Not so much chosen for musical content, but because of the long spaces between phrases and major volume drops. Shame it isn't more EQ'd, this'd the ultimate stress test for a PCM unit otherwise.

I don't usually comment on Ben's videos, but I just have to now. Like Ben, dude, this is already my favorite song of yours. Its something so chill, I love it. 😌

I love seeing music visualized like this. It's like a Betamax version of the Atari Video Music. The older the gear, the better. I'd comment on your videos more if RU-vid didn't always eat my comments.

I have a real love for the consumer/ pro-sumer PCM units which came about quite by accident when someone asked me to repair a Sony PCM-F1. Several units later and a lot of tapes created and I love this format. I have an L-830 full of audio which I use to test repaired decks and it's completely fine. The Sony system is amazing and so resilient. Your PCM-701 may well just be dirty relay contacts - I've had a few like this and taking the top off the relay and carefully cleaning the contacts makes the whole deck good again. The electronics is generally very reliable. I do have a playlist of the PAL/SECAM units being tested and repaired. Only the PAL/SECAM units have their signal format printed on the front so if you see a PCM unit with no TV format on the front panel then it'll be NTSC. Great video (as always) and thank you for sharing such great kit.

@@OddityArchive Hey Ben, I have a quick inquiry: How did you come up with the name "S.B.U. Music?"
@OddityArchive
@OddityArchive 2 года назад
@Tornado1994 It was a nod to Jackson Browne. His first (released) album was unofficially called "Saturate Before Using"--I just grabbed the initials.
@Tornado1994
@Tornado1994 2 года назад
@@OddityArchive Cool! I didn't know you were into Jackson Browne! I just looked it up, and yes his '72 Self Titled Album is called "Saturate Before Using" because its a fake warning label mistakenly placed on the very Top Header of the Cover because Browne wanted it to resemble a Water Bag. My personal favorite song from him is 1983's "Lawyers In Love" do you have a personal favorite of his that sometimes inspires you?

I enjoy the composition as such, as well as the accompanying PCM visualisation... but the way the instruments are (de)tuned, or rather out of tune w eachother, really makes me slightly seasick.

I'd be curious to know more about the video. What are we seeing exactly?
@ExperimentIV
@ExperimentIV 2 года назад
i could be wrong and im not the best person to explain it, but i think ben encoded digital audio as video to record it on a tape, then played it back using another beta vcr instead of one with a decoder, then dubbed the music back over? i could be EXTREMELY incorrect or partially incorrect but im sure that the encoding audio to video to store it on a cassette is correct
@ExperimentIV
@ExperimentIV 2 года назад
it could be audio and video playback from the same vcr though! i don’t know anything about the sony pcm-701es though, outside of the fact that it’s obviously a vcr that records pcm audio to tape. that process was used to master a lot of cds back in their infancy
@iykiyki
@iykiyki 2 года назад
There used to be some devices which record and playback digital audio with video cassettes. If you play the cassette in a regular VCR, it would show stuff like this. You can get more information in Techmoan's video though it is a VHS machine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WVDCxTtn4OQ.html I don't know if there were Betamax version of such devices, but the pictures looks similar to it.

50fps deinterlaced will be cool
@OddityArchive
@OddityArchive 2 года назад
I tried 59.94fps (remember, this is NTSC) with my Cloner box (with the intent of replacing the audio with an uncompressed copy after the fact), but even at the highest setting, everything devolved into a blocky, pixelated mess. This was the best I could do.

No need for deinterlacing because PCM video is already progressive
