I've been chasing a bottle of this for years! And now I've got my chance.
Ben Nevis lays forgotten. Amongst whisky nerds and indie bottle chasers it is a 'must have'. But for the regular drinkers in the world, it just isn't around. Is it a small place? Yes. Is distribution a little halted? Possibly. Either way, chase this stuff because it is honestly very good bang for your buck.
There's a funkiness to this product which I've only ever experienced once before in a Whisky Shop Exclusive Loch Lomond. But with that funk is a sweet and earthy palate of dark chocolate, cream, heather honey and a soft toffee'd start. Honestly get some, it is rather good and worth the attention.

It definitely has a chocolate orange note so there's some sherry in it. Personally, I think it's as good as the Springbank 10. A little less refined but I'm not complaining. I had the old bottling as well as the, even better, cask strength 10. I remember them being 'dirtier' (more funk) which I think means more sherry. However, somebody told me the latest 10 is the same recipe. I don't know. Cheers Phil.

Finally got to try them side by side with John Drinks, and yes, the old one is significantly funkier and dirtier. Retried the new 10 last night and the crisp apple note on the nose is wonderful. Will easily buy it again.

2017-2020 Ben Nevis 10 is probably the peak of Ben Nevis for me. 1990s vintages are very tropical fruit forward but lack the funk that this specific 2017-2020 era has which makes it absolutely phenomenal whisky in my mind.

Lucky enough to have tried alot of 1996 releases, all so fruit forward. The rest have always been filthy.

I bought my Ben Nevis 10 from the distillery late August. Every time I have a dram I find something new! Lots of flowers, herbs and spices. Lemon drizzle cake. The finish is dry and briny. Adding a teaspoon of water makes a real difference too. I love the complexity it has - a whisky the makes you work hard to explore the palate. I find I close my eyes and think really hard when I drink it. An absolute must try for whisky nerds!

Couldn't agree more! I don't know what magic happens in their stills and washbacks, but this is one of the most complex and unique single malts on the planet.

I've been through a couple of the older version bottles, and I absolutely loved it. It's got that crunchy bar honey comb taste which is really unique.

Unique is certainly a word for it. Hoping less is shipped to Japan now and bottled as this style or even older.

Stop it. I am intrigued to see how the new stacks against the old. That's always fun. As for the redesign - I don't hate it, it's very clean, similar to how Aultmore present themselves - I almost feel they missed a trick not leaning into the gaudy look of the old one and going very bold.

All the Ben's have gone with this very simple white washed approach. I like the old labels, they've just got more character to them. Made the distillery really come across like something from land that time forgot.

I have on older bottling of this one and its one of my favorites I found it covered in dust in a trendy wine store and I love it there is some sulphur stuff going on and a lot more.

Ben Nevis, Clynelish and Springbank. The holy trinity. Went a bit crazy buying 1996 Ben Nevis a year ago. Who needs new clothes when you can drink well at home in your PJs.....

Listening to this (Ben Nevis 10) review for the third time. This time, with said dram in hand. Interesting that yours and ralfy’s latest opinions are poles apart. It was however, your review that persuaded me to try a brand I’d never had, but was keen to experience. Glad I did. I’m experiencing all but the “petrol forecourt” notes - but I’m not sorry about that. Thanks for the review, and thanks for the encouragement.

Had my hand on the old bottling today actually, been on the list for years just haven't got around to it, been on the Springbank and Ledaig train for too long I guess. If you like Springbank, don't pass on Ben Nevis. It's the only distillery I rank higher than SB, personally. I suspect you'll like it.

Tried this the other week, liked it. However the Ben Nevis 10 OB I had prior to this 2021 re-release was for me notably more striking, funky, lovely and sherried. If they were to bring back the magic of the previous bottling (and tell me about it) I wouldn't hesitate to buy a full bottle. Slightly frustrating.

Still awaiting to try this mythical OG OB, it eludes me. This stuff is good, if Ben Nevis opened a decande ago and released this, I'd be pleased.
