As many of you know, this is the true story of our son Ben Schultz who was an Anchorage, Alaska firefighter/paramedic when, on June 5, 2017, (at age 28) he fell 95 feet down the aerial ladder truck during a training exercise. He suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and was not expected to live through the night. By the grace of God (and an amazing medical and therapy team) he did survive the night but was in a coma for some 2+ months and in recovery for nearly a year as he learned how to once again, talk, eat, walk, drive and more. This is the story of a TBI survivor. Through this video you will see Ben's one-year miraculous recovery journey condensed into 30 minutes of still and videos as he went through physical, occupational and speech therapies at Craig Hospital in Denver and Quality Living Inc. (QLI) in Omaha. At the end you'll hear from Ben as he talks about his life, recovery and next life challenges.
We post this video with grateful hearts to God for Ben's survival. To honor all those in the medical profession and the firefighter community who fought for Ben. And for the hundreds and hundreds of people who supported us through prayer, comments, gifts, food, advice, encouragement, a shoulder to cry on, listening and just being there for us.
Please write your comments below the video to show your support. If you can use assistance or encouragment with a TBI patient, feel free to contact us through: www.SchultzPhoto.com
Each member of our family of 4 has gone through a life altering tragedy. We wrote a book: SHATTERED DREAMS...Finding Hope in Tragedy. Read the intro and first chapter FREE here: www.schultzpho...

Thank you for this amazing video. My son had a traumatic brain injury and Dr's. Gave him little hope and he suffered seizures also. As a mom I never gave up and everyone was praying. Today he has a job working at McDonald's and working on his drivers license.

My husband is currently suffering from a severe TBI and is currently in comatose. It’s been a month and 6 days and on Monday he started following commands such as hand squeezing and nodding but not consistently. Still a huge step! They mentioned a shunt is needed and will probably get it done within the next few days. I was terrified to hear the news but your story is bringing me so much hope. He is 29 years old. Thank you so much for sharing. It gives me peace. God bless.

@@doriemckay6935 he is better from where he was when I wrote this comment. He’s is walking, talking, eating. He looks completely normal from a passer by but his specific injury caused cognitive issues. He has no short term memory, though it is improving. His long term is jumbled as well as his timelines. He needs 24/7 care and having to stay with his father as I can’t care for him and out two kids but we see him very often. He will continue to get better. We were told the worst and he is miles away from where we imagined. This situation has been a nightmare but we are blessed.

My husband had a fall from our house roof also hitting a long ladder on the way down. His right frontal lobe was smashed as he hit the cement below. He also had other injuries. He has two brain surgeries & was not expected to live. A month later he miraculously woke from his coma & went on to return to his teaching career!! Praise God for miracles in Ben’s recovery as well as my husbands🙏🙏

My 19 year old niece had this TBI with multiple organ and bone/soft tissue injuries. This was during a really bad time of covid. She contracted covid multiple times. She was taken to the Sheppard's Center in GA. She did okay for awhile but her body just couldn't handle it. After days of high fevers then a high of 106, she went home with Jesus. She died on September 10, 2021. I love to see how you have dug in and with Gods grace and the love of family/friends, have come so far. Its amazing.

Just amazing! My daughter has asked me if I believe in God or science. My answer is both. I believe in us, an intelligent and ever learning and evolving species, who through education and desire to heal, uplift and change the world, can work to bring great recovery and change but I also believe in a higher power. One who looks over us and has a plan for us all. One who works through others to effect near miracles. I believe in the human spirit and it’s incredible will to beat the odds and of course our amazing bodies which we learn more and more about each day (science! Plasticity of the brain in the role of such an amazing recovery for Ben). Last but not least I believe in the power of love. It’s ability to lift us up and comfort us in our time of need. Family, friends and even a strangers offering of love can move metaphorical mountains. God bless you Ben, your family and the wonderful staff who know to never give up because there is always hope and possibility. Much love from Ireland 💚

I am amazed at Ben's story, and the long difficult INCREDIBLE recovery. He has defied all odds, and being around him and his positive happy/demeanor does not add up given the circumstances. He worked his tail off to get to where he is now. However, he could not have done any of this without the support groups that started with the firemen/paramedics on the scene immediately after the accident, and the top medical staff(s) that guided him throughout the recovery process! All of that being said, the parents, Joan and Jeff, who were taken through a marathon meat grinder, are also true heroes here. They were challenged by 30 hours of work in every 24 hour day for months/years on end! Juggling Ben and his myriad of doctor's appointments and special needs, their daughter, Hanna, with her special needs, their careers (and heavy financial obligations that were increasing), sleep deprivation, relationship with each other, etc... They have truly climbed the mountain, seen the light, and I still can't believe how they got through all of it! I think that they incorporated some help from above, because that is the only thing that makes sense!

