Ben-Hur was adopted as the son of Arrius. Once a slave and now heir to his father's inheritance. This is a perfect example of what Apostle Paul was sharing would happen to the slaves/orphans of Rome through Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:15)
This movie rates with a selected few as theatrical masterpieces in every way. Timeless, in its costumes, casting, acting, directing, stages, and story.
Great scene, I was so happy that Arrius and Judah became close especially when they got off on the wrong foot earlier in the film when Arrius damned near killed Judah when he was at the oars (RAMMING SPEED!!!).
A multitude of powerful scenes in this epic. Arius knew from the start that there was something about “41” Judah should have had this number on the licence plate of his chariot lol...a great way for the Judean to honor his adopted father..🙂
Knowing Roman law, the Apostle Paul understood once one was adopted that adoption was final and could never be revoked. As adopted sons and daughters of the Most High we cry, Abba Father. Shalom and Maranatha!!
Slappy, is your" ship "you sail it ANY WHICH WAY. ANY THING THAT MAY GIVE YOU HAPPINES, IS YOUR PREROGATIVE ( BUT SEEMS YOU MUCH RATHER BE BITTER,NOTHING ANY BODY CAN DO ABOUT,NEITHER BUDIST JEWISH ,GENTILE,OR MUSLIM. AND THAT'S perfectly fine with the entire universe.
@Charles Ross That ended in 70 AD with the fall of Jerusalem, the Roman destruction of the Temple and the scattering of the Jewish people. The Jews of today are not the Jews of old, they no longer make a sacrifice to the Lord, Christ's death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice for sin, anyone who accepts Him as Savior, is a temple of God, a citizen of the new Jerusalem.
One reason Rome became great. If you adopted its ways and followed its laws, you could become a Roman citizen too...no matter where you were from. Remind you of any country today?
If you watch very carefully, in a previous scene aboard the ship where Arrius offers to make Judah one of his gladiators, they have this exchange: Arrius: "It's a strange, stubborn faith your people keep, to believe that existence has a purpose. A sane man would have learned to lose it long ago." Judah: "As you have. What drove it out of you?" Now, right after Judah says that, there's a film cut, and Arrius just says, "Go back to your oar, Forty-One." With this scene for context, I believe that scene was originally longer, with Arrius telling Judah about the loss of his own son. If so, I wish that scene could be put back.
@@janviljoen7001 Unfortunately, they didn't make Director's Cuts back then, it was probably left on the cutting room's floor before someone swept up and took out the trash.... (Sad)
@@timengineman2nd714Well, this was long before any kind of home video, so there was no market for an extended cut. Some cut footage from classic movies was saved, but as you pointed out, most of it was just thrown away. ☹️
I love this version instead of the recent version that came out a few years ago. Mark Burnett and Roma Downey took out this major piece of Judah Ben Hur's Character development.
I would have seriously liked to have seen Judah Ben-Hur's relationship with the Roman girl who was on his arm. She must have been an important daughter of some noble Roman, with a stunning looking mother as well. I am sure he would have fit well into the Roman culture. But, he was staying true to his roots which were imprisoned back where he grew up.
THE MOVIE "BEN-HUR" WILL EVER BE FOREVER -TIMELESS!!( I AM 72 YRS). MY FIRST GLIMPSE , BEEN TAKING TO THE CINEMA AGED 10YRS. WITH ONE'S FAMILY.AND GOT HOOKED !!! SEEN IT MILLIONS OF TIMES !!! HAVE THE D.V.D. AND IT SEE'S DAY LIGHT SOMETIMES !!!! WHEN I DO ITS VERY REFRESHING LIKE SEEING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME !! R.I.P. TO ALL THE CAST & CREW & THE MOUGHULS WHO MADE THE MOVIE !!! FROM U.K. (2021). AN EPIC OF EPICS !!!!
The chariot race is what many look to as the great scene of this epic. But there are many deep scenes. Another favorite is when Ben Hur is a slave and is lead along with other slaves and they come to Nazareth. Jesus whose face we don't see gives Ben Hur water after the nasty centurion says no water for Ben Hur. When the centurion turns to yell at Jesus, he can't yell; he's angry, dumbfounded, ashamed then he turns away. And the cup never runs out of water.
One of the things I liked about this movie is that not all Roman characters are straight up bad guys. Arrius was introduced as a hard man who despite all he achieved was effectively a broken one, he had lost his son and loat his faith, not only in his gods but himself. He had accepted his fate, expecing to die in battle, only to encounter a jewish slave who despite all he had endured had managed to hold on to the very thing he abandoned. When he was to die, that same slave saved his life and forced him to live despite a desire not to. In doing so he showed him that hope and faith still had value, now we see him here humbled, his faith restored and as he said, feeling a love and pride he had long lost. A Roman, and a high ranking one at that, adopted a Jew and former slave as his son, something I imagine would have been a controversal decision in Roman society and yet he does it and it is well recieved.
