I love how colbert realizes that his guest is nervous and talking too fast and starts talking extra slow himself to slooooow everything down. He is helping his unexperienced guest in a very respectful way. Nice one Stephen.
Colbert also goes in and closes the gap, and just looks at him in his eyes as to isolate the guest and the host, like its just the two of them having a conversation with the audience to calm him down and get him settled in the new environment.
Jill Howlter I understand though, cause I talk fast too haha. I try to go slower, but I get so excited or whatever, and it just all comes spewing out at an incredible speed lol
Broadway people are just the best :'D (I think Lin-Manuel Miranda is the ULTIMATE ray of sunshine, but Ben comes close too- he's so adorable and such a sweetie ^__^)
I like your sentiment, and agree that MANY Broadway performers are what you say. HOWEVER, there are (and have been in the past), indeed, some that go in the other direction.
Zoe H Okay, at first I thought you were referring to something elsewhere like "Oh yeah, he came out (of the closet)," but like he did it to waving through a window. I was about to ask where you find it 😂
I worked for an Audio-Visual company and we did tons of sound for musicians, comedians, performers at events. I noticed that a lot of phenomenally talented people are not that big a deal in their own eyes: they can always be better. Then there are the egomaniacs who believe every compliment paid them.
Platt is quoting a story Colbert told about meeting his wife, that he told earlier in the show. Thus the audience and Stephen go "Awwwwww" it shows Platt was listening. "God sent me a sneeze." ~ Stephen Colbert 2017
Oh that's right, I remember watching that story. How cool of Ben to reference it in the interview, what a clever dude.. And either way, it's a great quote :D
"I would like to show them a sort of come-to-Jesus moment, but I'm a Jew, so it's more like a come-to-Moses moment." Ah. God sent you an _amazing, technicolor dreamcoat!_
His adrenaline is so high right now from the nervousness that he thinks he is talking at a normal speed. I wonder what his reaction was when he watched himself on TV.
Hammad Ali he kind of always talks like this, it's not the tv adrenaline it's just how he talks. although, playing a character who speaks very quickly 8 times a week cannot be a good contribution to that
+Sparklemotion101 Ummm not so sure about that- there's a video floating around where he talks about his first breakup and pretty distinctly refers to said ex as "he" :) Plus, not to abide strictly by stereotypes, but he IS pretty unabashedly a giant Judy Garland fanboy and huge musical theater nerd, so just saying it's not super *surprising* if he is indeed not straight xD Not that any of that has to do with how fast he talks though lol- that's just him! Or, yes, perhaps something he's picked up from playing Evan for so long. I'm always amazed at how he can maintain such good diction while talking so fast though! haha.
Akindal89 not only does it help with the sound but you can use the emotions and project them on to your singing which makes the song 10x more powerful!
I can relate to his 50 "uhs" a second and talking fast all when nervous but seriously he must have picked up some of evans habits from doing so many shows for so long
Ben Platt could not have responded better, to what Stephen does for us all, (what he does for my husband & myself every night) then that. Perfectly accurate compliment. Here, here. #MyLateNightTherepySessions #LaughingThroughTheMadness #IfIDidNotLaughThenIWouldCry
Wow what a great interview just love your honesty why are people so rude as to talk while the show is on I don't get it anyway good on your for getting them back really hope to see the show one day please bring it to the uk 👍
"Go see it"......YOU DON'T THINK I'VE BEEN TRYING FOR FOREVER???? Tickets are sold out, premium and resale tickets are too expensive and I always lose the lottery 😩😭 one day! I just hope the OBC sticks around till April 2018 bc I'll cry if I do get a chance to see it and it isn't the OBC UPDATE: I SAW THE SHOW THIS PAST WEEKEND AND OMG IT WAS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. TEARS WERE ROLLING DOWN TO MY NECK. THE ENTIRE CAST WAS AMAZING OMG. I was saving up for so long and bought a ticket for 4th row center orchestra and seriously it was worth it.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the original cast's contracts are up in November. After that they can choose to stay, join the national tour, or go on to other projects. But I'm sure the show will still be running and a great cast will be in place. Tickets are available at the box office every day for standing room and partial view seats - though that's just about 20 tickets so they go immediately. But if you get there early (6am) you can likely get a ticket when the box office opens at 10am.
While he is talking about sneezing on rude audience I am still sitting here trying to figure out a way how teenagers were able to afford tickets worth my whole monthly salary...
You know how some people pay money for a movie ticket when they only plan to sleep the entire time? Well, paying 100 times that amount for a Broadway ticket, and planning to just talk the entire time is equally absurd!
They were probably rich kids. Teenagers who most likely wanted to impress their dates, but have no real appreciation for Broadway and live theater decorum. They definitely didn't deserve those tickets.
I heard somewhere he started taking on too many of Evan's characteristics like his hunched posture and his way of speaking that he had to go to therapy.
I cried too but only a bit because of his beautiful voice. I cried the whole time because I suffer with anxiety and depression. Ben Platt makes me cry every time. Thank you for being a big help to me.
Does Evan Hansen talk really fast because Ben Platt does, or has Ben Platt been playing Evan so long he's picked up Evan's speedy nervous cadence of speech? We may never know.
I’ve been rewatching DEH on Behind the Curve’s channel and let me tell you, it’s gonna take me like a week to get through it cause i just keep ugly crying. No other play has ever moved me quite so much. DEH and Ben Platt’s performance particularly will always hold a special place in my heart
It’s so great to see how far Ben has come, and how comfortable he’s gotten with being on interviews. I could feel the anxiety just radiating through the screen, but now he seems a lot more like himself, and that makes me very happy.
As someone who does a lot of singing of Broadway musicals, sometimes so emotional they bring me to tears, I also have no fucking idea how he sings while crying because it just chokes me.
You are in good company. Neil Patrick Harris expressed the same amazement at Ben's ability carry a lovely tune through all that mucus. He said that if he tried to sing and cry at the same time he would sound like a goat.
Dear Mama! I have a crush on a HOT JEW who is also smart and talented. He's amazing in the movie PITCH PERFECT. Hope I'll be able to see this show with him. Congratulations darling boy.
I saw one episode of The Politician and Ben Platt's version of one of my favorite song 'River' devasted me. I've been watching and shedding tears every time. He is a force to reckon with. Authentic!
I have said the SAME THING, as Stephen did, to anyone I could. I cried at the first song and did not stop until the end! I was like a limp dishrag by the time I was walking out the Exit! Ben’s voice is ethereal!
Gah, now I really want to see this musical. I hope it gets remounted in Sydney. Also, I never get sick of guests coming on the show and just gushing about Stephen, lol.
If I won the lottery the first thing I would do is fly to NYC to see Ben Platt and the amazing, incredibly talented cast of Dear Evan Hansen. (crosses fingers, toes and everything). What a brilliant show
"I would call it a 'Come To Jesus' moment, but I'm a Jew, so it's more of a 'Come To Moses' moment... Where God sent me a sneeze." ~Ben Platt I can't stop laughing omg