WOW!!! I just LOVE watching this young man's recovery. LOVE THE BELIEF, COMPASSION, PERSISTENT and POSITIVE CAREGIVERS around BEN's RECOVERY. Goes to show us NOT TO JUST GIVE UP ON THOSE that have had "BRAIN INJURIES" From his father's answered prayers. GOD ANSWERED HIS PRAYERS, by putting the right people around BEN'S RECOVERY MISSION. LOVE, GOOD CARE, and the proper THERAPY people can RECOVER from this. ALL those things only help in the healing of the HUMAN BODY. Unfortunately, most brain-injured patients don't get past 2 or 3 weeks. Over 95% of DOCTORS give up on those that come into the hospital with "BRAIN INJURIES." Happy for this young man : ) Good job, Ben, keep going kid, you got this.

So inspiring to see ❤ ohne of my workmate was hitten with a Baseball bat right onto his head. He saw a few guys bothering a girl in a train station, and came over to help this girl. Then these guys hit him and ran away. In hospital, it was not sure if he can survive his severe brain injuries. A part of his scull is missing and the parts of his brain underneath was completely damaged. He survived the first days, but doctors told he would stay in a coma and maybe never wake up. But he did. Then doctors claimed, that he will never be able to walk or talk….but he recovered and is able to work fulltime again. Not in his old Job, because He has sometimes problems with his speech and with one hand and leg and some other things, but over all he lives a happy life, he married, he got his driving license back, and regained all memories. I wrote this down for anyone who prays for a loved one with brain injury. There is lots of hope, even if some doctors won‘t believe this ❤

God has really kept you , I’m so glad for your recovery. I went through several brain injuries none as severe as yours had hydrocephalus untreated for years after spinal meningitis. Lost balance, memory, strength and ended up with dementia. I thank the Lord it was treatable, doctor drilled brain and released pressure. The next day my brain was clearer, however brain swelled so I was in hospital and rehab for six weeks. So many things you had to do were the same as I went through. Shopping with therapists is still so clear. It has been three years and work out with a wonderful physical trainer. He has gotten me so strong again. By the grace of God I am well again, I do notice some deficiencies when I get over tired though. Gods continued blessing in your life.

I never comment on RU-vid videos, but I’m watching this video 3 years after its posting. As a nurse of 5 years who has worked with a significant number of patients with TBIs, I had tears of joy and shock when I saw that Ben could talk and more than that be back at his baseline with normal conversation! Thank you Jesus! Most of the patients I’ve taken care of live the rest of their days completely bed bound or wheelchair bound in a nursing home and barely progressing past the stage of broken sentences like Ben’s “Hi mom I love you” and swallowing food. The therapy he had access to was incredible, this recovery wouldn’t have happened without it - and without God designing the brain to be able to rebuild new neural pathways. I was absolutely dumbfounded as I watched Ben’s conversation at a regular consistent pace, pausing and continuing his thoughts without prompts, and he had complex facial expressions and brow wrinkling and smiles congruent with the emotion that he was expressing at each part of the sentence! I couldn’t believe it! I’d expected at the beginning of the video when it was said “living on his own” that he would be able to do basic ADLs but need to live in a home with staff to monitor and assist and drive him to appointments etc. Even if you as a family might feel discouraged at the testing results of things like multitasking and memory that were or still may be less than previous, please be encouraged from a stunned healthcare professional that the Lord has given you so many blessings through this world-class therapy that many people never ever regain in their entire lifetime!! Please Lord, bless and keep using this testimony of persevering with a suffering Savior.

