at the Shengan area borders and that is where it has failed because there has to be universal agreement between countries on people entering because you cannot have one weak border. I drove across europe to Italy in 2019. It wasn,t quite Shengan the German Austrian border and visa versa and the Austrian Italian border and visa versa when we were checked so there were borders within the Shengan area. Open borders between countries is not necessarily a silly idea but the countries need to be in harmony with each other.
