I was under the impression that this song was in the soundtrack of "The Walking Dead" and if that's true; whoever is in charge of the music needs a raise. This song, and "civilian" by wye oak make me feel like I'm in the zombie apocalypse with the cast of the show. They have a really talented way of picking songs that dig deeper into your emotions, and it's so amazing.

@@paulallan427 Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame would agree with you wholeheartedly. I have wished on several occasions that I had copied and pasted his words; who knew at the time. A brutal paraphrasing would read something like: Artists provide a kind of framework for those listening to it - in this case, to make additional sense of their journey, experience, life. GOD I wish I had stopped to collect his words. I have been a fan of Led Zeppelin since that year when they were the top act in the world - 1975. Prior to reading the words I try to speak of here, I was absolutely unaware of the man’s philosophical depth. I digress…. Song honestly hits me like a runaway freight train, all I could do is put down my tools, sit down in my chair and cry. This song playing when Hershel had overcome all odds and saved his son in law, among others, by going I to a place to help he knew there was a great chance he woukdnt walk out of, made me fully appreciate what a great man he was. I'm just now rewatching TWD for the first time all the way through, so I hadnt seen this since it premiered on television. When I heard it this time around I realised it was his swan song

There is such a deep understanding and arrangement of the world in this song that with each note the song captures more and more. The incredible wisdom of each word and the choice of each note are striking. The mood of the song is very disturbing, but at the same time calm, the lyrical hero seems to have a sense of humility with what is happening, a clash of human feelings, a complete contrast of emotions, a completely calm tone and mood are conveyed. I just want to hug and endlessly sympathize with the author, if he really experienced such a mood. With what understanding and as if looking from the outside, filled with the world, the author conveys his feelings through music. Against the backdrop of the black and white sea and rocks, the mood of the song is perfectly visualized. Under it, you just want to escape, go into yourself, get away from everything, leave civilization and become a hermit. The song and video are simply amazing with beauty and aesthetics. The song is perfect in every way. Moderately sad, moderately calm, moderately exciting. Such masterpieces should attract much more people - inspire, make sad, make you think. People from all over the world experience such emotions every day, feeling lonely, lost and weak. The song is perfect to help you understand yourself and get back on your feet. Ben Howard is truly a genius of our time. I am incredibly grateful and express immense respect to the author of this masterpiece

What are people's interpretation of the line "There's coke in the Midas touch"? Seems like an interesting metaphor. The "Midas touch" is of course referring to the story of King Midas turning everything he touches into gold. And "coke" may be referring to the drug cocain's additive qualities. My guess about the line is it's pointing to a parallel between addiction and wealth obsession in an interesting way. I think the song is about human existence in general. Nice song, and very well placed within The Walking Dead.
@majordonley
@majordonley 10 лет назад
by coke, he isnt speaking of the drug, he's speaking of the coal that is used in blast furnaces. It means that there are imperfections in everything.
@JimNagle87
@JimNagle87 10 лет назад
Coke is a high carbon material derived from coal and used in the process of smelting iron ore to make steel. Midas was a king in Greek mythology who turned things to gold by his touch, this of course was a curse and not a blessing because even his food and drink turned to gold and he eventually died hungry despite his wealth. In gold smelting, coke is not normally used as it would be an impurity in the gold. "Coke in the Midas touch" is a metaphor possibly meaning that there is a cost to comfort and riches. This metalurgical metaphor is consistent with the next line which says "a joke in the way we rust." Again, rust destroys, just as coke would ruin the purity of gold. It is therefore, unlikely that the word "coke" refers to cocaine as the language of metaphor convincingly points to it referring to the coke used in smelting.
@Dem212
@Dem212 10 лет назад
Joe Donley Good point, and I like that interpretation too. I did know that usage of the term, but although I can't claim to know much about metallurgy I didn't think it was used in gold production. Also isn't coke intentionally added, and not really an impurity in the result? But regardless I can see the metaphor there.
@Dem212
@Dem212 10 лет назад
Jamesmn87 Yeah that is a good point. I just never considered that usage of the term "coke" being related to gold. But regardless, that does make sense in a metaphorical way. The line about rust does certainly support that, as pure gold doesn't rust, the "coke" being the "joke."
@Barendsen2
@Barendsen2 10 лет назад
Dem212 I think its a metaphor about everything having a price. You need coke to make steel, Midas' touch was a blessing and a curse at the same time. The following line "a joke in the way we rust" also shows that it may be metallurgic in nature. Rusting is of course decaying, so probably getting older. So, the way I interpret it is: "Theres always a hidden cost to everything, and we only really know that when we get older". But who knows man.