Thank you for sharing this remarkable story. My son had a fall from a ladder on 7/17/2023. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, also a decompressive craniectomy, a PE, pneumonia, infection of brain fluid & colon. He also suffered a stroke of his temporal lobe from the injuries. He is 43 years old & is now in rehab thanks to the Neuro team at Nebraska Medical Center & prayers from friends & family. This video gives me hope & I thank you for sharing ❤️

Truth, faith, belief, strength and hard work. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good. He works in such mysterious ways, and he made sure Ben was surrounded by the best people possible so that he could heal slowly but surely. Family, friends, doctors, surgeons, physio's and every one else who was involved with his healing, physically, emotionally and mentally. Through all his trials and tribulations God continued to be a guiding light, be a constant support, and never leaving Bens side. I humbly thank our Heavenly Father for blessing him and healing him abundantly. This is a true testament to God's love for those who have unwavering faith and belief in his words and the gospel. Truly, truly amazing story.😊❤👍

God is still on the throne!!! I can somewhat relate to this. October, 2021,my brother-in-law was rushed to the hospital because he had a tear in his aorta, that tore allthe way down to his legs. The worst kind. For over several months, we didn't know if he would survive. My siblings and I are a "spiritual warfare" family. We started to immediately pray and come against this. February, 2022, my brother-in-law came home! He cannot work anymore, nor drive anymore but he is alive, thriving in the goodness of God! Hallelujah!

My husband is currently in ICU he is a father of 8. He was admitted and then released from one hospital diagnosed with a TIA. He was having complications breathing. I took him to the doctor the next day. They rushed him to the ER. He was doing fine after being admitted for PE in his lung. Later that night, he coded for 20 minutes resuscitated. Right now his heart is beating on its own , he has kidney damage and right side heart damage. His vitals are stable. But the doctors state there is nothing to do. He is not recoverable his brain is swelling, and he has fluid on his brain. He twitches his eye lids, and coughs with the tube . He has not opened his eyes yet. I'm still praying for health and strength

Greetings, it has been six years since my work related training incident with the Anchorage Fire Department while working on Truck 5 at Station 5 in Spenard. A brief 2023 update looks something along these lines: I’m currently working as an emergency manager with the State of Alaska supporting small communities around the state in their emergency incident mitigation efforts. I recently celebrated my one year wedding anniversary with my bride, Carly, and continue to cherish adventures with her. My children, Eli Benjamin, age 11, and Nora Joan, age 8, are growing up far too quickly. They really enjoy extracurricular activities and playing outside. All in all, I’m very grateful for how far I’ve come in so little time after my training incident. The community, my medical team, my family, and my faith continue to bring me farther forward in my injury recovery journey every year. 2

My husband's in the ccu now, and his brain was damaged from lack of oxygen, causing from sudden cardiac arrest. Doctors said there's nothing they can do to help beside waiting for his own recovery. It just happened 3 days ago. I can't give up hope this soon but at the same time feeling helpless.

My grandson too suffered a TBI. On February 18th of 2016. I had spoken to him in 2015 about God. He was raised in a Christian home, but I wasn’t for sure where his heart was. He said to me “ grandma I don’t know if I believe in God”. I told him there is a God and a heaven and hell. He lives in Minnesota, I live in Texas, but go home in the summer to visit my family. I work in a school and have the summer off. Well I prayed to God to please don’t let my grandson die without knowing God. In February 18th 2016 I got the call. My grandson had been hit head on by a garbage truck. His skull was crushed into his brain on the left side. His lung was collapsed, his pelvis crushed and many other injuries. Prayers went out all over the world. I have many God fearing friends on Facebook and many churches started prayer chains. When I speak of a miracle, God did indeed gave me and my grandson a miracle. I went home June 1,2016 and my grandson came home. 3 months is truly a miracle. He did end up having to go back into a rehab because he was refusing to take his medication. When I got home he was wearing a chain with a cross. I asked him if he remembered me talking to him about God. He said “ yes, I died”. He doesn’t remember a NDE but I believe God spoke to him while he was in a coma. He had to learn to walk, talk, eat and as you know many hours of rehabilitation. The pictures show where you can see a transformation. The look of not really being aware to a change where you can see that he was back and knew people and from there on many hard times to get back walking and talking. His accident was a blessing in disguise. He had been a very unhappy young man using drugs, possibly undiagnosed maybe of bi polar to now a happy young man who knows and loves God. I give God all the glory, honor, and praise. God truly is still working miracles today! God bless and thank you for sharing your son’s story.
