Hopefully, this innings marks Stokes finding the balance between the aggressive approach he wants to see his team play and the sense required to build an innings. he played some aggressive strokes here but he got himself in first and picked his moments. There were more balls played along the ground and fewer cases of running down the wicket and slogging the fast bowlers. His dismissal was reminiscent of a number of innings recently but they were much earlier and while his team were still in a less string position.

Ben is quite capable of getting his test batting average up to 40 and beyond. That he chooses to bat the way he does sometimes (throwing his bat and caution to the wind) is exciting but not necessarily in the best interests of England. An example being at Trent Bridge in June 1st innings. Had Ben played a similar innings to the one at Old Trafford, England's 2nd innings run chase would have been a lot easier.

All-rounders tend to be superior in either discipline, but versatile. Beefy & Kallis were respectively a bowler and a batsman first & foremost, for example. While Stokes will & has correctly been compared to Beefy, he does remind more of young and fit Steve Waugh. You could not tell what either were better at. You could guess their personal preference, but their skill was equal. The strokeplay was great in Stokes' innings, he was delightfully technical until his dismissal. The acknowledgment by Rabada reflected a superb effort. Stokes' seamers were almost retro in how they reminded of Waugh, Hughes, Fraser, McGrath et al,. Stokes will need to be as good at the Oval now Bairstow has been ruled out. Well done & Best wishes for the final game.