Olha que cena impressionante, quando o General dá o anel para Ben-Hur, ele ainda desce um degrau para se equiparar a ele. Maravilhosa cena, pura percepção do diretor do filme.
These movies are truely landmark movies ! even a few of such movies are all that humanity needs not the thousands of stupid movies produced every year !
I don't believe there is one single scene, line, or performance in this masterpiece that is less than perfection. This has to be Wlliam Wyler & Cecil B. DeMille's best legacy, ever!
If I'm correct Dad got to meet Jack Hawkins while he filmed in New Zealand. He stayed at the same hotel as Dad and my grandparents; apparently they had breakfast together each day of their stay. A lovely fellow to talk to was Dad's memory of him.
If I remember, Judah and his family and Esther rebuilt their palace in Jerusalem, while retaining the rights and protections a Roman citizen gave to Judah. He was considered far wealthier than the emperor, and used his holdings to help the nascent church.
Superlative portrayal of history in motion picture. One must see this film before dying. Unfortunately Hollywood lost the golden rhythm after these magnum Opera and lost in slapstick entertainers like Jamesbond and other erotic kind of movies. But this was the period of sunshine. You are directly exported to the Roman era as it was made 2500 years ago. Today's generation must see to make one like this!
The Romans were not the bastards, as some people would like to believe us! They behave intelligent, civilized, as a human being with a sophisticated civilization! As you can see here, the consul Qintus Arrius give help for Judah to flee from the ship, but he helped the consul in need, and finally save his life! After this great event the Roman consul adopted him as his own son, and give him all of his property!
Tiberius Caesar , yep 👍, it was Pontious Pilate as the Roman procurator of the province of Judea, by whose sklillful maneuvering, Jesus escaped from death by crucifixion. Pilate was too clever and bold in providing a safe passage to Jesus while beguiling the masses as his soldiers furthered the rumour of Jesus’s ascension to the Heavans. Very smart move by Pilate 10/10☝️
As a Roman citizen the Apostle Paul knew Roman law well ....When one is adopted under Roman law that adoption can not be revoked....It is forever...The Sprit of Adoption that cause the believer to cry out Abba Father is also forever and far more powerful...
In that story, Ben-Hur is just likeable man. Everywhere he goes. And even that wasn't enough to stop abuse and war. There is a dark element preventing the world for being truly happy. Selfishness. The message of that movie is pretty clear to me.
The Apostle Paul said people would be "lovers of themselves" in the time of the end....he put it at the top of his list describing last days at 2Tim 3...exact opposite of what Jesus said to do: Love your heavenly father and love your Neighbor(others/not self)
Amen!".
Most tellings treat Pontius Pilate as a villain. This movie treats him more like he was, a reluctant civil servant enforcing laws because he had to. The actor that plays him, Frank Thring, always reminds me of Vincent Price. He did a number of these sand & sandals movies.
diese wohl teuerste, aufwendig produzierte und zugleich bewegenste Verfilmung eines wunderbaren "Märchens" war, ist und bleibt meine unverrückbare Nummer 1 (!)
I’ve always believed in the movie Ben-Hur that at the end of the movie he should have left And went back to Rome and live out his new life with his adopted father after sorting out his business and affairs and obtaining revenge and never giving back the ring.
Me too and I know very well that the Consul would have received Juda's mother and sister in a good way, he would have continued to gain honor and fame for his Father and everyone would have lived happily, Who knows even the Consul could have fallen in love with his mother, she was very pretty before becoming a leper and also a lady of great fortune and good manners hahaha
Pontius Pilate accurately portrays the environment regarding prophets at the time ("the holy prophets can't get on without me.") This is critical when addressing the historicity of Jesus, because while we have records of men that bear similarities to the person described in The Bible, the reality is that the business of being a prophet was a sort of streetcorner, dime-a-dozen business at the time. It was almost a joke by that time. People have this idea of this one person stepping out as a prophet, but the person of Jesus is smeared out across several people. This is due to Judaism's concept of a Messiah overlapping with Roman dictatorship, with many citizens assuming it was the Roman's that the Messiah was supposed to overthrow. This lead to many, many opportunists and cults in Judea. It there is no mystery why some Jesus-like character would inevitably emerge from such a political climate.
Pseudo-intellectuals on RU-vid are dime-a-dozen. There was no smorgasbord of "prophets" made into a single fictional person since Tacitus directly mentions Jesus.
@@Tempusverum He mentions a trial of such a person whom he did not directly observe. Furthermore, a composite of people's experiences with prophets seems more likely when people attempted to write on Jesus after the fact of his death. Was there some dude named Jesus that could have been a prophet? Probably, as as there is someone now named Jésus. When we talk about a historical Jesus, such a person would have to have several of those accounts he is given credit for verified. It's an almost impossible task to be sure, which is why I am speaking from what is more likely. And I admit you are correct about RU-vid, that we could scarcely find a time where we weren't bombarded with scores of false "prophets" trying to sell us snake oil.
