Ben's book ("5 Lessons...") brought me almost immediately from shooting in the 90's to shooting in the 80's, and my handicap went to 10 with 6 months. The drawing showing him standing with a pane of glass though his neck to the ball, and the idea of keeping your swing path under the glass, especially helped me.
Amazing how often this tip comes up from the best players, often something even they learn later in life, see Gary Player and Tom Watson as fine examples of that.
"Isn't that simple? Anyone can do that" Love it! Sure, give me a 1 iron on the 18th at Merion, slight downhill lie to an elevated green while tied for the lead at the US Open.
You can see that once he takes a full swing his elbows come off his body! Jack Nicklaus had a fying elbow and did pretty well with it. Still, Hogan's was one of the greatest swings in the history of the game!
I’ve picked up golf 6 mos ago and I’m learning that there are mental barriers in this game and one that I just over came today is being able to swing hard and full with my driver ex my average club head speed is 76 to 86 mph hitting a ball but 101 to 107 swinging in at nothing I just figured out today that I can swing fast at the ball 😂 so he’s right it is that simple.
Through years and years and years of practice, Hogan gives us a very simple shortcut. Use it. It works. The beginner will benefit the most. Cutting off hours upon hours upon hours of practice... Hogan hits us with the basic.. it works .
Anyone can do it! I read an article in a golf publication where they interviewed 3 tour pros, asking them 5 random questions like: Favorite activity when not playing golf, best city to visit on tour, etc. The reporter asked: "Can you turn an 18-handicap player into a scratch golfer?". They all replied "Absolutely". Turn the 18 handicapper into a tour caliber player? No. But scratch? Yes.
I saw something recently where they put Hogan’s swing on the swing analyzer somehow and recorded his driver swing at 133 mph. I think in his heyday Tiger was averaging about 118mph.
Fake news. Tiger swings at around 128 to 130 mph. It's well documented. He's arguably the most documented golfer ever to live, very ez information to find out.
would Hogan's (or Julius Boros) swing still work on the pro tour today? It seems so different than the violent swings of Tiger or Rory. It was geared towards courses of 6800 yards, not the 7500 monstrosities of today. Even Couples' smooth swing has his hand position so high at the top of the swing, allowing for 300 yd drives. I think Sam Snead transported to the year 2020 could compete, not sure about Hogan.
Interesting discussion - did they ever measure his club head speed? Smooth is fast and being loose creates a lot of hinge which really whips through. Be fun to see him play Tiger/Rory/Bryson with his equipment!
I wouldn’t call Rory’s swing violent at all. Athletic yes, but it’s a thing of beauty. Never off balance, rhythmical and extremely accurate for such a long hitter. I think Mr Hogan would very much approve
you can watch this a million times and you still won't know what he's doing...even his 5 points book doesn't say a thing about what his actually doing.
You can see that once he takes a full swing his elbows come off his body! He wouldn't be able to take a full swing with his elbows attached to his body!
Hogan is right though: anyone _can_ do that. Anyone, that is, except the large % of 'golfers' in today's world who are a) fat and b) play once every weekend
